If we credit Kerr(no coaching exp b4 being hired) for learning from Phil and Pop. Well, remember not only has Kenny been around the game non stop since retirement just like Kerr, but he also learned from Dean Smith(UNC), Bill Russell(SAC) and Rudy T(HOU). So while there is no real coaching experience, there's no reason why he can't succeed surrounded by a stellar former head coaching assistant staff. I really, really wouldn't mind this choice. Vogel is my #1, but Kenny would be that big splash name that Les loves. We just have to hope we learned from the mistake of putting nobodies around McHale. We can't allow that. We need Hollins, Dantoni, VDN types on Kenny's assistant staff.

Yeah, that's kind of what I just said in another thread. Definitely risky... but also a move that I could get behind pretty easily. he comes off exactly like Kerr came off when Kerr used to do studio broadcasts or tapings. Might not work, but I can also see it working really well. Who knows...
The longer this goes on the more annoying it gets. If its between Vogel and JVG flip a coin and lets get on with the show. Kenny would be a good coach but the time is not right for that type of experiment
Exactly, what a waste of time and opportunity. We need to go after our main targets, Vogel and JVG. Line something up already. With all the open vacancies, it's an Coach's Market
If the interview goes well, I don't see why not. The thing that has me curious is that the Rockets haven't immediately set up the interview with Vogel like Cyber said. If he's one of the best available, wouldn't you want to interview and lure him right away? What I would question about Kenny if I was in the interview room is his defensive philosophy.
this is what has me confused.. you are interviewing everyone and there momma, but have not been able to secure a meeting with Vogel, JVG (Or even joerger before he was signed) Maybe the top tier are not intersting
Good to see people are finally putting two and two together. When you see the names of the coaches the Rockets have actually interviewed or plan to interview, it becomes pretty clear that either: A) We're being rejected by every available big name head coach out there. or B) Morey is a control freak who wants a coach who will run his style of offense and won't demand any say on personnel decisions. Either way, I think we're in for a long 2016-17 season. And by "long", I ain't referring to a deep playoff run.
Relative to being an NBA head coach, I don't think that's a big difference. It's a difference, but Kenny also has different things on his resume. And frankly, Kenny has been much more successful at that different thing on his resume - being on Inside the NBA for almost 20 years, during which time it has become much watch television, than Kerr was as an executive with the Suns, during which time the Suns generally speaking got worse.
I hope Kenny Smith recruits Chuck and Shaq as his lead assistants. Chuck to teach these soft guys how to defend and Shaq to teach big men like Capela how to shoot free throws
if I was a cynic I'd think they are interviewing Kenny for no other reason than as an opportunity to get on the good side of a popular national media personality. But I'm not, so I don't.

Kenny Smith has a good relationship with Rockets owner Les Alexander. It will be interesting to see. — @calvinwatkins
