I'm pretty sure the Red Apple sign in the airport was the only one. I mean, was that scream really that similar to the Pulp Fiction one? This whole movie is about Kung Fu and Samurai stuff, so of course there was gonna be a Katana or 100. If he had put in the same sword from that Butch used, that would be something. I don't get the "Death List 5" thing. Are you talking about Fox Force 5? I think he got that from an american martial arts action movie called Force: 5.
Excellent fight scenes? Sorry I couldn't see anything because of the stupid blood spurting everywhere. Not to mention the terrible fight choreography. Plucky ninjas!!! Reminds me of a Farscape quote. "You can't take them all at once." "How dumb do you think I am? I'm taking them one by one, the Die Hard way." The only possible improvement would have been somebody decapitating QT and having his blood spray everywhere in an incredibly distracting and unrealistic manner. Oh wait, that's "art" right? My bad.
The Red Apple sign and the "we'd be all square" line are the only real parallels. I found them rather amusing though, since they're more inside jokes than paying homage to his greatness.
Well, it's obvious why you hate this movie. You are the only one here who thinks this is supposed to be art. That or you are just grabbing at straws in finding ways to dis the movie. No, spraying blood isn't art, it's just the way they did it in the old samurai movies. It's also kind of funny.
You completely misunderstood my post. I don't think it's supposed to be art. I think QT does. And I think all of his fanboys do. That's why they dismiss everything questionable as part of his genius. He can do no wrong.
"Kill Bill: Volume 1" shows Quentin Tarantino so effortlessly and brilliantly in command of his technique that he reminds me of a virtuoso violinist racing through "Flight of the Bumble Bee" -- or maybe an accordion prodigy setting a speed record for "Lady of Spain." I mean that as a sincere compliment. The movie is not about anything at all except the skill and humor of its making. It's kind of brilliant." - Ebert Slurp, slurp... Actually reading his review, I think he may be making fun of QT and the movie... "The Bride defeats the 88 superb fighters (plus various bodyguards and specialists) despite her weakened state and recently paralyzed legs because she is a better fighter than all of the others put together. Is that because of the level of her skill, the power of her focus, or the depth of her need for vengeance? Skill, focus and need have nothing to do with it: She wins because she kills everybody without getting killed herself. You can sense Tarantino grinning a little as each fresh victim, filled with foolish bravado, steps forward to be slaughtered. Someone has to win in a fight to the finish, and as far as the martial arts genre is concerned, it might as well be the heroine." Hilarious, though it may have been unintentional.
So Robert Ebert, who gave Reservoir Dogs thumbs down, is a QT fanboy? Also, you just gave me a hugely positive review from a critic who has watched movies for longer than you have been alive, the only critic to have his own tv show, a real professional. You are hurting your own point there Nomar. You don't have to like this movie Nomar, but I'm bugging you because you basically said that those of us who did like it are stupid or irrational. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/KillBillVol1-1126182/ Go Red Sox btw.
Yeah I know I'm offensive, but I really do think that people who thought that Kill Bill is a good movie are irrational. And I was showing you that people think that everything he does is a high form of art. If he passed his work off as just fun stuff, I wouldn't have nearly the same problem with it. It's just that people follow him with a cult-like fanaticism, and the work is simply not that good.
I'm not a big fan of QT but I do like his styling. It's quirky like a SAAB. It's just fresh to see something different on screen. He's very over the top but that's what I like about him and I expect to see that out of his movies. That's why I enjoy it. I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to see the 2nd part.
I was the ONLY one in the whole theater who laughed at that! I thought for sure someone else must've got it!
I agree with ya Nomar. Tarantino is an overated rip-off artist. People think he is some brilliant, creative director. His genius Pulp Fiction was just a re-make of Repo Man. (But the soundtrack is sooo cool ). I can't wait for this fad to end.
Wait, wait wait....a lot of people liked this movie. It got a lot of good reviews, and is making some good money. Most people just think its fun, yet you keep getting hung up on 'art'. Regardless...it's getting mostly good word of mouth. Which means... There's a whole bunch of people who are 'irrational'. You, Nomar, are one of the few 'rational' people in the ENTIRE MOVIE VIEWING WORLD who has been able to stay above the 'duping' the rest of us have fallen for. And you're telling me Tarantino has the EGO problem!?! I pray to God you never make a movie.
Oh, I don't think it was really "going on" between 1997, after the relative failure of the severely underrated Jackie Brown, and 2003, with the build-up and release of Kill Bill. Plus, I don't think the extreme worship of Reservoir Dogs began until after Pulp Fiction hit.
OK, he was implying that the fad has been going on since 1993, when Pulp Fiction was released. I'll go back to my nine year statement, even though I remember hearing a lot about Reservoir Dogs before Pulp Fiction came out.
I do, too. I recall renting it and watching it in mid-1992. But I don't think the mania that's really annoying to many people really hit until Pulp Fiction in '94.
