I know to be a professional Jalen Green hater is to deny that he has any redeeming quality whatsoever, but even if the Suns want to give all of their money to Devin Booker rather than Jalen Green, there's a reason why tehy wanted Jalen and not say Fred (who would have been actual salary filler given he was expiring) or some motely collection of Jock & Jeff Green & Jaesean & Whitmore and whatever.
Does the trade work with fvv in it? Maybe all the reporting was wrong but I would doubt it. He might have some redeeming qualities and still some potential but he’s certainly a negative value contract, certainly nobody would deny that.
Yes, you could absolutely have exercised Fred's option and put him in the trade. Thinking of Green as dead money is nonsense. Phoenix of all teams which is about to stretch Bradley Beal at hideous cost is not taking on dead salary for the sake of filling a slot.
But the rockets are trying to compete, without fvv we have no PG, i don’t see how that was an option.
Ok wahtever, anyway when the Suns stretch Jalen Green you'll be proven right that they never really wanted him and you can bump this thread.
It's impossible for them to stretch him b/c of the beal stretch, you can't have over 15% of your cap on stretched contracts.
Technically, yes, the Rockets could have put in FVV instead of Green and Brooks if both sides wanted it. The Suns don't have to stretch Green for the Rockets to have roster/apron issues if FVV was in the deal instead of Green and Brooks. There are a lot of reasons for FVV not being in the trade. The two biggest ones are that the Suns didn't want FVV at $44M, and the Rockets wanted flexibility to build a roster around KD that they now have. The Rockets, unlike the Suns, know how to manage their financial situation. Now, if the Suns had wanted FVV at the trade deadline earlier this year (i.e., wanted to decline the FVV's trade option to save hundreds of millions of dollars without needing to stretch Bael), that would have made more sense than the trade that happened or the one proposed with FVV on the team option.

This is a disingenuous take because there is a difference between FVV and FVV on the $42mil contract. In addition, FVV on that contract means the Rockets will have to attach a younger player to the deal rather than Dillon Brooks, due to Phoenix unable to take in more money than they send out. If you want to say Jalen+Brooks is more valuable than FVV on his max contract, ok. But a large part of that will also be Brooks' value to Phoenix, and the fact that FVV is dramatically overpaid and nearly unmovable at his new contract. And Jalen doesn't need to positive trade value for the above equation to work. In fact, that Phoenix couldn't find a taker for him, as well as how little Norm Powell was traded for, how little Cam Thomas is seemingly being squeezed in his RFA, just shows how much the Rockets didn't really negotiate in their original extension with Jalen.
