I agree with Kim, but I was also shocked to hear that the dog was put to sleep. I think of pets differently than cattle, but that doesn't mean I should -- it's inconsistent, I know that. As an aside, has it been confirmed that the plastic surgery and the dog bite are even related? I mean, KT could've been bitten by this dog, and just thought now was a good time to go in for those breast implants or liposuction he's been wanting.
those here that are dog owners will probably feel me on this one: it's not the dog's fault. they should have let the dog live. BACKGROUND: i have owned three (3) different wolves in my life. they are the best pets on earth, IMO. one died as a young cub (4 mos.), one was given away when i moved to san antonio @ 1 1/2 years old, and one died at right near 2 years old. A DOG'S/PET'S JOB: most people that own pets, especially dogs want AT LEAST some degree of these two things: companionship and protection. if someone invades the family's territory/space, it is the dog's responsibility (hopefully) to protect their environment. what K9 Thomas did, it seems, was a direct invasion of the family territory. he "leaned into the car window" and to make matters worse, it was towards the wife (my guess is the dog was a male. if you don't have a pet...don't worry about it). IMO, not only was it the dog's instinct to protect, it was it's job to protect. the only reason that dog was put to sleep, if you ask me (which no one did ) was because he bit "kenny thomas". most animals, which are well trained and not abused, are VERY friendly and not prone to out-of-the-blue attacks. they usually attack only when provoked (i.e. if they are eating, f8cking, etc.) or protecting their territory. my favorite wolf (if there is a "favorite") was ebony. she was over 125 pounds and still growing. the most docile animal you've ever seen...until that german sheppard decided to walk right into my fiancee and i's front door (which was wide open). i was not home. it was just my fiancee, who did not see the dog enter. ebony did not attack her right away. she only growled (which is pretty damn intimidating). once the dog starting walking towards my fiancee, ebony went straight for this sheppard's throat. my fiancee tried to pry ebony's jaws and fangs aloose from that sheppard. she couldn't. then it occured to her...she just stood back and said "ebony stop it!" and ebony turned that damn dog aloose. the dog scampered out the door, my fiancee was safe, and i gave ebony a 16oz, uncooked, straight from HEB, bloody steak. she protected the home. if only she could have warned me about my fiancee ("ex"....that cheating b****!). i digress.... point being, the car is an extension of the home, and i think boylen's dog was in it's right. ------------------ here's a verse: hating this name is a full time job for me; shandon in the nba is highway robbery! ps. was the dog's name Napoleon? little dog....mean attitude (grrrrrrrr.....) RIP. [This message has been edited by Shandon Anversen (edited July 10, 2001).]
Find me a dog that won't bite under certain circumstances and I'll find you a cat that won't scratch under certain circumstances. Fat chance in hell. Even if your dog has never bitten anyone ever, it still has the instinctive nature to do so at any time...no matter how it is raised. Just present the right scenario. That doesn't mean we should put all the dogs down. It means, as pet owners, we have a responsibility to prevent such scenarios from occurring. And, if we cannot, then our only solution should not be to put the dog down. That is the easy way out and how this family can have a good conscience after this...I would like to know? Did they do it because they feared it would happen again? Or did they do it because they don't want to own up to their responsibilities in trying to prevent such a future occurrence? Most dogs spend 95% of their damn time in their house or in their yard. It's not every damn day that a dog is in a position to bite a big black man peeping his head in a window and either KT or the owners should have known better. I don't agree with the dog being put down. I WILL NEVER AGREE. The only way I would agree is if the dog had prior incidents and there was no other recourse in the owner's mind. Otherwise, putting the dog down is an avoidance of a dog owner's responsibility for the dog and a cop out. This isn't a dog on the loose roaming the streets attacking children. Maybe if they have a child and fear for the child's safety around the dog, they should have looked into relocating the dog before putting it down. But, even then, they probably had the dog for a while and it was never a threat to the immediate household. In my eyes, they did not do enough for the dog and they might as well eat the dog while their at it. There is a difference between raising pets versus animals for human consumption. Sure, it may be hypocritical in that their all animals and most humans eat animal meat...but THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. If I had a cow as a pet, then I wouldn't put it under the knife and eat it...NO MATTER WHAT. Even those who eat dog raise two types of dog.....dogs for pets and dogs for consumption. They don't just eat any dog around. Surf ------------------
I don't know how to react to that story. I wanted to laugh, before later hearing that Kenny needed surgery, and finding out that the dog was done away with. In a way it's just terrible, but can you imagine the look on Boylen's face when he sees his mut taking a chunk out of one of his guy's faces! Priceless image, but at the same time hopefully Kenny will heal and this won't effect him. ------------------ Mmm Queso.

hey Kim: if God didn't want us to eat animals, then why'd he make them out of meat?? ------------------
sometime dogs are put to sleep to determine if they have rabies...maybe the dog didnt have it's shots and they wanted to make sure... just a thought.. ------------------
Wild animals are always killed. But if the dog is someone's pet, the official recommendation now (<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/epo/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00056176.htm">see Table 4 here</a>)is to quarantine the dog for 10-days observation to wait for rabies symptoms, and to prevent the human from taking the series of expensive shots. Only if the dog is very sick, badly injured, or showing rabies symptoms do they euthanize immediately. The shots are no longer painful, there are only 5 of them (yet expensive), so I don't know why they can't just quarantine the dog and give Kenny the shots as precaution. All I can think of is that they felt bad about Kenny taking the shots (although no longer painful), or they did not want to risk infection even after following standard procedures of 10-days quarantine being enough.
