I don't think they're going to get offers nearly that good. Look at what valuable players have been traded for when their frustration has reached "must trade him" levels. Shaq, AI, KG (Al Jefferson is nice, but still). The Nets are looking for (1) expiring contracts, (2) young players and (3) draft picks. We have some of (1) in Kirk Snyder and Bonzi. We actually sort of have (3) this year, in that our current draft pick is currently 13th (they're at 11th), though we could slip into 19-21 range if we sneak into the playoffs. We don't really have (2), unless you're willing to give up Brooks/Landry (I'd rather not), or you count Head/Hayes (I'd definitely trade, but will they want them). We aren't that well positioned to get Kidd, but if they got desperate, I could see them doing something like: Alston, James, Francis, Snyder, Bonzi, draft pick for Kidd. They could cut Snyder and Bonzi immediately. Francis, Alston and James may be tradeable in the offseason for some shorter contracts or future picks or TE, etc. Though they may be more likely to hold onto him and try and trade him in the offseason.
The other parts of your statement (salary, age) are undoubtedly valid criticisms, but what type of evidence are you using to say the above? The same argument could have easily been made with Kareem and the showtime Lakers, but that worked ok. Besides which, granting that some systems (Phoenix, GS) tend to be more uptempo than most, how many stellar PGs out there wouldn't be considered up-tempo PG's in the right system? Even Chauncy would be a great up-tempo PG, and both Steve Nash and Baron are more than capable in the half-court game.
Basically, I just don't think it's a good match. IMO, Yao is far too slow to ever be involved in a run-and-gun system. These uptempo teams thrive on the fast break and transition games -- two areas that we are almost non-existent to us. This idea isn't necessarily even a detriment either since recent history has proved that your traditional, halfcourt teams that know how to play defense always trounce these sexier looking uptempo teams. If we traded for Kidd we're basically asking for a transformation. Kidd is the kind of player that will push the ball and increase the game speed of any team, not just us. Is that what we really want? Can Kidd be used in an effective halfcourt offense? Sure, our passing would be better and his court vision should never be undersold but his lack of an effective jumpshot will still kill us no matter how you slice it. Defensively, at 35-years-old and looking slower and less motivated by the day, is he really that much of an upgrade? I still think we would get shredded by the Deron Williams's of the world if we had him or not. The one point I will concede is his $20-21 million of expiring salary coming off the books next summer is a very attractive point to consider. If we were able to dump some of our bad contracts that could make us a very attractive destination in the Summer of 2009 whenever players like Arenas, Artest, Bibby, Marion, Andre Miller, Odom, Maggette, Brand, Rasheed, AI and others all become free agents.
I'm all for making trades in the effort to winning now. However, I'd have to say no to any trade that includes our rookies - Brooks, Landry, and Scola. They are already showing good promise and I don't want to mortgage our future by taking on large (and unmovable) contracts on old (and often injured) players that takes away our future stars and core. Now, if they want Snyder, Novak, Bonzi, or Head I am all for it. I'd even give up Shane, but it would hurt. -Humer
I strongly agree, which is why I would package up our B- talent and trade them for a proven winner. Battier, Bonzi, James, Head, Alston, Francis, Novak, Snyder, and Chuck Hayes should all be expendable. If only the Hawks would unload some of that talent, ala Clippers of the 90's.
All good points. And I'm not advocating a T-Mac for Kidd straight up trade. Clearly, we lose on that. I'm advocating some type of trade that takes advantage of the fact that NJ sucks, A LOT, for the first time in a while, Kidd is apparently acting somewhat childish there recently, there seems to be some serious desire on both sides to part ways, and HISTORICALLY, this means these players are traded relatively cheaply. So, I'm effectively saying, swap Rafer with Jason Kidd and get rid of some of our less talented bench players, give up a draft pick, etc. I would include T-Mac in the trade if RJ or VC was also coming back. So, would we still have problems defending Deron Williams. Sure. But I think Deron Williams would have problems defending Deron Williams. Not that there aren't some better perimeter defenders out there, but with today's NBA rules, you don't see many Gary Payton's or Derek Harper's defensively. The best perimeter defenders tend to be smart, decently athletic SG/SF's (Battier, Bowen, Posey, Kobe) because they are just as capable of staying in front of fast PGs (which is, not at all), but at least are a little bigger. As for the transformation. I don't think we're looking for a complete transformation, but a mini-one, sure! And why not? We've proven we can't win with defense only. Why not try and improve on offense? Why not try and speed up the tempo a bit? Will Yao's game have to continue to change. Sure, but I think Yao would surprise you with how adaptable he is. No, Kidd isn't Magic, but again, the same things could have been said about Kareem and the Showtime Lakers. And we're not talking about turning into the Suns here. I'm just talking about finally having the ability to get an extra 4-10 points a game on fast breaks, which may not seem like a lot, but can get you to around 100 pts/game on average. It's the difference between a football team pounding you and pounding you and pounding you all game with the run, and maybe winning 15-10, or maybe losing 15-10, versus opening it up a little bit, more West Coast offense maybe, with the occasional deep ball, and trying to win 24-17. I'm not talking about that same running team, with the same personnel, trying to become the Patriots or Colts.
