Bond movies suck. a) Return of the Jedi b) Attack of the Clones Haven't seen either of them and have no real desire to as both A New Hope and The Phantom Menace put me to sleep. a) The Terminator b) Total Recall Total Recall. The Terminator franchise is pretty overrated, imho, and TR at least has a three-breasted woman. a) Pulp Fiction b) Reservoir Dogs Pulp Fiction all the way. a) Steel Magnolias b) Fried Green Tomatoes Only seen A (again)... a) Shrek b) Monsters, Inc. How you can make one of the bloodiest engagements ever boring would have baffled me before I saw this movie. a) Armageddon - I don't like Afleck in anything not directed by Kevin Smith b) Deep Impact * a) Minority Report - It was okay, but BR was way, way better. b) Blade Runner * a) Goldfinger * b) GoldenEye - The old Bond movies were so much better than the new ones. I think the character is just tired now. a) Return of the Jedi - This was the worst SW movie. I don't care how much you hate Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd, there were f-ing teddy bears killing stormtroopers by the hundreds. b) Attack of the Clones * a) The Terminator * b) Total Recall - This one is good, but The Terminator was Arnold's best movie. a) Pulp Fiction - Another matchup of good movies. I think the tipping scene in Dogs, and a couple of other parts are a little bit better than anything from PF though. I also found Butch's wife very annoying. b) Reservoir Dogs * a) Steel Magnolias b) Fried Green Tomatoes This is like asking it i would rather have my left or right nut removed. They are both losers, AFAIAC. a) Shrek * b) Monsters, Inc. - I didn't like Monsters Inc. A little too cute for my tastes. Shrek is better for older audiences. a) Caddyshack b) Happy Gilmore I actually like both of these about equally, and I really hate golf.
All right. Let me explain the rationale for each question. a) Saving Private Ryan b) The Thin Red Line Two very different (and very good) movies about WWII. I was testing mainstream vs. indie here. For the record, I liked SPR better. a) Armageddon b) Deep Impact Two movies with a similar plot. One, however, is an action flick, and the other deals with characters in crisis. Deep Impact IS the better movie, but Armageddon is more fun and entertaining. Therefore, personally, I liked Armageddon better. However, with Armageddon, I not only had to suspend any sense of reality, I had to take out my brain, place it in a safety deposit box, and ship it to Abu Dhabi prior to watching the film. It's THAT dumb... I mean, c'mon, is it really daylight EVERYWHERE in the world at the same time (re: ending)?? a) Minority Report b) Blade Runner These two shouldn't go together. I mean, puh-leaze, Blade Runner runs circles around Minority Report. However, I was testing RECENT movie vs. OLD movie knowledge here (and put two SOMEWHAT similar movies together for that purpose). Some people ONLY like recent movies and tend to forget about the "classics." Probably should have put Gladiator and Ben-Hur together instead... a) Goldfinger b) GoldenEye New Bond vs. old Bond. Quite simple, really. I prefer the new Bond myself, because I enjoy action. And GoldenEye delivers in spades. For some reason, I just can't get into old 007 flicks. Is it the plot? The editing? I'm not sure. Maybe like the Blade Runner vs. Minority Report matchup, I just like NEWER movies... a) Return of the Jedi b) Attack of the Clones I took the WORST original series film and put it against the BEST of the new trilogy (so far). I was testing old school nostalgia here and whether you bow to it. Sadly, though, this test is inaccurate, because Lucas can't seem to duplicate the magic of the first trilogy. Therefore, most people would pick ROTJ, stupid Ewoks notwithstanding... a) The Terminator b) Total Recall Total Recall: the thinking man's Ah-nold movie (or as close as he'll ever come). The Terminator: Kill everything in sight Ah-nold (see: Commando). Testing to see HOW you like your action... smart or dumb. I prefer Total Recall myself. Was it all a dream? Discuss... a) Pulp Fiction b) Reservoir Dogs Two great QT flicks. Mainstream vs. indie again here. Another good matchup would be El Mariachi vs. Desperado (or Once Upon a Time in Mexico). Pulp Fiction is awesome, but there's just something about Reservoir Dogs I like better. a) Steel Magnolias b) Fried Green Tomatoes In the words of Admiral Akbar, "It's a trap!" Neither answer is correct. a) Shrek b) Monsters, Inc. One CGI flick is hip and humorous (Shrek). The other is smart and full of heart (Monsters, Inc.). So, what'll it be? Which one is more to your style? Personally, I'll take Pixar ANY day of the week over the n00b Dreamworks. a) Caddyshack b) Happy Gilmore Similar movies. Different kinds of comedy. Which do you prefer? For the record, I probably should have chosen two different movies for this test, seeing as Caddyshack is arguably the greatest comedy ever.
