Plus, The whole 1 year and out thing, in my opinion, is gonna ruin college basketball! There will be no more dynasties in college ball. They also waste scholarships when they go for just one year.

Its not only about who gets in, but how many they're able to leave out.

If there were 5,000 NBA player jobs available, there would be no NCAA Division 1 as we know it because there'd be enough for everyone. Since there's just a select number of jobs in the NBA and far far more applicants than positions, they can set a requirement standard.

If there's 20 jobs open and 100 qualified applicants, 80 of those wont get in. They have to go somewhere, but it cant be the NBA. Thats probably how they look at it

He didnt even retire, he got waived and is playing overseas. He started NBA as a teenager so it mighta seemed high schooly. Even now he still acts it

It also puts pressure on the coaches to put incoming superstar prospects ahead of the team...

I see what KAJ is thinking, but the rule is very unnecessary.

Even as the rule stands now, I really do not like it or think it is fair for the prospective players or college students in general. What is the point of bring in a student who most likely one or two years and done. Moreover, it begs the point, if the student was barely qualified to be a college student or have shown themselves to not be college material, while they are very capable of being fairly decent contributor on an NBA team or Euro squad. There's really no point for them to really go to school.

Besides, these are grown men, who can decide their own futures and career aspirations, if he goes spends his money foolishly then that is his own doing, as if he wisely saves and invest his earnings into respectable activities. Regardless, of which path he chooses, he should be able to decide that on his own.

i think basketball (or sports in general) is different from the field you mentioned. a PhD is like the highest degree you can get and you must go through school before you can even apply for that degree.

with basketball, it's very different. how can you say lebron james must play in college for 3 years when he obviously can be an all-star almost immediately at age 18? and who is to say someone going to college will make him a better/smarter player. (this is why your comparison is off. someone with a BS in biology who goes for a PhD or some higher degree will obviously have more knowledge and thus more eligible for different jobs once he graduates as compared someone without one).

however, that is not always the case in basketball. we have seen many players who have gone to college and struggled mightily (o'bannon from ucla back then for instance). maybe their games fit the style of the NBA more (and as we all know, the college and NBA games are completely different). just because you play college does not mean you are more prepared to play the NBA game.

like i said, it's up to the GMs of the teams. you get to scout and watch them live in person for a year or more. you should know "roughly" how good that player is or will be. they do NOT have to draft those players.

there are other factors involved as well. TJ Ford wouldve stayed for his senior year at UT but the rumor was he got injured playing a pick-up game and it scared the crap out of him that he could've hurt his chances to play in the NBA.

So, health is also an issue. at least if they get injured in the nba they have their a$$ covered and theyre drawing a paycheck.

but yeah, Stern needs to be ousted. i say make Mark Cuban the commissioner after he sells the Mavs...
