looks confirmed.

Only a "New Team" has to submit extend an "Offer Sheet." The Right of First Refusal team ("ROFR") does not do this; they just go directly to contract negotiations, which would be instantly finalized upon agreement. The reporter is confusing the Qualifying Offer Kenny got yesterday, with an Offer Sheet, which, imo, puts everything into question regarding his source.

Here Exhibit G from the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

OFFER SHEET

Name of Player:

Address of Player:

Name and Address of Player's Representative
Authorized to Act for Player:

Date:

Name of New Team:

Name of ROFR Team:

Address of ROFR Team:

Attached hereto is an unsigned Player Contract that the New Team has offered to the player and that the player desires to accept. The attached Player Contract separately specifies in its exhibits those Principal Terms that will be included in the Player Contract with the ROFR Team if that Team gives the player a timely First Refusal Exercise Notice.

Player:

By:

New Team:

By:

Note where I placed bold, the Offer Sheet is not the contract. It comes with an unsigned contract that the ROFR team gets to refuse or sign. The ROFR team does not have to submit an Offer Sheet to sign their own free agent.

6 years, 50 mil for KT????

well, if the Sixers want to throw their money away like that, whatever.

KT is not a 9 million dollar a year player

I think this is the key phrase going into free agency this season, and you can substitute the name of every second tier free agent for "Thomas".
Why would any team this year do more than tender a minimum offer to get ROFR? I think (hope) this is the year the skyrocketing salaries finally sart to level off.
Sucks for Posey if he only gets a Moochie contract instead of a Taylor contract.

but the paragraph following that makes no sense wrt Thomas not having a lot of options:

Because Thomas is a restricted free agent, the Sixers will have the right to match any offer he gets from another team. With the NBA's impending luxury tax set to kick in at about $52 million - a team must pay a dollar-for-dollar tax on any payroll amount over that figure - owners are being careful about how they spend their money.

The luxury will not effect Kenny Thomas. That's for salaries of the salary season that just ended on June 30ths. The new salaries that kick in today are not being measured against the tax, only the 2002-2003 salaries are considered.

Kenny's negotiations will not cost the owner anything extra unless the luxury kicks in again *next summer*, and by all accounts, that will not happen. I do not think we will see a luxury again, past this Summer, with the league's TV contract going way up and all the Asian TV contracts coming on line, not to mention contracts in Europe and Latin America being worth more as their players excel. And further, the huge contracts grandfathered from the previous CBA, like Hakeem, Robinson, Ewing, Mourning, Larry Johnson, Karl Malone, etc, are coming off-line.

It really doesn't look like the Philly writer is getting much correct here.

Whoever makes the decisions for the 76ers have shown time and time again that they don't have a clue. From all those lotto seasons as recently as 95, they don't have a lotto pick left except for Iverson. Instead of letting the market set the table for Mutombo at age 34, they gave him a max contract, then a yr later they traded him for KVH and McCulloch. If they give Kenny Thomas that much money at that duration, they'll regeret it like most ofther teams do when they offer that combination. He should be under Ron Artest-Malik Rose money. A good price tag for thomas is a little more than the exception and i wouldn't give it to him for more than 4 yrs. 4yrs ,21m is enough without making the guy untradeable. I can almost guarantee that no other team in the league will offer Thomas more than the mle. He's a good role player, but philly should let the market set and not overpay a guy like Thomas like NY did Houston. I also noted where Dallas is really looking into Mourning and my response is Dallas can only offer what we can, so why shouldn't we go after him also?

If this is true, the KT should sent his agent a big christmas gift (somewhere along the 500 K range).

Neither Kenny Thomas nor James Posey is worth more than $5 Million per annum/season.

Any GM that will pay more than that is simply a compound F00L - Period.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Simply crazy. Over $8 Million per annum for Kenny? Gerrarohere......Not gonna happen.

do the math. assuming standard raises of 12.5%, the MLE comes out greater than $6m/yr. So, you are wrong if you think Posey and Thomas won't make more than $5m/annum on average.

think Phili would be interested in a sign a trade, it's a much better contract (per talent and effort) than a pile of ours

KT is a great hard worker and a hard-nosed PF. I think JVG would love him: he plays pretty good defense, he hustles, and he does the dirty work. He doesn't need to score to be effective because he clears the glass in a Barkley-esque sort of way. He deserves whatever he gets; if Philly thinks he's worth that much, I say good for him. He deserves it after all the improvement he's made in his game.

I think the improvement KT made and his potential contributed a huge portion to his deal. With no doubt, KT has been improving since his very first season, and he has done whatever it takes to improve (including the total-make-over weight loss :D, increased speed and various moves). Even Tim Duncan has praised his progress and moves to the basket. But well I still think 6 yr/ 50 mil is a bit too much for KT BUT it wouldn't be too far off from the fair deal.

On the other hand, even though Posey had done very well in Denver, since he joined the Rox, he hasn't shown any or much improvement or even dropped back a bit (with the presence of Yao and Francis though). Therefore, I think Posey or whoever demanding the deal for Posey can't just refer to KT's contract and request a similar offer. Hmmm...AND, there're other issues involved such as Posey's desire to stay here and their roles in the teams.
