Wow, that sucks for the NBA.

They expected to be a BIG event. They would have earned a lot of money. But with all those injuries, they should

    a) cancel the game
    b) rename it to replacement all star game

This is why I didnt have much issue with the fan voting and McGrady possibly getting voted in. Appealing to the Dallas fan base sure, but what about the WORLD fanbase that voted McGrady in (until Nash came from behind)?

And what about giving Lebron the All Star game MVP over hometown McGrady years ago? All of a sudden hometown considerations get put in? Not that I agree or disagree strongly either way, just the league decisions can be as questionable as fan decisions depending how you look at it

Mavs' Kidd, Knicks' Lee to play
    By Marc Stein
    ESPN.com
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/allstar2010/news/story?id=4906423

DALLAS -- Would-be starters Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson are out of the NBA All-Star Game.

Jason Kidd of the hometown Dallas Mavericks has been chosen to replace Bryant. New York's David Lee is replacing Iverson.

An ankle injury has prevented Bryant from playing in the Los Angeles Lakers' past three games. Iverson has missed Philadelphia's last five games because one of his young children is ill.

Both informed the league on Thursday that they needed to withdraw from Sunday's game, sources said.

NBA commissioner David Stern, who makes all selections on All-Star injury replacements, then chose Kidd to make his 10th All-Star appearance. Kidd -- who ranks fifth in the league in assists (9.3 per game) -- had already left Dallas to begin an All-Star break vacation in the Phoenix area and is expected to fly back to Dallas on Friday.

Although he is still scheduled to travel to Dallas and take part in All-Star Weekend festivities as a spectator, Bryant is the third West guard to pull out of Sunday's game through injury. Stern chose Denver's Chauncey Billups to replace New Orleans' Chris Paul (knee) and Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman to take the spot of Portland's Brandon Roy (hamstring).

Golden State's Monta Ellis, sixth in the league in scoring at 26.2 points per game, might have been a contender to replace Bryant but suffered a knee strain in Tuesday's home loss to Dallas that forced him to miss Wednesday's win over the Clippers.

Iverson has averaged 14.4 points in 25 games since returning to the Sixers in December and earned more than 1 million votes in fan balloting to earn an East starting spot. Iverson will not be required to travel to Dallas because he's missing the game for personal reasons.

Lee is averaging 20 points and 11.4 rebounds and becomes the Knicks' first All-Star since Allan Houston and Latrell Sprewell in 2001. Stern chose Lee over Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut, who is averaging 16.0 points and 10.2 rebounds and has helped lead the Bucks to within a game of a playoff spot in the East.

West coach George Karl and East coach Stan Van Gundy will choose the players who will replace Bryant and Iverson in the respective starting lineups.

It's expected that Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who just missed out on a starting spot in fan voting when San Antonio's Tim Duncan passed him in the final ballot tally, will replace Bryant as a starter with the West.

There might be players with better numbers this season but honestly I'd rather see who was at least an all-star at some point than just the guy with the next best stats.

I don't think there was a guard left that I would consider an all-star.

No no no. As far as Lee, well deserved. This guy has been a monster. And this year he even added a nice midrange game. I really love the guy.

Seriously, why does everyone think Aaron deserves to be an all-star? If anyone from the Rockets, it should be Landry. Face it, we don't really have an all-star.

Kidd will put down clubs for All-Star Game
    By Tim MacMahon
    http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/mave...83/kidd-will-put-down-clubs-for-all-star-game

DALLAS -- Mark Cuban said it took a little lobbying from the Dallas Mavericks to get Jason Kidd an invitation to his 10th All-Star Game.

"But once we laid it out, [NBA officials] were really excited about it," Cuban said.

Kidd, who planned on spending the break at his Arizona home, wasn't so excited initially when Cuban called to ask him to return to Dallas.

"I’m golfing. It’s 70 degrees," Kidd told Cuban. "What do you want me to come back for?"

    Cuban's reply: "No. 10."

Upon hearing that, Kidd immediately agreed to get back to Dallas, although not necessarily as soon as possible.

"Can I leave tomorrow morning?" he asked Cuban. "I need to get another round of golf in."

well, the west lost that year mcgrady lost the mvp. so, thats justified. and it was pretty obvious when kobe is passing to him on every possession that they were trying to get him the mvp. unfortunately that resulted in a loss. kinda classy of kobe tho considering mcgrady had a death in his family? can't remember who died. i think his dad?

also, i remember way back when the asg was in SA. brent barry won the slam dunk contest and MJ got the mvp over shaq (kinda hometown). we all booed MJ and he took the mic and said "I'll give it to shaq if you want."

point being, mcgrady wasnt robbed of the mvp by some preordination of lbj. his team lost despite him having the best numbers of the game. sounds kinda familiar...

kidd got the spot and he can put on a better show for the fans of dallas than AB. this year most of the stars aren't playing anyway. as someone else pointed out, it will only drive AB's price up. if the ASG was in houston and AB got chosen over player B, say derrick rose or something, nobody would be saying that player B deserves the spot.
