Actually role players are a dime a dozen. Look what it took to get Garcia and to sign Delfino

Give me the stars first, worry about filling out the roster after.

where else...the scrap heap. The Rockets picked up Delfino after the Bucks didn't offer him a contract and let him walk. Garcia was just trade deadweight.

No chance. These guys were great for us this year but Garcia especially would cost too much to keep. Delfino has a slim chance. We all know Morey has a knack for finding role players that are a good fit so most likely these guys are out and we'll look for another cheap option. I really wish we could keep both and had no idea Garcia was such a good defender, but I don't think its happening.

Even if we strike out on every free agent of the offseason, the Rockets will still decline the option on Garcia. They won't pay $6m+ for him regardless. They might make a half-MLE offer to him, but they'll take the risk of him leaving over paying the option year price.

And, with Delfino's fractured foot, they might not give him any kind of offer.

Forget about them competing with Dwight Howard for payroll dollars with those dynamics. These guys aren't worthless, but they aren't worth so much they change your plans for building a contender.

perfect example of fans overvaluing players. They were great for us this year, but they are easily replaceable.

Getting overly attached to role players is the exact opposite of Moreyball. In fact, it's dangerously close to Dawsonball.

Both team options will be declined, but I'm sure Morey would love to re-sign either of them if there is room after the main off-season moves.

Very good news, but i wonder if he would still choose the Rockets if another playoff team offered him more money.

Garcia and/or Delfino will only be brought back if they are still available after we finish our pursuit of Dwight, Paul, and any other free agent or trade targets that Morey wants to go after. So if someone likes them and gives them a decent offer first, I'm sure they'll take the sure thing and leave.

Personally I would give Garcia a 2 year deal with a team option 3rd at about $3-4 per once the dust settles if he's still there. Let Delfino walk unless he comes back for another one year deal or partial guarantee.

Good defenders who can consistently make the open three pointer most certainly are NOT a dime a dozen. Please see http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=238084

I really want to see Garcia back. I like Delfino, but I don't think he is nearly as valuable as he doesn't play the same defense.

Hopefully we can decline the team option on Garcia and sign him to a 3-4 year deal at a lower rate like $2-$3M. Win/Win

If we cut Garcia and Delfino - Budinger, Barbosa, Randy Foye, and Mike Dunleavy are a few names I would watch for during free agency. Guys that you forget about but they still have some value.

I read that ALL player contracts on the roster are controlled by the team through 2014. So it isn't a matter of anyone making them a better offer. They both have team options for the final year.

I agree with the consensus here. Both are gone and both could come back. If after all the free agency drama has unfolded and we still have money left than I sign Garcia for what Delfino is getting. No one is signing an injured Delfino. Sorry for him, but if Delfino heals well and come december or so there is still a need for him than we sign him. He might be available for the vet min.

I really like the fact that you listed names of players who you think could replace them instead of just blanketly saying - role players are a dime a dozen. I admit that I don't know a ton about most of the guys on your list. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but none of those guys are really known for defense, are they? That's why I like Garcia - two way player. Not a liability on either side.

I'm a big fan of both... and both will have their options declined...

Delfino's injury makes him too great an uncertainty to tie up cap space on and Garcia's 6.5M is too much to pay a role player...

After the major free agent dust settles, hopefully they will be back with the Rox, but make no mistake, they will both have their options declined - and it is the right move.

I agree with everyone saying that they are easily replaceable, but I don't think you could replace their intensity and their experience in the playoffs, especially Garcia and the way he defended and bothered Durant throughout the series.
Both of them played great in the playoffs and I would love to keep them both.

Delfino is a scrub. The Rockets need to part ways with him. I agree with most here that he is easily replaceable.

However, I would like for Garcia to return - but the only way that happens is if Houston declines his option and he re-signs on the cheap. I like his defense and his veteran presence. Role players who can make open shots and play solid one-on-one defense against good offensive players are NOT a "dime a dozen". Most NBA role players are poor defenders, IMO.
