I don't see definite evidence that the stereotyping is done by " White guys " on this thread. I brought this up because you're addressing White guys.

But more specifically, It's not out of the question for me to accept robbie's viewpoint. I haven't noticed this, but I won't dismiss it as being a ridiculous stereotype.

That's sad to hear how much Lamar has fallen. When I went there in the 80's its magnet and IB program were the preeminent public school program and HISD. It was a very diverse school with both poor kids from the wards, rich River Oaks kids, and better off kids from West U. The class I graduated in had a few kids go to the Ivy Leagues, a few to the military academies, myself to CAL and several to other outstanding schools.

 

Lamar is the most f'd up, garbage, drug, crime, and alcohol school that ever was. Damn near every student there was on drugs or drunk or a criminal of some sort. Hard not to get mixed up in that stuff. All of the priciplas and admin. and cops and faculty were/ are a bunch of bastards. Even the principal's son was a complete low-life scumbag loser criminal who got kicked out like twice every yr. Probably the worst 4 yrs of my life.

That's unfortunate for that girl that got beat up. In fact, it's pretty stupid.


I was talking to my friend sunday, and she told me she was watching the fight Saturday night with some folks. She was pulling for "the mexican fighter" Baldomir. Yeah, I know, girls are so stupid, but they look so damn delicious! We were talking about other boxers, and I brought up Fernando Vargas. I asked if she liked him, and she said yeah. I asked if she liked Oscar. And she was "no, not really." I asked her why, and of course, she skirted around the question, but I know why. It's cause he's a vato from Oxnard, or some **** like that. He's a homey, yo. And I think these Mexican types can identify with that. Cause being all "East Los' is all cool, and the way to be.
People don't like Oscar, because he is "All American," and a good boy. Infact, dude is a Golden Boy. They think he has sold out, or sells out to Mexicans. El Feroz, is a roided up, has been, but dude keeps it real.


I'm guessing the girls that beat her up thought she was selling out on being Mexican by not being able to speak spanish.

If there was ever a reason to fight, this was it. I am so happy that these students realized it was worthwhile to beat someone up because of the language they don't speak.

Now before the inevitable "RACIST!!!" dogpile, let me clarify that race is not the problem here. The girls were more than likely born in the United States, yet identify themselves as Mexicans. THAT is the problem; we are losing our national identity.

I'm not saying that WASP culture has to dominate, or that English should be the official language, or that everyone has to be "USA A-OK!" all the time; just that something needs to be done and done quick to reinforce the idea of the melting pot and a common interest of ALL people in the nation. It's one thing to be proud of your cultural heritage, it's another to cling to something that you're really not.

 

when you hear 2 guys speaking in spanish at a grocery store as you are walking by with your girl and you understand they are talking trash about her being with a white guy or you hear them talk about her and how she looks as she is walking by then you know it's not because it's a group of guys feeding off of macho energy. wow that was a run on sentence. it's part of the culture of the people just coming here from mexico and latin america. that's fine.

obviously, it doesn't happen that blantantly all the time but i think the guys do it because they think my gf can't speak spanish. it's really wierd. i mean she is DARK and some latin people think she is white lol. also, the vast majority of disgusting old man stares are from latin guys. like mexican said...it's closer to how they act over there. you are supposed to stick to your kind. that doesn't mean it's good...it's just how it is.

 

to this...i am not disagreeing that men degrade women when they get together. i am just talking about how forwardly latin men will do it within the presence of women. also the blatant staring is just much worse.

that being said, in general, the men in new york will act differently than the ones in texas. so it's where you are from and there are a lot of people from just across the border here in texas.

and i really don't know what i am talking about in here anymore. i feel like i am just rambling.

 

Lamar is not as bad as you make it out to be. I know a lot of people that go there, lots of kids who go to my school transferd from there, and I almost went there. Yeah, i'm sure there is a bunch of crime and stuff but that is in any school. There are also a bunch of rich kids there cause it's right near River Oaks, although a lot of those rich kids are the cause of adrug problems

 

We really need to find a way to divide up more and fight. We just don't do that enough.

How's this for a different point of view (and please understand that I'm not condoning any type of tacky behavior): It's yet to be mentioned, but perhaps we could chalk up some of this male behavior (i.e. staring, aggressiveness) due to a perception of "exoticness". After all, coming from an area where having light skin is rarified, I would guess that it may just add to a certain, unfamiliar mystique. Umm, that's just my two bits...
