i dont really like the light rail system. i think houston would have been better off building a rapid bus transit system like denver or las vegas. it would have been cheaper and easier to build.

but anyways, now they have to hurry up and expand the rail system.

id also like to see the city build more bike trails. i know not many people bike right now but wait until gas gets to $4.00. also, i think a lot more people would bike if there were dedicated trails like hersey park that went from the suburbs all the way into the city.

I would say the weight of the article and the statistics therein are a bit more compelling than antecdotal evidence presented in a, "why i don't like houston" form.

Bookmarked for the next time a survey comes out ranking Houston as the fattest, most polluted, undesirable place to live.

Just kidding. In a sidenote - Houston appears to do well here because of the high salaries and low cost of living, making it a bit of an outlier as the two statistics tend to track each other. In economic terms, in many situations, Cost of living can be a measure of desirable locations in and of itself. High COL cities include aesthetically pleasing places like San Diego and San Francisco and world class cultural or financial centers like NYC or LA.

A city with a low COL and high median salary can be interpreted as an indicator that's an incredibly undesirable place to live which means that people must be paid a premium to live there

i would hardly call the redline an "effective" means of mass transist... get the other lines going and then we'll talk.

I think that's the way it use to be but IMHO, not anymore...granted, I don't live there, but my brother lives downtown and there is always tons happening...He uses the train to get around...Plus midtown is right near there as well and stuff is always happening, at least it was this past Saturday night...

If I moved back to Houston, I'd want to live in midtown area...although, it was sooo f'n humid saturday night...

On the BBS predictability scale, I knew this thread would rank 10 out of 10.

    1. Post story about Houston being a good place to live based on a story in a national publication.
    2. Respondents post why Houston is a *****hole.
    3. Others respond that Houston is great.
    4. Someone brings up light rail.
    5. Someone else brings up strip malls.
    6. People cite their own likes/dislikes as evidence the story is valid/invalid.
    7. I post how predictable the BBS has become with posts like these.

    :)

For the record, I've never seen a city before where so many of its citizens literally hated it and yet refused to do anything about it. It's pretty amazing and by "amazing" I mean pathetic.

That's a symptom of a situation in which salaries are high and cost of living is low - many residents may dislike it but economically it's difficult fro them to move elsewhere given that costs would rise and salary would decrease, which is why they are paid the premium to stay.

what else can be said that hasn't been stated before ad naseum? you apparently love driving, long commutes, strip centers, and anything else that is convenient, yet you lambast those who state that it's those "conveniences" that are holding this city back from becoming a world class city. it's fantastic that you dont give a damn what houston's reputation is, or how much we pollute, or how much land we (very poorly) develop, or how much we completely rely on our cars, because you're happy just the way things are.

get back to us in 5 years when gas is pushing $6 or $7 dollars, and you're still driving 30-45 mins. each way until you decide to move close in to town. then you'll see why so many of us actually WANT a solid mass transist system, and pedestrian friendly developments that DONT REQUIRE A CAR, etc.

    that'll be fun.

I left Houston nearly 9 years ago to move to Austin. I love Austin. If my family were ever to leave Austin by choice, the only place in Texas I would live is Houston.

    preach my brotha preach...
Im from Brasil but I have lived most of my life in Houston  Moved to houston when I was 6 and I cant wait to get the HELL OUT. Dont get me wrong, I love houston but I would much rather live in a place that is enjoyable. I studied for 6 months in Barcelona and that a live style. Wake up and walk or take the metro to work. Go home for lunch and take a siesta after lunch. Go back to work until mid evening. Then go out every night for tappas and drinks. The beaches on the weekends or any day if you can....Thats a lifestyle...sorry about the rant, I miss barca :(

Houston is a great city with tons to do on any given day of the week, but you really need to live inside the loop to experience it to the fullest. I can't wait to get out of the suburbs

Yep, we love our driving until it costs us $75 to fill up a sedan. One of the secondary reasons I'm looking at teaching in Katy is that it'll save me close to $500 now in gas/tolls a month. And that's just at the current gas prices.

Try living in India or China or anywhere in the world that are over populated. If you have a problem with people cramping your space, go live on a deserted farm...
