Count me down as someone else who respected what Sloan did. I've always hated the guy more than Stockton and Malone because as the coach of those two dirty ****ers, I believe he was and is largely responsible for how the game is played defensively now. However, I don't think there are that many coaches who would've done that to their player had they not been given the technical. After that play, it had be reflecting on the fact that Sloan has toughed it out in Utah when other coaches (um, Phil, I'm looking in your direction) would've bolted and waited for more superstars to come calling. Good for you, Jerry.
Please stop giving so much love to Jerry Sloan all. He had/has his players practice flopping and cheap shots. I don't care how many good things he does like last night, his is the ringleader of the dirty flopping, cheap-shotting jazzholes.
As glad as I am that Snyder was dealt with by his own coach and didn't have to get a fine handed down by the league or something, I can't bring myself to say that I respect Jerry Sloan. There is a reason his teams play dirty, and I think it is because he teaches the dirty play...or at least encourages it. It's the way he operated when he was a player, and it's how he operates now as a coach. I will give him credit for his handling of Snyder, though. That was good to see.
God, that is such a classy move by Jerry Sloan. Old school values. That does it. I want to have Jerry Sloan's baby.
Sloan deserves credit for doing the right thing but that doesn't condone all the antics and cheating he has been doing for years. He is just as much responsible for the reputation the Jazz have as Malone and Stockton do. He teaches fundamental basketball but will do anything illegal to win as well.
Let's not start sucking Jerry Sloan's d**k just yet. Hornacek, Stockton, Malone, Osterfag, and countless others have been coached into a style of place that encourages flops, flying elbows and knees, whining to officials, and who knows how many secret backdoor handjobs to Jake O'Donnell. The man is pure evil, tried and true. What did you expect him to do or say in that situation? He's not going to publicly commend Snyder for his actions, nor will he chide the man anymore than he has to to make his reaction appear sincere.
Wait - how can you make a racist comment against a white guy? Think about it....what could he call him? Redneck? White Trash? Hick? Must have been against Yao...with no one wanting to publicize it as a distraction and media circus.
you may be right... ironcially, I think I am friends with one of the only black females in Utah - she moved there from Texas about 3 years ago - btw ... who are the "j*zz"
His comment afterwards was something to the effect of that's how fights get started. C'mon guys, he's still a Jazzhole.
Sloan to sit Snyder Having seen the tape of Kirk Snyder's taunting of the Rockets' bench on Monday, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said he would not play Snyder today against Denver, adding that he would not have played Snyder again on Monday had he seen the episode. Snyder said he was actually looking into the crowd and denied a charge by Rockets guard Bob Sura that he made a racist comment to Jon Barry during a previous game between the Rockets and Jazz. Sloan said the tape was clear that Snyder was not looking into the crowd Monday. "I'm not going to play him the next game," Sloan told the Salt Lake City Tribune. "I watched it on film. I thought it was ridiculous what he did. It wasn't a casual thing like 'I was looking up in the stands.' He went right over to the bench. He wasn't looking up into the stands. You have to be held accountable for some of those things. To me, it really could have been a serious situation. "Kirk talks a lot. He should just save his talking for when the game is over. That's what we're hoping to get our guys to do." http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3108896 ---------------------- I have a lot of respect for Sloan.
I really don't think so. The whole "Jazz is a dirty team" thing is overrated. Malone is dirty. Stockton is dirty. But I don't see anyone else is. In the past couple years after Stockton and Malone are gone, you don't see the "dirty plays" anymore. It's now more of an urban legend. Now days, you don't find a Bruce Bowen or Danny Fortson on the Jazz team. Raja Bell is kinda close, but he's mellowed out this season. Whining to the refs? Comon! Tell me what team doesn't do that? Just tell me one team who doesn't whine to the refs. Please, please, please, would you? Please! Please! Flopping? In the league right now, when you talk about flopping, does any Jazz player come to mind? Last time I checked, Derek Fisher and Vlade Divac don't play for the Jazz. The Jazz sucks. But using urban legends as a way to support one's argument isn't "valid". There is no insincerity in Sloan when he benched Snyder and got into his face. Now he's even suspending the guy for what he did. Do you really think it's a grandstanding by Sloan to gain respect from the Rockets fans? Do you think he actually care what we think? He never even bothered to lobby for the Coach of Year award, although he's one of the most deserving ones in the history of the NBA. If he doesn't care for getting the Coach of the Year, you believe he cares about how Rockets fans perceive him? Sloan's evil? OK, so is Santa, right?
Wow! You really analyzed that one. I didn't agree with everything El Toro said. I thought he made a few good arguments. I give credit to Sloan and respect for what he just did. However, the past is hard to forget. Sloan is also probably mellowing out with age and near the end of his career. El Toro has some points though about the past. Jazz were a dirty team. Sloan knew about it and didn't try to stop it and encouraged it by not doing anything about it. Who knows what else? You are right about the other stuff IMO.
Also tipping my hat to Sloan. It's much easier to like him now that Malone is gone. Don't forget he's still grieving the loss of his wife to cancer. That man is cut from serious rock. It's pretty sad that he's routinely left out of great coaches in the game talk. Look at Larry Brown's prima donna act and history of commitment to his team versus Sloan. Evan
Doh! Thanks for the heads up. You know, as a Rockets fans I definitely hate all the cheapy little things the Jazz always get away with. Moving picks. Flops. Favorable calls (like when Malone kicks out his leg while taking a jumpshot, racks the defender and somehow gets a blocking foul called). But the thing is, they've historically gotten away with it. Credit Sloan. Hate him all you want. I hate that SOB. But you gotta give him props for that. And for other things he does, but I'm not about to turn colors and give REAL praise to anyone associated with the Jassholes. I imagine Snyder might have just earned himself a corner in the largest doghouse in the game.
