And also considering the fact that the two seasons before the last one Hidalgo was out of shape and sucked. Even if we keep Hidalgo it will be for 1 year and then he will go sign somewhere else. No way do the Astros give him another contract after the way he acted when he signed his first big money contract with us.
Biggio is in serious decline mode. I dont mind trading Kent, because I like the fact that Hidalgo brings youth and potential to the table.
Trading Kent is unlikely as he gave Gerrya hometown discount to come here. I cannot see him being traed without his blessing. AS far as trading Hidalgo, Doggies' D saves untold runs over the course of a season. For every assist he gets he probably save 2-3 other runs because of teams holding runners out of respect for his arm. Add that to his offensive production and he is so far ahead of any other OF we have. If you factor in the defensive aspect of Doggies' game his probably one of the top five OF's in the game. Worth $12 mil/yr?. If we do not offset his loss with a player /pitcher who can make up for that influence over the course of a season then we lose about ten or more games a year in the standings by trading Doggie. Those kind of players cost big bucks. Do not just dump Doggies' salary. We must replace his production and while Pettite may bring in fans, he is unlikely to have that big of an effect on the field.
Off the top of my head in no particular order (and this is just the NL): Andruw Jones Barry Bonds Lance Berkman Gary Sheffield Vlad Guerrero Albert Pujols Bobby Abreu Chipper Jones Brian Giles I like Hidalgo and I'd prefer them not to trade him just to trade him, but I'd take any of the guys I listed over him for at least the next 2 seasons.
biggio needs to retire so we can get a good center fielder like cameron. he's a burden to the team right now
I like Kent, but I can't see Giving Dalgy another big contract...I would trade him if we could and we only have one yr. left on Kent's contract so I'd keep him... Either way, we need a consistent, reliable starting pitcher...
It's Doggy, not Dalgy. Sorry, I should just let it go, but I've been meaning to say that ever since I first saw you type it.
Let's look at the stats from 2003: Biggio - .264 AVG, .350 OBP, .412 SLG, 15 HR, 62 RBI, 116 K Cameron - .253 AVG, .344 OBP, .431 SLG, 18 HR, 76 RBI, 137 K Cameron had 4 errors and 3 assists Biggio had 1 error and 9 assists I would assume that Cameron has better range. Incidentally, Cameron generally batted in an RBI spot (5 or 6) and still did not "out-RBI" Biggio by much. Why do y'all think that Cameron is such an improvement over Biggio?
WHAT THE ****, YOU CANT KEEP TRADING AWAY TALENT TO SIGN MORE TALENT, YOU'RE GETTING NOWHERE WITH THIS TEAM DRAYTON. GOD HOW I WISH THAT MARK CUBAN WAS OUR OWNER...
I like Berkman. Do you think we could trade Hidalgo for Berkman? I agree with the list for the most part. Maybe not Giles or Abreu (wasn't he an Astro at one time?). I think Hidalgo put up better numbers than some of the guys on the list, but he has not been near as consistent.
The Astros always contend that they had to decide whether or not to make Hidalgo or Abreu available via the expansion draft. Abreu was picked by Tampa as a prearranged deal to be traded to the Phillies. I am always confused as to why it was Hidalgo or Abreu rather than Hidalgo, Abreu or some other player. Granted Hidalgo put up better numbers than some of the others on the list, but the other guys have generally been more consistent throughout their careers. The last 5 years Giles has hit .315, .315, .309, .298 and .299 with an OBP of well over 40% and a slugging percentage of well over .550. Abreu's 5 year average and OBP is about the same as Giles'. Abreu has a bit lower slugging pct. Both of them dwarf Hidalgo's 5 year numbers.
Derek Bell was the scape goat back then. The Astros only had 1 player who could bat cleanup, but they weren't going to move Bagwell from 3 to 4. Bell was the 2nd choise, based on the numbers. However, his numbers were based on the fact that he was being pitched to simply because noone wanted to pitch around him to get to Bagwell. Bell couldn't get a decent pitch at 4 without a power threat at 5 to back him up. Mental make up wise, Bell was the last player they should of had at 4. That was management's fault. And then the fans tore him a new one. That was sad! Bell should have continued in the 2nd spot with anyone else at 4 & things would have been a lot better!
I agree Pettitte is overrated and if he doesn't play here for cheap it is a waste. They needed get rid of Wagner to dump excess salary. They need to dump someone else to have the money to get Pettitte which IMO is not worth it.
