Actually it's possible. Slow and incremental mass gain would allow time for the body to adjust. Andrew Bynum gained a lot of weight during the off-season and he has rarely been healthy. Yao also started getting injuries more often after gaining some weight and shying away from the finesse game. So being light does have it's advantages, certainly puts less strain on your knees when you run and jump.
