@JerryZgoda:[rquoter] If Love opts out after 3 years, it not only will coincide w/ Rubio's rookie contract expiring but also end of Adelman's deal[/rquoter]

Oh wow, talk about a major blow. They'd probably have a ****ty draft pick too.

According to Zgoda, the Wolves can extend this two more years prior to Love opting out:

"By reaching the contract they did Wednesday, the Wolves now can either extend Love two more seasons on Jan. 25, 2015 -- six months before he has to make a decision on that out option -- and essentially make this a six-year contract.

Or Love can opt out after three seasons, become an unrestricted free agent and still sign a five-year maximum contract -- one year longer than any other team can offer, and basically giving the Wolves' two "designated players" -- thanks to his earned "Bird rights" that will pay him even more than if he had signed that five-year contract now."

This seems like a smart business deal for the Wolves and as long as he stays healthy, Love will get his 5+ year contract.

if that is true and they indeed have the option to extend before he has an option to opt out, this is a brilliant contract

Like I said before, the way the wolves handled Love's extension will likely be the model going forward for all teams. The wolves are in a unique position: unlike okc who really didn't have another franchise player up for an extension, the wolves have rubio to worry about, not to mention b-easy and d-will.

They actually won't have a draft pick this year-- that pick was traded to the Clippers years ago (Jaric/Cassell trade) and now belongs to New Orleans (part of CP trade).

I am assuming it is more of a 'he has the option to accept an extension before his opt-out', and not a unilateral decision by the franchise to extend him.

They should have signed him to the full 5 years while they had the chance.

Yep, I just emailed Zgoda and Love has to agree to the 2 year extension (kind of an important detail to leave out of the article).
