The all nostalgia coaching squad, I like it. If you go back and look at footage from championship years, you always see Kenny leading the huddles before big games. His TNT segment is always very smart. Judging by these two things, I could see how he'd have the chops to be a decent head coach. On the other hand, they are such small glimpses into how he'd work that they aren't probative, just show that it COULD be possible. Maybe he's also secretly paranoid and pits people against each other, a la Mark Jackson. If Morey and Les pick him I'll just assume they have better insight than the average fan, and reserve judgment until the season starts.
I always thought Kenny would be a good coach and I thought he should get into coaching because it seems like he'd be good at it. But I didn't mean he should just go right into the NBA as a head coach. And I don't want Kenny Smith to coach the Rockets at this point in time just because it's such an unknown. But I hope Kenny gets a shot somewhere.
Promote Daryl Morey to Something higher Hire Chuck as the GM Hire Kenny as the Head coach Hire Jeff Van Gundy as an assitant defensive coach
Sean Jones mentioned that Smith coached his kid in AAU. Worried it would end up costing him more money having an NBA coach his kid...
If Morey and Les pick Kenny, then expect to have some experienced assistants by his side. The selection would be more of a "figurehead" move ala Kevin McHale versus a tactician. Kenny would have to set the culture and be a FA draw.
Can he be coach and also be a TNT analyst? I want to see him lay into himself with Shaq and CB when things don't go well.
LOL the Rockets want to hire Kenny Smith- so That Chuck and the TNT crew doesnt talk bad about us anymore.. If Kenny smith is the coach they would tall positive about the Rockets
I don't know anything about Kenny's fitness to be our next coach, but it does seem like a big risk; ala the McHale hiring. Not sure folks have the stomach for that kind of hire coming off a volatile series of organizational moves. The org has to restore trust from the league and fan-base. A Kenny Smith hire is more of the same wtf.
Hell to the YEAH! How they could pick him over Cassel or Elie - two guys with coaching experience is beyond baffling. The ONLY reason I could see is that they are following in the footsteps of GS when they picked Kerr - as if the picking of a TV analyst as head coach is some guarantee of success. And if that's actually the case then this franchise is worse off than we thought.
Big key to Steve Kerr though, was getting quality, experienced assistants like Ron Adams, Alvin Gentry etc. If the Rocket even strongly consider Smith for the HC position, they got to get him some strong bench coaches.
What a fabulous idea! Let's try the same approach that just blew up in our collective faces with McHale. After all, what's the worse that can happen?
Not advocating the approach. Just saying if they are going to do it, it has to be that way to have any chance of success.

IF they making some sort of attempt to actually make this work, then yeah, they'd have to do that. But Deuce they just used this same justification for reaching out into left field to hire McHale who had demonstrable deficiencies in the X's and O's of coaching. That was supposed to be OK as long as someone on his staff could handle the offense and defense responsibilities for the head coach. Given how all that just failed to work for them to go and do it again would be mind boggling. I am hoping against hope that this is some sort of misdirection ploy on the part of Morey to divert attention from his true plan.
