That is Simmons' shtick. It's not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, it's just what Simmons is. With some guys it really works (Kevin Love is always a great interview when he comes on the podcast, Dirk had a pretty strong one in this same ASG2014 series) and with some it doesn't.

Generally how well these Simmons interviews go are a function of whether the guest thinks of the questions as typical media questions (they're not, so typical media answers rarely work well) or actually thinks about them and is willing to speak openly without worrying how it affects his image. It's true that Simmons presses too hard to get a non-cliched answer when he gets a cliche. That's a flaw to some, a plus to others.

Nicknames are given, not taken. Even with nicks that the player started himself, it still needs buy in from other people. King James is a natural fit as a nickname, and an obvious play journalists have been using since he was in high school. Because it works, people accept it; because people accept it, it becomes real. The Servant is a terrible name. No one will use it, so it's no kind of nickname. He'll stay Durantula whether he likes it or not.

@anthonyVslater: Kevin Durant backtracked on Servant nickname and certainty on RW's status, then said "Let's act like I never did that (Grantland) interview"

 

He obviously has no ear for how these play. It's not like it was an unwanted shaq-assigned nickname like "flash", durantula is awesome. Slim reaper might even be better.

this is the one area, they need to let the fans handle this.
