Magic's Howard, Rockets' Martin named Players of the Week

    Posted Feb 28 2011 2:41PM

The Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets' Kevin Martin today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 27.

Howard led the Magic to a 2-1 week, averaging a league-high 30.3 points on .673 shooting (33-of-49). His 14.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks were tops in the Eastern Conference. On Feb 25, Howard scored 40 points, hauled in 15 rebounds and blocked six shots in Orlando's win over Oklahoma City. He's recorded 10 straight games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, which is the longest streak of his career. Howard has 200 career 20/10 games and 37 this season. This marks the fifth time this season Howard has won Player of the Week honors.

Martin led the Western Conference in scoring, averaging 27.3 points on .517 shooting from the field (31-of-60). He shot .476 (10-of-21) from behind the arc and averaged 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals leading the Rockets to a 4-0 record. He's recorded three consecutive 30-point games, which is the most in a single-season for the Rockets since Tracy McGrady in 2006-07. On Feb. 27, he scored 33 points and went 13-of-13 from the line to help the Rockets defeat the Hornets.

Here is a recap of the week for Howard and Martin:

    Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic
Feb. 23 vs. Sacramento: Posted 31 points and 17 rebounds in a 111-105 loss to the Kings.

Feb. 25 vs. Oklahoma City: Poured in 40 points to go along with 15 rebounds, six blocks and two steals in a 111-88 win over the Thunder.

Feb. 27 vs. Charlotte: Tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in a 100-86 victory over the Bobcats.

    Kevin Martin, Houston Rockets
Feb. 23 @ Cleveland: Posted 30 points and five rebounds in a 124-119 victory over the Cavaliers.

Feb. 26 vs. New Jersey: Tallied 30 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 123-108 win over the Nets.

Feb. 27 @ New Orleans: Scored 33 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and two assists in a 91-89 win over the Hornets.

Other nominees for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Miami's LeBron James, New York's Carmelo Anthony, Phoenix's Channing Frye and San Antonio's Manu Ginobili.

Congrats to Kevin Martin for doing so well this past week. He has been putting up great numbers and I am proud of him. I am happy to see Kevin receiving some recognition around the league.

    Lock if posted.

Great for Kevin. I swear he scores so quietly, you have to give the box score a double take.

Give him an additional 5 shots per game, which would put him at around 20 shots per game. If you did this at his 44% field goal percentage, he would average about 2.2 more points per game, not including probably an extra trip to the free throw line. If Rick truly gave him the amount of looks like the top 5 in the NBA in scoring, he would average 27 or 28 per game.

This should be a positive thread. Kevin Martin has been playing so well lately. He is playing at an all star level right now. Making big shots against the Hornets for a comeback win.

This is a positive thread so please don't use this thread to bash and hate on him. Do not post anything if you're just going to bash and hate on Kevin. Given the rocky season the ROckets been through, this should be something we all should really appreciate because one of our players is playing great. So please, don't use this thread as an opportunity to bash and hate on Kevin Martin.

The other thread should be closed. I think this one was opened first and has A LOT more information. Thanks!

I think Kevin Martin is a great scorer. I hope he keeps up the 30 point games and pushes the Rockets closer to the playoffs.

Suck it DD and JCDenton!! SUCK IT HARD!!!!

Good job Martin. He has been playing a little more aggresive going to the basket and finishing with a dunk. He needs to do that more.

I think it's about time we stop whining about "we need a star, boo hoo" and recognize that WE ALREADY HAVE ONE!!

Martin is NOT a star. He is a 2nd or 3rd option.

Oh really? You don't watch any games, I see. And you are completely clueless about an Adelman offense at the same time.

So being the second or third option for scoring means a player isn't a star? I can think of plenty of all-star second options. If the Western Conference was weaker in terms of guards, Martin would be a lock for the all-star game. Not that it really matters, though. His play speaks for itself. Just because he wasn't voted in or chosen doesn't mean he isn't a star player. Now get back under your bridge.:rolleyes:

I mean this guy is a legit all-star level 2 guard, he just hasn't got recognized by the national media because of little playoff/all-star exposure.

Before his career is over, he will be a household name either with the Rockets or with a contender.

-To his credit, this season he has actually been pretty decent in comparison to the rest of the team on defense. He is also learning how to help win ball games in the 4th quarter. He is not just trying to get to the foul line, but trying to make the shot first, which was a major issue with Martin in "clutch" plays earlier in the season. He is an elite scorer who is actually improving.

-Happy you are a Rocket and congrats

So Wade and Bosh aren't stars because they are the 2nd and 3rd options behind Lebron in Miami.
