Nothing new when I was at Lamar I used to get beaten up by all the Chinese guys for not speaking proper Mandarin.

 

Not equal in what way? Intelligence, athletic skills.. Care to elaborate?

I obviously don't think you're a racist, i'm sorry if i made it seem that way

and i have talked to a few other people about this very topic, and it seems, to my surprise, that some female friends have said that it does seem to occur more with men that were born in Latin America and have just recently arrived, so i'm assuming cat-calling and aggressively pursuing women is a cultural norm in those countries and is not here, so is that the answer? i guess i haven't seen it since me and my family were born and raised in America, i don't know what to think now, i just know me and my other hispanic friends don't degrade women this way, but what can i say, i'm done derailing this thread

 

i'm hispanic, first generation american, and i agree. to give you an example, i play on a co-ed soccer team and last night we had a game against a primarly hispanic/spanish speaking team. our team is more of a mix, we have white/asian/hispanic/black guys/gals on our team. anyway we were playing this game and next our field was a pick-up game with about 20 hispanic guys. anytime a girl on the other team got the ball they would start the whistling, catcalling, and sometimes yell some obscene/rude comments. but what i noticed was that those guys only yelled at the all hispanic team. they didn't yell at our asian/white/black girls on our team.

what i wanted to add was that anytime you get a group of guys together, they can be all of the same race/color/ethincity or even mixed, you will have that male chauvinism come out towards a woman or women.

my point, it's not because their hispanic guys in your story, it's more because there are several guys togther.

trust me, i've been to beach party and panama city spring break(white college kids) and mardi gras(veracruz, mexico) all those guys(black,white,mexican) were acting the same way towards women.

 

I grew up in southeast houston and went to Austin HS and South Houston HS. I have firsthand experience. And things were bad 15 years ago. I'm sure they are even worse now.

I actually did attend Lamar high not too long ago. I was class of 03.

There are always fights, but not because of race or ethnic, just because HISD kids are F*cking pricks. Anyone who went to high school in Houston can tell you HISD is by FAARRR the worst district in the city.

There are too many fights happening, but it just so happen that this one made the news because it was probably an interesting story.. Lamar USED to be that school that had good results and "rich" kids. But this was YEARRRRSSSSS ago, way before my time there.

I know people that still goes there, and that school is pure trash now. They instated a stupid dress code now (I know it's nothing big in HISD) but I'm just glad I'm not around to experience that.

The school is wayyyy underfunded. pretty much all of the extracurricular activities have their funds dramatically dropped to a point that I could even pay more for it.

OK now I'm just going on a tangent. Let me just end by saying that this is NOTHING new.. the news is probably just giving hispanics a bad name. News nowadays are pure entertainment anyways, with little information stuck in between (OK HERE I GO AGAIN ON A TANGENT).

Not to downplay your specific story, but this is not a true stereotype. Maybe in your experience, but certainly not in life in general.

Again, disagree. Also, I can, or at least my wife can, confirm the cat-calling, degradation, etc. from males of Hispanic descent. Though it certainly isn't clear if they are first generation, second generation, etc.

Now we know why you've stereotyped all groups of guys as one way. Try going to something other than an MTV party and you may find that there are guys out there, of all ages, who don't act like this, even when in large groups.

 

i'm just glad my brother goes to memorial as opposed to lamar.

 

its not racist to say that..."machismo" is a cultural fact of life in mexico. its funny b/c im not like that at all normally, but i travel in mexico alot and i find myself playing along (often the chicas are scoping you out first). when i come back to the states it carries over and im definately making more aggressive eye contact w/ ladies (for a couple weeks at least - "machismo" jet-lag ).

mexicans also love to lay on the horn while driving - not even in a mean way, its just something they do all the time. so when i come back to the u.s. i find myself honking alot more here - but in the states people can take offense to it.

back on topic though, that is just really sad. hope those kids get the maximum punishment possible.

I work at a contruction plant and I can tell you that even though 90% of the workers are mexican, and I know for a fact a few of them are drug dealers, I'm probably more threatened by the few white guys there who are probably into the whole "Marlboro Reds and **** those negroes" thing.

im not saying its bad, but that is the way it is. if you think otherwise than you have never been to mexico.

but robb's story was at a party. i guess i was not specific enough but my point was that i have seen white/black/hispanic guys degrade women at parties. not just hispanic parties.

i'm sure you can see that unless you are saying that hispanic guys do it all the time/all ocassions and white guys ONLY do it at mtv events/parties.
