He ranks 3rd in dWAR. He also ranks very well at pitch framing. Castro is a very good defensive catcher. He does get lazy sometimes and allow some passed balls that he shouldn't, but overall he is deserving of the nomination (Perez will win it).

Was his competent hitting of a couple seasons ago just a fluke? He looked absolutely dreadful at the plate this year.

If I remember he had an abnormally high BABIP, and based on his track record, it didn't look like he would be able to keep it up....... and he hasn't.

For whatever reason he started striking out... a lot. His K rate in his career went from 19%, to 21%, to 26%, and it has been up to 30% over the last 2 seasons. Meanwhile is walk rate has come down. His strike zone judgement now is absolutely terrible.

He had a pretty good and seemingly sustainable year in 2012, but his all star season in 2013 had fluke written all over it. High K rate, high BABIP.

Thread is about Gold Gloves and defense, it takes 2 posts for someone to mention how the player hits.

    Jeter-ed again.

Probably at least in part, it has to do with the atmosphere around him. That is the mantra of this team, hit it out of the park. Likely fairly easy for a guy to "buy in"

As for his defense, he is really good back there. As you said earlier, he got lazy a few times and those stuck out, but he is easily one of the top defensive catchers in the league. For those that have been talking about going out and finding a catcher, this is why that isn't likely

Dallas will be the only one of the three to win it

If they make a couple of other positional changes (LF/3B/1B) to get a more well-rounded lineup and upgrade the backup catcher (defense and RH bat) I'd have no problem with Castro being behind the plate for ~120 games next year.

36.4% caught stealing...not bad. 30% is usually considered "average" with 35% being above average. 40%+ is elite.

Agreed. Extend the line up and you can live with Castro. I do know there have been some questions about his arbitration amount for the upcoming season.

The only reason I dislike Castro is as somone mentioned, passed balls/balls in the dirt. He scares me in big situations behind the plate. As for hitting, there are maybe 3 or 4 good hitting catching in the entire league. Lets just not have a 1st & 3rd baseman hitting .200 and Castro's average really doesn't matter.

Ausmus got canned in Detroit, didn't he? Pay the guy to coach up our backstops for a few days this spring. Get Castro and Conger some of Ausmus's footwork and pitchblocking, and you'll have some seriously exceptional defense behind the plate.

Reports were he was going to be fired, but then they decided to keep him.

Ah too bad. Dude was wicked good behind the plate; a thing of beauty to watch.

Honest question... Why does everyone assume he would be a good teacher? I wouldn't call him lazy but he didn't work terrible hard when he was a player, he is just very bright and was talented defensively.
