i was thinking about this today. like pgabriel might have a point. yes, West does hype himself to a CERTAIN extent and he does talk about the finer things in life in most of his songs but i rather listen to him rap about it and put it into some kind of lyrical context than rappers that just proclaim 'rims real big. cars real big.'

it's like saying McGrady is just another scorer or dunker...sure he does all those things but he does it damn well.

and West ain't the best lyricist, that I can agree on. But the lyrics, the rap, the beats, everything just flows.

I just got ahold of the album and it's fabulous. I'm not sure there are as many standout tracks on Late Registration as College Dropout, but the album seems a lot more consistent and solid from top to bottom.

Listen to Crown City Rockers or Black Star for some decent hip-hop.

Its somewhat hard to say that Kanye is 'better' than any htown/southside rapper. Kanye is different... Hes still developing his lyrical style which is very different than others. His delivery and rhyme scheme are gonna be much different than any southside rapper because its just different jargon in the north. Its like when Eminem came out. His delivery and rhyme scheme just made him unique compared to anyone else. Southside rap is a completely different flavor of music than Kanye, Jayz, Nas, 50 or whoever. Young Buck, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, UGK, and even Z-Ro are EXTREMELY talented. Listen to their songs and lyrics. People like Lil Flip and Mike Jones are just wayyy to repetitive. Personally I think Mike Jones is the most overrated rapper out right now. Also, Ludacris has got some ill lyrics and cannot be overlooked when talkin about the South.

ps- late registration is pretty good with no real club jams but mostly chillin music, but his style and beats are starting to sound the same and i think he needs to keep on evolving. Also, listen to Game - 300 bars for some good lyrics.

Most rappers brag...it's the "battle" part of the medium. Nothing new there. Rakim, LL Cool J, NWA/Ice Cube all the way to DMX, Nas and Jay Z. Most of those same guys also bragged about sexual prowess as well...again pretty common in rap.

It seems all of the popular rappers today are about money, bling and whips. Since I'm old school I miss Run DMC, Public Enemy, X Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Pete Rock/CL Smooth, Boogie Down Productions, Main Source, etc. Though these guys were not perfect either, they tried to deliver a message to the masses and hoped to change the world around them.

I'd agree that Nas is probably one of the better rappers today. His lapse during Jay Z's reign as the so-called King of Rap seemed to change him for the better. I don't see him ever doing another "Oochie Wally"-type song. I think he knows he's beyond that stuff now.

Rap is pretty broad so there is plenty of room for everyone. Props to Kanye and Nas for moving on to something positive. Hopefully more rappers will follow! :)

Yes, he specializes in the North Coast rap along with Threepac and Smallie Large.

The problem I have with the south rappers with the exception of Luda, Scarface, Outkast, and a few others is that none of them tell a story. Most of them are just rambling, throwing in lyrics that are disconnected from one another, with none of it coming together to make a point and paint a picture in your mind. What happened to storytelling? Man, Slick Rik was the master of that, dude was awesome!. These days rap lacks that. Kanye is good because his lyrics flow smoothly and somewhat tell a story. DMX is another that paints pictures in his raps (albeit a verrrry grimmy one) which is why he is one of my favorite rappers ever. Jay-z is like Kanye, very clever lyrics that tell more of a story and flow so smoothly. Nas is like that as well. Eminem too but he is getting annoying because he, like 50, just tries to make controversial songs in order to sell. I like Em alot but 50 has become irritating. Alll he does is make beef songs to get attention.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes and Music is hard to say what's great or not because it is subjective to the person who listens to it, kind of like food, not everyone has the same taste. Personally I just can't stand the houston rappers that are blowing up now because they just don't sound good to me (I hear a bunch of yelling and screaming, with little substance), but that's just me.

Got it today, thus far I am semi-impressed. I like his collaboration with Paul Wall, but over all the CD isn't a standout like College Dropout was. Still, it is worth $9.99.

i believe that could be one of the longest diss tracks ever made upon one group; one 18 minute long diss on g-unit, starts to become a little bit repetitive towards the end

Paul Wall, Cam'ron and the queer singer from maroon 5.

    The trifecta of intolerable cockfloundery.

Just picked it up from Walmart. Unfortunately, Walmart only sells the EDITED versions.

    No good.

My first impressions is that it is jammin...but I have to listen to it more to get the full feeling. It is definitely a different sounding album than "College Dropout." Favorite song besides "Gold Digger" and "Diamonds" (og & rmx) so far: "Roses" goes hard!!!
