Kendrick Perkins can't handle Yao's girth and soft touch

uh, what... Perkins is the definition of a traditional center. You do realize he is 6'10, right? For comparison's sake, Dwight Howard is 6'11. Perkins plays a bit like Chuck Hayes, but that's not an apt synopsis of his playing style. Perkins relies on his size (height) and his bulky strength to smother his opponent. Not to mention he has a decently good amount of athleticism and is one of the better if not one of the best blocking bigs in the game today. Chuck Hayes can't do these things because again...he's 6'6. So yeah, Perkins can push Yao around a little bit, sometimes. However, Yao dominates that match up 9 times out of 10.

You can't use the center of gravity argument in this case. It really helps Chuck Hayes because he's so low to the ground in comparison to the opposing player. Perkins is around (maybe a bit below) the average height for a traditional center. I'm not arguing that he's hard to push around. But the fact of the matter is, Yao is bigger than him in every way. Once Yao posts up Perkins, it's over. Like I said earlier, you just can't defend someone that big 1v1, back to the basket. Yao can bang bodies with him all night and will get easy jump hooks.

Um..no. Yao has terrible lateral movement. Brad Miller and Divac weren't that slow. They can actually move around, unlike Yao. Not to mention they were both much better at actually holding onto the ball (something Yao isn't too good at) and passing it off. I like how you excluded my example of Chris Webber who was the true high post big man in that system.

Nice job bs'ing those reasons. Actually, in truth...Artest wasn't here that first year when Adelman tried that high post business. Secondly, even when Artest was here he very rarely posted up as opposed to jacking up a contested jumper.

Your stress on Yao's body point is true to an extent. However, that was before Yao got injured during the 22 win streak that has been recurring ever since. Furthermore, you just proved what I was saying by claiming that Miller and Divac were more fluid than Yao. It still has nothing to do with how mechanical Yao's shot is. He was draining those elbow jumpers like nothing, but they weren't efficient shots. You're not gonna block Yao on a jumpshot from 18 ft out.

The main point was that neither Miller nor Divac were the focal point of the offense so it made sense that they played in the high post. Yao is your dominant center/post up player. You don't take him away from his natural habitat. It doesn't make sense. Adelman's actions ever since then indicate the same.

I don't even understand what you're trying to convey here. Your whole point rests on hypotheticals. If Yao only played 3 quarters against Hayes one on one he would probably still drop 40. You just said he has a nice shot. There's no amount Chuck could legally "nudge" him away where he wouldn't be able to score. If you haven't noticed, Yao gets hammered like crazy. every. single. game. Yet the guy still manages to get the job done. Furthermore, Chuck can't stop Yao from getting position. Yao outweighs him by about 60 lbs at least. Center of gravity plays a part, but Yao would still back him down. Plus, Chuck would be too short to adequately front him.

You're right, Chuck is a great post defender. But let's be realistic here. He relies on positioning, his great hands, and a high basketball IQ to get it done. Sure, he can stop some centers from backing him down on a couple of plays. But that just doesn't happen all night long. I've seen Chuck playing behind KG and absolutely stop him from moving. Yet on the next play, KG got an easy turnaround jumper on Chuck 5 ft from the basket. There is only so much he can do.

Did you watch the Rockets play the Lakers last year? There was only so much Chuck could do against those huge trees Bynum and Gasol. I mean I love Chuck as much as the next guy, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...

There are a lot of Rockets Power Dancers whose girth and soft touch I'd love to handle.

(Sorry if someone already made a comment like that.)

This is the kind of wordplay thread I enjoy. Just don't try to top yourself with some ironic poll.
