You're going to kiss the baby at the end of the season about that remark. I was guessing you were using Chad Ochocinco's phrase to be funny. If not....sorry Lol.
I don't know about MVP, but he's certainly taking these first 2 games to remind everyone that he is right there with the Bosh, Wade, & LeBron FA talk.
You see him on ESPN in his head-to-head with Skip Bayless? Dude looked like he knew what he was talking about and seemed as if he'd be a pretty good analyst when he retires.
He took them to the playoffs in the west in all his seasons even when had total garbage for a coach and supporting cast.
That's a pretty bold statement for Kenny to make but not an awful one. As the announcers were saying during the game it does look as if Melo is holding himself on a different plateau compared to how he was the last couple of seasons. It seems as if he's worked on every aspect of his game, not just his scoring. He may finally want to be included in the Kobe, LeBron, Wade MVP discussions now that he's played with them in the Olympics and see's that they see him as a capable leader. I believe he can win it, he has a great coach, a solid squad, and has the mindset to become that. We will see how it goes, though.
I never said that it does not help him, that is why Lebron won last season, because he led a pretty poor supporting cast to the best record in basketball
That's pretty good subject to talk about. It is tough for me , because I don't really like Carmelo. But let's face it. He is the best scorer in the game now. Scorer doesn't mean he is the best we have right now in the NBA but when you want to put up big numbers (for example on your fantasy) you have to go with Melo. The other guy is probably Danny Granger. Can he win MVP? Sure he can. Nash won it twice in a row, Dirk won it after dissapointing loss to the Warriors (they were 1st in the West), so anything can happen. One thing you know, he will score a lot unless he gets injured. That's true. Carmelo just doesn't have 'it'. I don't know what it is but guys like Wade, Bron, Kobe do. For example, I do have a feeling that teams are more afraid of Billups when they face Nuggets than Melo. This guy can score. But can he make his teammates better. For example, let's say they don't have Billups and I don't know, maybe Nene or JR. Are the Nuggets a top 5 team in the West?
I don't think he would get it, even if he deserved it. People (atleast the people that matter to the NBA) just don't like him. But, I don't think he would ever do the things necessary to be considered. You need to either be a playmaker who sets the table for his teammates or a big guy who can force a double and get on the boards. It will be interesting to see how people manage their hate for Carmelo Anthony while praising Kevin Durant who seems to be on track to becoming a similar player in terms of impact.
I think its a cool prediction. I can see it. And if you think Billups is the teams MVP you are right. But so was Stockton when Malone won his. Carmelo will not win it unless the Nuggets get the 2nd seed. I don't see them surpassing the Spurs, Lakers, or Blazers though. So probably not.
Yes he does. And Kobe really isn't that valuable to his team. He is the best player on his team, but he doesn't produce the most. Last year Gasol led the team in total win shares in the season and was neck and neck with him in the playoffs. And this with Kobe in his prime and on a championship level team.
Melo can't even put together a great playoff series. How the hell is going to put together a great 82 games?
I think getting rid of Iverson had more of an effect than acquiring Billups. Any decent pg would have been an upgrade over Iverson. The team was already good. Nene(health), Birdman, Smith, Martin(healthy), and their depth had as much to do with the team success as Billups. The team just needed a PG who could distribute the ball and play some defense. Iverson was a problem in both areas. Again, I am not saying Billups had no impact but i dont think Billups is the their main reason for success. If they had Andre Miller. or someone in that rank, with that team they would have been almost as good as they are right now.
Its all about dispersing the MVP award to other players, so its not the same ones getting it all the time. Plus its about Kenny Smith trying to be influential and significant. The very fact that he can make a proclamation and rally the media behind his claim and pound it into everyone's heads, later on everyone will believe Carmelo is MVP. Then Kenny Smith gets the credit. Good work, Jet
Kobe made his contribution against constant double team, he opens up everybody else, including Gasol for many open shots. Sure Gasol is very important to Lakers, but saying he produces as much is a stretch.
He's definitely not an MVP for now. Chauncey is who made the Nuggets team formidable and a possible contender. But Melo looks like he's finally maturing his game on and off the court...he could very well become the MVP.
The MVP for the next few years is LeBron's to lose...with Kobe and D-Wade a hair behind him. IMO, the only chance that 'Melo wins MVP is if Denver gets top seed in the West.
