The average age of the houston rockets is: 29.160, and we have 6 players over 30 (without barry) And I think this trade was good, I like it
At the very least, it's a deal that cannot hurt us. Barry is a very good outside shooter. Lue brought nothing to this team. It's not that he isn't a good player. It's just that he did nothing for this team. If Barry fails, he's gone next season. If he does what he's paid to do (hit 3's), then it's a great deal and makes many other things work that weren't working before.
I like this move. I really couldn't stand Tyra, but it's not like this is a huge deal. I don't expect to much of a difference from this...
Link:http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2962310 Barry returns to Rockets Ex-ball boy acquired in trade for Lue By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Jon Barry did not plan on becoming a Rocket when he first wore the gear, then in red and mustard yellow. But he has thought about it in the 24 years since, came close a few times and finally made it back Thursday. He might have become the first Rockets ball boy to become a Rockets player before Thursday's trade that sent point guard Tyronn Lue to Atlanta and freed Barry from the Hawks' bench. But his skills never could have been as tight a fit with the Rockets' needs as they are now. "I still have a passion to play," Barry said. "I haven't played the last couple of weeks. I'm excited to play with great players and other good players. I think they should be one of the better teams out there. I'm going to try to provide a spark. "I know I have a great knowledge of the game. I play hard. I play to win. I'm going to make the extra pass, take the charge, play the right way. I'm going to try to help them turn it around to the right direction." Barry, 35, also will make the NBA's oldest team older. Though his career shooting percentages (43.4 percent overall and 38.7 percent on 3-pointers) are not that different from Lue's, he has been known as a top shooter off the bench. But with four point guards and no backup shooting guard, the deal allowed the Rockets to balance their roster, providing both players pass their physicals, and for Barry to offer qualities the Rockets have lacked. "We like his passion, his shooting and his passing," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. The Rockets have had problems with teams almost ignoring their point guards to send defensive help elsewhere. Barry, who worked for the Rockets when his father, Hall of Famer Rick Barry, played for them, has played point guard on occasion in his career. But at least initially, the Rockets plan to use Barry as a shooting guard, his primary position in his 13-year career with seven teams. "He's more of a two," Van Gundy said. "But we didn't have a two other than Reece (Gaines) on our roster. I thought Boki (Nachbar), Jim (Jackson) and Tracy (McGrady) are all more comfortable defending threes, not that Jon defends twos great, but it is his natural position. So we'll see how it works." But the Rockets had enough of a need that Van Gundy instructed Barry to be ready to play Sunday against the Clippers. "I told him I haven't played in three weeks," Barry said. "He said to do what I had to to get ready. I'm excited. I made a decision to sign (a one-year, $1.8 million deal) with Atlanta because I wanted to stay home with my family. But the basketball wasn't anything to write home about. I am excited about this."
I'm thinking Dre will get much more minutes(15+) after this trade, after he gets off the IL of course. If he doesn't, other teams are going to kill us with their press until we die from it. Scenario: Pistons puts on hard press, with Charlie Ward at the point, anyone at 2. result: too ugly to imagine. Pistons puts on hard press, with Sura at the point, anyone at 2. result: can be scary at times. Pistons puts on hard press, with Dre at the point, anyone other than Ward at 2. result: THE PRESS HAS BEEN BROKEN. As soon as teams starts pressing, and they will, we have no choice but to play Dre. Unless of course there is a Gaines-Nash trade up CD's sleeve, then I don't think anyone would mind not ever seeing Dre again.
That's a hilarious quote. But, the interesting thing is regarding TMac. Most everyone has considered him the two, but JVG looks at him as a 3- meaning, he'd probably rather add a talented SG than SF. IMO, that's a good thing, since SGs are usually easier to find than SFs.
seriously. . . why wait til the man shows up in houston before cutting him down? Van ReRun rocket River
They must be doing us a favor. That is the way I see it. It would be nice if they were nice enough to give us their flower foward, Antoine Walker. They way Motay and Juwan are now going, I would not mind taking on Walker.
Are the Rockets trying to corner the market on shooting guards who can handle the ball but can't play the point guard spot? There's Gaines, Sura, and now Barry who all fit that mold. I don't know enough about Barrett to classify him in that group, but from what I've heard around here, he could well fit in there too. It's an upgrade from a talent standpoint because Lue's a 2nd/3rd string point guard while Barry is something like an 8th man, but that doesn't say much nor does it get at the bigger problem -- getting a REAL point guard to set up McGrady and Yao. Trust me, after seeing him for 4 years in Orlando, you want TMac to have a real PG to play alongside and not have him bring the ball up the court. McGrady will make some nice plays under those circumstances, but he'll also make some boneheaded plays. Far too often, he will pop up for a three, or let the shot clock wind down too far, or play one-on-one iso with three defenders collapsing on him. In fact, it's a lot of the same criticisms people have of Steve Francis, except McGrady's the "new guy" and thus far gets a free ride. Find him a real PG and you won't see that. But, on the trade, not a bad move to accumulate some talent...but again, it's not saying much.
That is interesting. Only way this trade has any kind of impact is if JVG adjusts the rotation to get Barry more time at SG. Backing up T-Mac with the rotation they have now will only get Barry into the game for less than 10 minutes a game. I was never impressed with Barry's ball handling abilities so I don't see him playing much PG, which leaves T-Mac getting more playing time at SF. The Rox are 12-14, not great but good enough to have a chance of salvaging this season. JVG needs to start coaching his butt off, make it more uptempo on the offensive side, stabilize this lineup, I don't ever remember a coach using the IL like a temporary employment agency like he has lately. I hope Barry can walk the talk and can knock down the jumper.
Matt Jackson on 610 said this morning that getting Barry will setup a trade that allows us to dangle JJ w/ Mo T and get us a real PF. Since Barry can be serviceable at the 2 spot and fill in for JJ. Matt said that Nene w/Denver is a strong possibilty since Vershond Lenard is out for the season and JJ would be a perfect fit for them right now. Please take Mo away and bring in Nene!
so, we got rid of our worst player in lue and, in exchange, got barry from crapy hawks and everyone is excited. is barry going to be an upgrade from lue? i sure hope so. i was thinking if we got someone with lue + something, that would be more convicing. well i hope this will work out.
While I agree with most of what you are saying here, I think the difference between SF and Tmac is that T is 6'9" and can elevate over most defenders to get his shot off. This was evident in his incredible San Antonio finish.
David Aldridge on TNT last night said there have been talks between the Bucks & Nuggets for a straight Redd/Nene swap. If this is the case, I don't think we have any chance of landing Nene unless something falls through. If that is on the table, Denver would be idiots not to take it.
JJ is a nice player but he is getting older. Denver is highly unlikely IMO to take him for Nene. Barry can be a backup 2 but if JJ goes T-Mac would have to be the starting 3 with Boki as his backup. We also wouldn't have anyone else who could start at the 2 either.
Let's not get overly excited here. It's a good trade, but will hardly shift the balance of power. We get a little immediate cap space, but both Lue and Barry are free agents at the end of the season. I do like the fact that Barry is longer and fundamentally sound. I would love it if we could somehow pry Stoudamire from Portland or Marshall from Toronto.
This trade is much adu about nothing unless it sets up another trade. If the other trade is for Nene' then it is still a pointless trade. Nene' sucks. If the Bucks trade Redd for Nene' straight up then they are just plain idiots.
