They must have some union then. Also, I don't consider the rest of the stuff mentioned as "a lot more work". They obviously have to do something else to get their year's worth salary for what is essentially a 6-7 month job for most.
Well, they were screwed, but they deserved to be screwed for not playing any D. There is no gurantee they can win the game even it went into OT.
If the goaltending was called, the Kings would have had a 3 point lead with less than 24 seconds left, meaning they could have fouled the Mavs, giving them at most 2 points and then sat on the ball, at worst needing to hit a few FTs to win the game.
I think the NBA should allow teams to challenge calls just like in NFL. If the team is wrong, they will waste a timeout, if the refs are wrong, they will have to reverse the call. This works perfectly in NFL, I don't know why the NBA won't adopt it. I do think NBA refs have too much controls over the game.
refs get too much protection. a lot of them are unfair in their treatment of players and when a player questions a call, refs sometimes don't listen or even gives technicals, fines ..whatever. i think important game calls need to be replayed on the video especially in a scenario such as this. I don't understand why they bring in replay for last second shots, but they don't for this particular instance. refs should also be fined or suspended for games when they make crucial noncalls or calls. they should be no different.
A little testy, dude? Jeez, are you going to try to stop all sports fans from over generalizing and making exagerations?
nba referees are terrible. i don't care about "they try their best, the game is fast paced" give those f@#kers another set of eyes then. sorry, i'm always pissed at what they do to yao. there is too much coddling of star players and entirely too many judgement calls. blow it when you see it not if you think you saw it or if it was kobe or lebron and some guy breathed too close to him. cuban is totally right, even though he better be thanking them tonight.
Very testy, I submit, but I'm at least expecting some NBA discourse that that challenges things. This site, and these posters, can be brilliant at times. Most times. Jaw-dropping stuff. Sometimes I don't like being talked-down towards. Sue me.
But he played piss poor defense (poor PnR rotation) in that play sequence and was bailed out by Dampier's goal tend. He just allowed Mobley a free path and pass to the basket without even attempting a flash even knowing fully well that Mobley would drive left. Ahh...... I did not really who won or lost - I just wanted to enjoy the game and I did. Stop crying Sactown and move on
I watched that play when it happened in real time and it was so obvious that it was a goal tend. Kings and Mobley got jobbed big time. I can't help but think that Mobley's reputation as a player that whines to the refs all the time hurt him big time last night. Still no excuse for the refs to miss a clear-cut goaltending call.
The refs ARE allowed to huddle up, but I'm not sure if they all have the ability to ask for it, or only the head ref (who usually has the biggest ego/name recognition). That's too bad - if the Kings were fined for this second one, though, I think it was because they showed the replay SEVEN times on their scoreboard during the ensuing timeout. I think that should be allowable, but a precedent was set a while ago with Mark Cuban - the NBA front office doesn't like that type of replay.
You'd think they'd be more concerned about their high-paid refs all missing one of the easiest calls they'd had all night, in crunch-time, that precipitated that replay.
I dont get it how lenient the NBA is on its refs. After all that controversy not even a few days ago. They let it happen again. Just beyond stupid. They are tryin to pay more attention to these stupid ticky tack fouls than the most obvious violations.
NBA refs for the most part do an excellent job. the worst thing they do is favor stars. however, since i have no doubt that's how stern wants it, they are just doing their job. since star treatment is everywhere, it would be hard for me to believe that's not how the nba wants it as they would correct it. look how quickly they've changed the no contact on the perimeter calls. obviously, they miss some really bad things every once in a while (and how you miss something happening on the ball, where at least one official should always be looking, i don't know) but so do all umpires/refs. hell, the home plate ump probably misses an obvious ball/strike, 5 to 10 times a game. you just except that it's hard to do. football refs miss crap all the time and there are 7 of them i think. basketball can't do replays or huddles for the most part because action has to be stopped for that. in baseball the play stops at some point most of the time or they only huddle on fair/foul homers. if they miss other calls, they miss them. football officials usually have 40 seconds between every play or they get their own time to do replay. it would be hard to review a goaltending call like this because action is already going the other way and you could wrongly stop a fast break. however, i don't get kelly's comments. the officials blow the hell out of a call, someone calls them on how easy it was, and kelly does launches into some inane argument with the guy as if no one's ever made such comments before. then degrades most of the posters on this site, even indicating he was talked-down towards (randy johnson syndrome i guess) when i don't think anyone addressed him in the first place.
True - but that's why they fine them privately. I don't think they release the fine/suspension/reprimand info to the public, right? I think Mark Cuban tried to get that info released a few years ago and it didn't happen. I'm in no way condoning the way the NBA handles its refs or the way these refs call the game. I'm just telling you what I believe I've read as fact. F4P - superstar calls suck. I sort of get the feeling, though, that this year's enforcement is a step in the right direction. The scoring has gone up, EXACTLY as desired, and I think you've seen a wider variety of play in the league. And look, people/fans/paying public is happy... so maybe the shift from the individual to the team is happening in the NBA.
Easy, killer. I am just speculating, no need for taking it personal like. You can't deny that Mobley is not a fav of the refs and I suspect that there are many refs who hold grudges. Remember Jake O'Donnell and Drexler, Smeg?
