a guy at a bar I hang out at were having this discussion, Perkins know his role. defend the post, rebound, and don't ask for the ball. you see so many guys his size who don't understand that and don't last because they think they're big and they want the rock and won't do what the team needs.

"oh, you want me to defend the post, grab boards, stay out the way, oh is the thirty mil in the bank, thanks. do I need the rock, no thanks, I'm good"

APO, it would be nice if he could block shots, but then you have to pay him camby/chandler type money

I've never really understood the love for Perkins. He's a decent defender (he's not one of the best) and he's horrible offensively. If he was a great rebounder then that'd be something, but he's mediocre at that.

How much do you think he's worth? The Celts $7.5 million x 4 years is a very good offer IMO. I'd rather the Rockets target someone like Nene.

I agree it's good Perkins understands his role and tries to play within it, but I just can't get over how bad his hands are, how he cannot jump or run, has very slow lateral movement and how he's probably the slowest finisher in the NBA. It's painful to watch sometimes.

Perkins' limitations will be on even bigger display if/when he leaves the Celts. They are the perfect fit for a player who is a very good low-post defender, nothing more.

I don't know why people keep saying he can't block shots. The guy has averaged about a block and a half per game in his career despite never playing more than 30 minutes per game.

I'd rather have Nene. But Perkins is a good Plan B target.

Not an $8M per year plus type difference, IMO.

I get it: you're forced to pay a premium for size in this league. Unfortunately, in this league it's not all that uncommon to be forced to pay $8-12M per year for a player that amounts to nothing more than a marginal starter. I get that. Hell, it's the main reason why when Gortat got locked in at $6-7M I was all over us trading for him.

Regardless, with a new CBA looming and contracts like what Perkins wants being a huge problem with the current CBA, I'd like to think teams and GM's are starting to get smarter about this. You know, realizing you're paying for both ability and size.

And not to take anything away from Perkins as a player. He's a valuable defender and the closest thing to a 'Dwight Stopper' the league has. He just not worth crazy money like that.

Remember when Ron Artest came to Houston a lot of people felt the same way. His toughness gave us an edge that got us all the way to game 7 against the NBA champs.

I miss easy baskets. For example, when we played Memphis we couldn't get anything easy inside because Gasol clogged up the lane. It would be nice to have someone like that on our team.

    He's not a shot blocker?

In 2010 he only played 27.6 min/game and was still was #9 in total blocked shots. He also finished #10 in blocks/game in 2010.

In 2009 he was tied with Yao for #6 in total blocks. Both blocked 150 shots but Perkins did it in 1 less game played and 4 minutes less per game of PT. Perkins was also #6 in the league in blocks per game in 2009.

Perkins has been one of the best shot blockers in the league for the last two seasons.

People underrate Perkins. He is amongst best defensive centers in the NBA today.

Agreed. I find it kind of funny that people want Dalembert for his shot blocking yet Perkins has blocked more shots per minute that Dalembert over the last two years.

The other plus on Perkins is that in addition to being a very good shot blocker he's also a great post defender. Most other guys being discussed can do one or the other but not both. Having a guy that can do both is huge.

But having a guy that's a -10 on offense is small.

Right now, I definitely want Perkins to leave Boston to see how he swims in deep waters next season. I'll eat crow if I'm wrong, but doubt it.

Kendrick Perkins isn't a total zero on offense. The guy averaged double figures last season on 60% shooting. If he does nothing else on offense except rebound misses and put the ball back in the hoop then he contributes.

If Chuck Hayes could block shots like Perkins then would Hayes be a -10 on offense too? BTW, the Rockets can already score, we don't really need a center to do much more than get garbage baskets on offense.

If you're waiting for a guy that can defend the post, block shots and has a good postup game then I suspect that it will be a very long wait.

Agreed. Despite the holes in Perkins game, he is atleast average or above average in terms of starting Centers in the league and will probably command an appropriate market rate salary.

Jeff Van Gundy said he is a top 3 post defender.

Jeff Van Gundy knows his defense, I think.

Turns out he was offered 'only' a 4 year $22mil extension.

[rquoter]Perkins told CSNNE.com prior to Boston's 94-89 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats that the offer made to him was for four years around $22 million.

An earlier report by the Boston Herald cited two unnamed sources that indicated Perkins turned down a contract extension that was for four years and worth slightly less than $30 million.

"That wasn't it. They offered me four years, but it was closer to like $22 million," Perkins said. "You talking four years, $30 million! Shoot, that's different. That's a big difference."

When the offer was made, the C's had no idea as to when Perkins would return to the floor after having knee surgery, or how he would perform.

Needless to say, the 6-foot-11 center has exceeded everyone's expectations.

that's a slap in the face. Perkins should refuse to negotiate with them and come to Houston. ;)