I'm surprised you classify The Terminator as a dumb action movie. I thought that the first two had a very creative story plot and was not just a shoot'em up action movie like Commando. Total Recall and Terminator I & II were my favorite Ah-nold movies but I would have to vote Termniator as my fav. So do you have a scoring system for your test?
What facts can you use to back this up? Because it's more realistic? I could just turn around and say something silly like Armageddon was the better movie because it was more successful at the box office. Sorry to jump on you, I just really dislike when subjective things are treated in this manner.
Sadly, no. I believe that the data, when taken together, cannot be interpreted into anything meaningful. (Not everyone has seen every movie on the list, anyway.) Hell, I contradict myself in the test, so how useful can it be? I just wanted to see which movie people preferred when pitted against another similar one. Makes for good discussion.
This was a fun movie, and wasn't intended to be a sweeping Oscar epic. It was a cartoonish action movie with stylized gory fight scenes, absurdist Kung-Fu dialogue and hilarious character premises. In short, it's a classic Tarantino movie, for better or worse.
Y'know, you're right. It was a subjective claim on my part. After all, Armageddon and Deep Impact score 42% and 43%, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. But then again, I was stating my opinion rather than making a declaration of fact. Besides, it's MY test, and it's MY rules. (Hey, it's my world; you just live in it...) Here's the basis for my subjective claim. I give you the power and might of quotes from Rotten Tomatoes' review page of Armageddon: "Resolute on violating every law of dramatic unity and physics, Armageddon makes Deep Impact look like a documentary." "breathless and utterly brainless... makes the similarly themed and much more sentimental 'Deep Impact' look like 'Schindler's List' by comparison." "You know you're in trouble when Deep Impact dwarfs your asteroid movie in terms of emotion and scope." "Unlike Armageddon, this film possesses a plot. Granted, it is the insipid plot of a made-for-TV miniseries, but at least it is an actual, tangible plot." [taken from Deep Impact review page] The lone defense of Armageddon: "Don't come out puling and whining that you wanted a movie more about the human side of the story, because they tried that and screwed it up. It was called Deep Impact." Deep Impact is better than Armageddon, in my opinion. However, when taken alone, Deep Impact sucks major donkey balls. It's ALL about the comparison. Check it out: Wing Commander is a kickass movie when placed next to Battlefield Earth. Tomb Raider is high-flying fun when compared to Bulletproof Monk.
Ok...back to Kill Bill. I saw the movie last night and loved it. I went into this afraid that this would be a flop for Quentin, and I left pleasently surprised. The music was kick a$$ too. Can't wait to see the 2nd one.
I haven't seen it yet, but it made about $22 million from Friday-Sunday, which I thought was a little low, considering all they marketing that's been put into it.. I think Tarantino split the movie up because he had a feeling it wouldn't make as much money as he originally thought. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown were both 2 1/2 hours, so an extra 30 minutes won't kill anybody. This way, he makes a little more money.

yeah I read that to QT wanted the movie played all together, which to me would have been great but now we have to wait till next year Feb 2004 for volume 2.
Actually, I just read that QT wanted to, but waited for Weinstein to suggest it. From the EW article a couple of weeks ago: "I didn't ever bring up splitting it up because I had to wait for to be Harvey's idea for it to ever work," remembers Tarantino. "But the minute it happened and Harvey suggested it, all right? It was, like, within an hour I had it all figured out. Literally an hour. It wasn't hard at all."
I have that issue and I completely forgot about that. I hope that they don't split the DVD up though, that would really suck.
