we could argue who was better, or how much better kg is, but I know who I would want with the last shot in a time game or down one.
Didn't he sign an extension a few years ago? If he wanted to give his team the opportunity to sign more players, he could have just signed a new, lower value deal. He's chosen the money twice, the 2nd time after already knowing how it limits a team.
There aren't very many objective measures of sincerity, but clearly folks that work for 14 cents a week are pretty much immune to the cynical suggestion that they're just in it for the money... It might very well be true that Garnett values wins over dough, but given that his yearly salary is higher than any other basketball player in the league, this supposed attribute of his remains purely theoretical.
Believe it or not, he did take less than he could have gotten last time. I know that seems crazy, but the old CBA was crazy.
This topic has come up every now and then among Minnesota sports commentators and even some commentators have mentioned KG should go to another team and get a chance at a ring.
if kg is so desperate...he should come to a championship contender like houston and live out his final years...and for a bonus...we'll give the timberwolves jho...
When you are picking the top forwards to ever play this game, KG's name surfaces early in the discussion of the first 4 or 5 along with Bird, Duncan, Malone (unfortuntely) and Dr. J. Dominique isn't the argument until late in the top 10-15 at best after names like Barkley, Nowitzki, Baylor, and Pettit, Hayes, McHale, and alongside players like Havlicek, Worthy, Bernard King, Alex English, Dantley, Dominique was one of the most spectacular players to lace 'em up. But I wouldn't take him before most of the guys I just mentioned save possibly English and King.
I would not put KG better then barkley or Dirk those guys have take their team to the finals. KG is overrated, has been for a very long time. Superstar can elevate their teams. The wolves have had some decent players but they have never made it.
My post had absolutely nothing to do with Nique, and everything to do with KG, but since you mentioned it, I'll add this: Nique: poor defender. KG: Easily had the best sustained defensive run of any player from 1995 until. Or 1998 until now. Or 2002 until now. Give him a good forward or center to play along with, or point guards that actually play defense ... I shudder to think. I mean, KG averages 1.8 blocks and 12 boards career per 40 minutes ... and Ben Wallace averages 3 and 13 per 40. And think of all the other stuff KG has to do on the court. KG's defense is easily as good as Nique's offense, and Garnett's 20 points, 4.5 assists, and just 2.6 turnovers (in nearly 40 minutes a game), needless to say, far outweight Nique's defensive contributions. Take nothing away from Wilkins. He was and is underrated and should have been an easy top 50 guy. But Garnett is one of the best all-around players that have ever played this game. You got him. Me, I'd take Sam Cassell. And for the other 47:59, I'll take Kevin Garnett.
I'm no scholar on Nique, but I remember several times when he had the ball in his hands with a chance to tie or win a game and he usually didn't do very well. From my memory, he wasn't the best decision maker in the clutch and seemed to press and take bad shots in the final seconds of games.
I don't remember any Nique game winners, though KG had his fair share in 2004. Doc Rivers seemed to get the ball quite a bit, I do remember that. I don't think this is worth discussing, though, pg. It does a disservice to Nique to even bring it up, because non-ballhandlers rarely get the chance to be the hero late in the game. Dominique was a beast, but he was a scoring forward, a 2-3 dribble guy. Even Larry Bird had to cede to DJ, as Magic did early in his career with Norm Nixon. It's a silly argument. I mean, how many Tim Duncan game-winners can you recall? That's just not big man territory.
He could have let the old contract expire and become a free agent and sign a cheap contract either with the TWolves or with a winning team. Barkley did that with the Rockets, didn't he? Would doing your job for free make you a winner? Hey, I don't blame him for taking the money. I just question the statement "He would rather win than get paid."
Damn, Easy, you're right after all. Barkley did sign that $1million dollar deal so that Pippen could be traded here and stab Barkley in the back. So, um yeah, KG could have re-signed for like $1million...that would have been really interesting. But nowadays KG's salary is pretty standard for any superstar, maybe a little higher.
Even KG couldn't turn Minny into a contender at this point. But it'd be financially crazy for him to opt out and sign for the MLE to a contender like the spurs. So, what we're going to see is him wallowing forever in the purgatory that is the twolves. By the time his contract expires his skills will have diminished and we'll see washed up KG chasing a ring. He'll be insanely rich, though.
kg is in good health condition. i think he's kareem type of player... can play into his 40s. so still a dozen years left for kg
I would LOVE to see Garnett in Detroit. All attitudes aside: Rasheed/Billups/Dale Davis For KG Minny can opt to try to resign Billups if they want to after this season. Davis' contract comes off the books. They have to deal with Rasheed for 2 more years. A lot more wiggle room in salary cap than before. Mohammed KG Prince Rip Lindsay Hunter/Flip Murray/Delfino As for Chicago, it'll take at least a package of PJ Brown's expiring contract plus: Nocioni Luol Deng Chris Duhon To get it working under the CBA.
Certainly he could have signed a contract for any amount that he wanted. Of course, that's not what you said. You said |"He could have re-done his 100M+ contract years ago", which is impossible since the NBA doesn't let you renegotiate contracts. He did have one chance to take a lesser deal when that huge deal expired. As pointed out, he did infact take a much smaller deal that he was eligible for. Could he have signed for even less money? Yes. Would the T-Wolves have used that money to better the team? I don't know, it's hard to tell with their track record of personel moves. What I was pointing out was that the NBA doesn't allow you to "re-do" contracts as you stated.
