Good post. This is most likely what Morey is thinking.

adding this to thread for context... what's with the "Draft=PF✅⬆️" ?

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/AQS18">@AQS18</a> issues w/him=character based, FWIH. But like I said at trade DL...yeah. Faried <a href="https://twitter.com/buylow">@buylow</a>=Value. Overhaul in Houston? TJ✈️☔️ Draft=PF✅⬆️</p>&mdash; Doc Rocket (@Thedocrocket) <a href="https://twitter.com/Thedocrocket/status/613085516540481536">June 22, 2015</a></blockquote>

Most likely, this would be a trade up a few spots from #32, using additional assets (Nick Johnson? A future 2nd rounder? Taking on some salary?) to do so.

The downside of doing so would be that a late first rounder would probably count between $1 million to $1.5 million against the cap next summer, whereas an early second rounder (like the 32nd pick) signed to a two-year league minimum deal (which the Rockets can do without touching the MLE) would only count about $875k against the cap in 2016.

However, that difference is fairly small and may not outweigh the benefits.

With a first rounder, the player would be LOCKED IN to his miniscule rookie scale salary. As K.J. McDaniels himself showed us all last summer/fall, some top second round picks may start electing to take the one-year rookie minimum tenders in lieu of multi-year deals in order to hit (restricted) free agency earlier. This may be especially true with this draft class, since the summer of 2016 is going to be the free agency bonanza to end all bonanzas. The qualifying offer to any such player would be ~$1.075 million, with the possibility of having to spend up to the MLE amount on that player in free agency.

So, if a "Tier 5" player who the Rockets like is on the board late in the first round, they may very well be willing to move up from #32 to grab him, realizing that they may be in a better situation (contractually) getting him at, say, #27 than they would be getting someone lesser (or even that guy!) at #32.

The main asset to me is getting a young player locked in on a cheap contract. The difference between the 2nd round pick's salary in 2016 compared to their salary as a 1st round pick is nominal, and can easily be worked around if you're going after big fish in 2016.

Can you imagine have 2 1st in this draft, plus Capela, maybe McDaniels, and DMo as trade bait?? And even if they aren't trade bait.......you've got a bevy of young players on cheap deals to support Harden, Dwight, and maybe a 3rd star signed next year for many years to come.

    Again, for fun:

    1) Rockets not interested in Ty Lawson due to character issues
    2) Faried is a buy low target
    3) TJones getting traded
    4) Drafting a PF

The real story is, if it's a player DM is targeting, and wants to have on the squad next year, then don't lose him since he might be drafted 25-35, even if you think he might slip to your spot at 32. If he really likes a guy, be in a position to get him.

It would also indicate they aren't looking as hard at those international stashes at 32 this year as they might have in the past.

    ...

Or maybe he's looking for even higher picks as others have suggested as part of a bigger move...

    Guys...it's happening

We acquire another first round pick and we can meet the asking price of 2 first rounders for Ty Lawson.

I could see a TJ for the #23 via Portland as a possibility, especially if Portland is truly concerned about LMA leaving. Makes sense for both parties, and I think TJ would be happy with the trade.

#18/#23 should be able to net you a very nice Vet from a rebuilding team.

    Sounds accurate to me.

TJ getting on a plane to somewhere rainy. Perhaps Portland, if the Blazers can't keep Aldridge. (That homeless guy in Portland is crying right now)

Not sure if we're drafting a PF, though you could be right. That up arrow is interesting. A PF upgrade through the draft? Are there better players than a proven DMo? Or are we trading up from where we are now to draft a PF? Are we trading a PF to trade up?

    So many questions!

No chance TJones is worth a top 16 pick. Maybe you could get a late first, but more likely not.

That makes a lot more sense and seems to be much more plausible.

i agree with this interpretation of doc's post.

i think the rain emoji is definitely portland. he's from there, they may have some interest in either adding him as LMA's backup or replacement. i think the 23rd pick might be about right.

maybe #18 and #23 with papa and prigs gets us faried?

Gotta save the whole MLE this year. Can't break off a piece.