If so, Kenny just didn't want to take the 5 painless shots then. In fairness to Kenny, bites to the head and near nerve endings are considered more likely to develop rabies infection faster. And after infection begins, it is considered always fatal. Then again, check out this stat Human deaths from rabies in the USA: 1990 - 1 * 1991 - 3 * 1992 - 1 * 1993 - 3 * 1994 - 6 * 1995 - 4 Just take the damn shots, if you are so frightened.
I don't think anyone has said whether this was a first time or repeated incident (knows the history of the dog). If it was a first time incident--the dog biting someone in his space near his owner--than I do not think it is justified to euthanize it. But I (and ya’ll) do not have all the facts here, so I can't really judge the owners or dog at this point, it may very well have just been an isolated incident. If it was and the dog was put to sleep for convenience or financial security that is shameful. On another note, I freely admit it, on animal rights I am a hypocrite. A couple of years ago there was a California bill designed to keep horses from being transplanted to their slaughter (to make dog chow I believe). The bill sponsors included radical animal rights activists, as well as moderate people who just owned, cared for, and liked horses and didn't like the idea that horses should be made into food. This bill was defeated, and I voted against the bill as well because I don't have such a bond with horses or see them any different than other livestock. But you can be darned sure if your local supermarket started showing fattened-up dogs or cats in the butchers section for a neighborhood barbecue myself and 80% of the population would put a stop to it, immediately. It would just be too sickening for me (in fact any consumption of cats or dogs would be), as it likely was for many of the people seeking the horse ban. But I didn’t vote with them because of my own reality--not some objective distinction in the brain, mind or nervous system of the animal involved. Again, as this case shows, I am a hypocrite. Though I promise I won’t lose any sleep over it. Life and politics brings some pretty darned tough decisions when you really break it down. Complete consistency probably takes a lifetime, and then some.
If the coach took the dog to the airport, he would take it with him everywhere. KT would not be a stranger to the dog. the dog was probably spooked by the noise of the planes, and snapped when KT "invaded it's space". An animal which attacks KNOWN PEOPLE viciously should be put to sleep. ------------------ "Hakeem gets a 3 with the final shot" - my second favorite moment of 95 finals
"Not to get sidetracked, but DAMN, are y'all ALL OF YOU NON VEGETARIANS WHO ARE EXPRESSING ANGER AGAINST THIS DOGS DEATH ARE HYPOCRITS, HYPOCRITS, HYPOCRITS!!!" Wrong, the Boylens probably consider the dog a part of their family and love it. They have no relationship with some farmers cow or chickens. Some people love their dogs, birds, cats, as much as they would a child. ------------------ "banging Shaq is a whole different expirience"-Pete Babcock Behold the power of quotation
Ah, but Ziggy my friend from Quantum Leap, you did not read the next part of my post which said I do feel bad for the Boylen's for THEIR loss. Follow the logic here: losing the dog, like a beloved toy, is pain felt by those who lose it. How have ALL OF Y'ALL felt this pain? Y'all didn't. Was This dog YOUR loyal guardian...no. This dog was not a part of YOUR FAMILY. This means it is even MORE hypocritical to feel sadness for the dog if you eat meat. And if y'all followed my "hypocracy as the root of why people turn their backs when **** happens" rant, then y'all should know by now why this world is fukked up.
JR, what the hell are you talking about? I never said it's wrong to eat meat, I never said it's right. I'm not calling anyone evil either, I'm just pointing out HYPOCRICY! I do understand that y'all like dogs and feel sad when they die because they've been your companion...but Y'ALL ARE HYPOCRITS. C'MON, suck up that pride and admit it. Here, I'll start... I'm a hypocrit. Even though I stated I wasn't and didn't want to be, I at least am self aware enough to point out that it is an inevitable human characteristic of mine. Now it's y'all's turn. Now I'm not saying hypocricy is absolute evil, but I do believe that it is a BIG BIG BIG part of the problem in society. See if y'all can follow me... We don't care about cows because they are not our pets like dogs (hypocracy). I don't think this is absolutely horribe, but it is wrong, and this is why: because cows (pigs and chickens too) are not our pets we do the ABSOLUTE WORST THING to them possible. We eat them. We fukkin eat them. Does no one see a problem with this? Let's bring in a point a earlier made. We don't care about people we don't know. Same reasoning as above...but do we eat people?!? It should make sense to all you meat eaters (I'm a meat eater). Give me some logical reasoning as to why you can't eat people, then appy that same logic to animals and show me that you are not a hypocrit. I dare you. This is why it is a big problem. We might not eat people, but our hypocracy makes it sooo easy for us to turn our backs when crap happens 24/7 because it's not a part of our lives. Jamaican riots, Jews and Palestinians, Nigerian Christians and Muslims...THEY ARE ALL KILLING EACH OTHER!!!! Not to mention the homeless, the hungry, and the poor. To me, this is real messed up ****, but do you ever see this stuff on the BBS? NO!! I only can recall Jeff's compassion being expressed a few times. That folks is the root of hypocracy! We are horrible people who don't give a **** about other people because we don't know them. Same thing with animals. We can fukkin EAT ANIMALS and at the same time express sadness on this BBS about a damn dog being put to sleep. HYPOCRITS, do you understand me now? I understand y'all...it's because it's your pet...but, if you feel sad about it, stop the hypocracy and don't eat meat!
