Agreed, it's a dumb list. I've been to every one of those cities within the last 5 years except for Des Moines.

    - Raleigh is alright, but Chapel Hill is the nice part of "The Triangle"

    - Omaha is frigid in the winter and isolated in spite of Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway.

    - Boise: not a damn thing to do here. I guess you're close to the Sawtooth Mountains, which are gorgeous, but not a fun place for young folks

    - Colorado Springs: home of the Air Force, a pretty up and coming spot, kind of like an Austin-lite, but with mountains nearby

    - Austin: I'd put it #1 on this list. Sluts, Tex-Mex, BBQ, nightlife, Lake Travis, Barton Springs, etc.

    - Fayetteville: Went there for the Texas-Arkansas game back in '04. It's actually a pretty cool little college town, but I don't see how you could categorize it with the other large cities on the list. There's no economy outside of the University of Arkansas. Wal-Mart is about 60 miles north in Bentonville.

    - Sacramento: of all the kickass places in Cali, why the hell is Sacto on the list? Aside from its proximity to Lake Tahoe, it absolutely blows. Nothing to do there.

    - Des Moines: come on now, frigid ass place on the Great Plains...

    - Provo: Crappy, overly conservative town. Do they allow dancing there yet?

I've never seen a group with more civic pride. It's too bad nobody else feels the same way.

You're just a big cheap place to live in. That's it.

I always wonder why people say there is nothing to do in Houston.

I take that as people saying "there aren't enough places to drink." We have world class museums, world class fine arts facilities, a great new park downtown, three state of the art sports arenas, great entertainment centers being built, underrated parks, etc.

What do you guys define as "something to do" that you don't find in Houston?

As far as those of you complaining about strip malls and lack of zoning, you do realize that a lack of zoning helps to keep our COL so low right?

I know tons of people who trash talked Houston while they lived here and once they moved away realized that the grass really isn't that much greener on the other side. It's all a case of playing up the potential of other cities while playing down the great things in Houston.

Houston to me, is the quintessetial urban sprawl. Austin is artsy, trendy, cool, liberal and very well educated. Austin also doesn't consider Round Rock or any other suburb as soemthing to be proud of.

I think Austin is a hair more expensive, but that comes with the territory.

I think the show sucks, but I think there's a reason why alot of movies are shot here and the Real World was clamoring to come here and to the best of my knowledge hasn't given any Texas city a look yet.

I think Austin is the most unique city in Texas and I think alot of people from other Texas cities are jealous of it.

I know this is the wrong board to post this because 90% of you guys either live in or were born in Houston.

I'll give you weather, but have you actually been to Austin? It's like Colorado Springs but diverse.

Having lived there I can safely say that your post exemplifies everything that is wrong with Austin: the people and the arrogance they exhibit regarding their mediocre city.

great live music any night of the week
Barton Springs: 68 degrees year round!
    Zilker Park
    Town Lake scenic jogging trail
centralized bar/nightlife district (6th St. and Warehouse District)
Lake Travis and the sluts at Devil's Cove
    excellent mountain biking trails

One plus about Houston is that it does have some pretty good, affordable golf courses.

I wouldn't say that... particularly when there are a huge number of mega-winger churches and Dobson's group has their own zip code within the city.

Austin has plenty of live music but not much of it is great. It does have more than Houston, though. The centralized bar/nightlife just doesn't appeal to me. Then again I don't feel the need to get drunk every night to have fun.

Everything else has similar areas in Houston. Memorial Park is an excellent jogging trail. There are numerous parks in Houston, as well.

I'm not big on picking up sluts either so I'll have to take your word for it. :)

This thread reads like a bunch of jealous, insecure people. All these broad, sweeping, dismissive generalizations of each other (Houston is just cheap, Dallas is pompous, Austin is arrogant) is incredible. Or maybe I'm wrong...all these cities are as 1-dimensional as you all claim, in which I'll never step foot in the state of Texas again.

BTW, I love how some people get defensive about a supposed lack of nightlife by saying 'Who cares about tons of bars where people get drunk. I don't need to go out and get wasted to have a good time.' Believe it or not, going out at night doesn't always involve keg stands. Ever heard about having a nice dinner, and going to a bar/lounge or 2 to have some drinks w/ friends?