Kidd's admitting his time in Jersey is pretty much up... http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3219395 Kidd confirms that agent has been talking to Nets about trade By Ric Bucher Jason Kidd has come to grips with two realities. One, the New Jersey Nets aren't very good. Two, that their only chance of improving is to deal him. "I'm not mad at anybody," he said Monday afternoon by phone. "Sometimes, when you ride a wave, you get to the end and that's all there is. That's where we are." Kidd confirmed that his agent, Jeff Schwartz, has talked to Nets' management about moving him by the Feb. 21 trade deadline, but he categorized the conversation as a continuation of something that started last All-Star break, when the Nets nearly dealt him to the Lakers for a package of players that included Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown. The sticking point was that Nets president Rod Thorn wanted Andrew Bynum and the Lakers refused. While initial reports had Kidd, 34, insisting on being sent to a contender, he said Monday that he realizes there are no guarantees in any scenario. At this point, he simply wants to play for a team that can compete every night and utilize his talents. "It used to be if I got a triple-double, that was an automatic win," he said. "That's just not the case now. We tried to make this work. We've found out it doesn't. It's time for us all to move on." Schwartz, in exploring current options for his client with other NBA teams, has been told that with Vince Carter signing a new four-year $61.8 million contract and Richard Jefferson having three years and $42 million left on his six-year deal, Kidd is the only moveable major asset New Jersey has. There are a variety of teams who would be interested in acquiring Kidd -- Dallas and Denver already have reached out in the last week, a source said -- but it's a matter of what the Nets would insist upon in return. If draft picks are involved, weighing true value is infinitely easier after the May draft lottery, when the selection order is set and teams have a better idea of which players plan to declare their draft eligibility. ----------------------------------------- I'm sure Dallas would be giving up table scraps, knowing Cuban ... but if they weren't, and since we're talking fantasies anyway, I sure would love to target Jason Terry if he was sent out in a deal.
I would really hate seeing the competition get Kidd. Damn, that would be a bummer. If Dallas got him, it would be a nightmare.
If we manage to keep our trio of promising rookies, then Morey needs to get Kidd in a Rockets uniform. Yesterday. Otherwise, no playoffs. Hell, New Orleans is an elite team now. What happens if the Clippers come on strong next year when Brand is healthy? Do we still want to be gnashing our teeth when Rafer falls back into his missed-teardrops ways? When Luther craps himself in the 4th quarter and starts passing the ball to the other team? Has anyone seen Mike James? On a milk carton, maybe? And someone call Shane Battier, tell him he's no Rudy Gay.
Yep,we need Kidd as our PG,it's perfection. He is 35 yrs old although, but "it's time" his age isn't a problem. Unfortunately there is no way to get him without losing T-MAC or YAO!
u want jkidd? dude shoots as bad as rafer alston. sure he can run our O better but we're still a team that will be predicated on making open shots from yao/tmac. jkidd gets a lot of open shots from the doubles on vince and he still can't make 42-43% consistently. and he's 35. but obviously, if u don't give up tmac/yao and our young guns, why not? anything is an upgrade over rafer.
I played with myself for like an hour or something. I didn't come up with a thing. Maybe we should just leave Kidd in New Jersey and put this whole thing behind us. That being said, I'm going to stick with the Humer.
Kidd would be a great addition to this club. You're talking to about a guy with the most triple doubles since err who? He can penetrate and throw perfect passes to Tmac or Yao . Kidd is also a good rebounder and can bring veteran leadership to this team. I say give up anybody they want not named Tmac or McGrady.
It's 10:30 and I'm exhausted, but can't sleep...so please go easy on me: If Denver is interested, we could be the third player in the deal (works on ESPN Trade Machine) Denver Gets: Kidd and Hayes Houston Gets: Kleiza and Najera New Jersey Gets: Kenyon Martin and Snyder and Francis and Picks from either one team or both. I don't remember what happened with Martin and the Nets; did he sign with Denver for more money or was he traded...Besides Melo and AI, Denver doesn't have much to work with. But if you think about it, Martin could do well in the weak east as the inside player, they get expiring contracts in Snyder and Francis and picks to compensate for their loss AND save almost 6 million immediately. Denver gets Kidd, and also add Hayes as their replacement for Najera and and another body to play the 4/5. Rockets get Kleiza and Najera for their two weak spots. Be gentle...
what about this trade which works salary wise NJ Trades: Nachbar, Wright, Williams, Kidd, Jefferson HOU Trades: Tmac, Battier, James, Alston, Head, Snyder (+compensation either picks or $$) what do you think? I think it looks more like a team Adelman can have success with plus we get bigger at the 1 2 and 3 spots..just an idea
I dont really like any of the other players from New Jersey besides Kidd. Thier team is 18-26 in the Eastern Conference for a reason.
