What? I don't understand. So he's not allowed to rap about different topics?

    HAHA

First of all, It's "Z-Ro" not "Zero". Second, he doesnt just yell and scream about nothing. Finally, Kanye does not **** all over Z-Ro, lyrically that is...

I like a change of scenery from listening to who a guy's name is, what kind of rims he got and how he likes his women and how he wants to get with them.

I just think this is the best part of the thread and should be repeated.

See that's my point, he's not different. Instead of bragging about coming up from the drug trade, Kanye brags about how he came up from being an average guy. You mean to tell me Kanye doesn't brag about the things he has? You mean to tell me he uplifts women in his GoldDigger song? He's no different, he just doesn't talk about drugs.

Even gangster rappers make one or two songs about God and fears in life. Kanye does it and everyone says he is the newest thing, but I swear I don't know what you guys are listening to. I've heard Kanye talk about his cars, his bling.

Kanye is a perfect example of if you keep telling people its something its not they'll believe it.

IMO the best mainstream rapper is still Nas or Mos Def. But I know alot of people probably wouldn't agree with me. I really think rap is in a bad state right now. I really don't buy a lot of albums like I used to, I've been meaning to buy Slim Thug's, and I will probably buy Kanye's.

I don't dislike Kanye, I just think as a "rapper" he isn't what people make him out to be. But I love his production so much that I will buy his album off that alone.

He isn't that great of lyracist, and I'm not even talking about subject matter. He drops a few nice punchlines in his songs, but his songs have no replay value. Not like top notch lyracists, like Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z. I can still listen to these guys' first albums. I can still listen to Mos Def's first album. I cannot listen to College Dropout anymore. His lyrics are catchy when you first hear them but they just get old after a while.

Although Mos Def is quite popular, I wouldn't necessarily classify his music as mainstream...

Okay, I didn't want to do this, but this is Kanye's first album(Excluding skits, intro's, interludes, etc...).

    2. We Don't Dare - Satire
    4. All Falls Down - About his own self-esteem/materialism issues
    6. Spaceship - His struggle as an African-American working in the average retail job
    7. Jesus Walks - Ummm, Jesus
    8. Never Let Me Down - About various things, and Jay-Z's flow seems really irrelevant(Pretty good, though), but definitely not hoe/drug-related or bragging
    9. Get Em High - Okay, yeah, club-type...It does have Talib Kweli on it though.
    11. The New Workout Plan - About girls, but like Golddigger, but not hoe-related...refers to, well, gold-diggers, the portion of the female population who really do target rich men
    12. Slow Jamz - Cheesy, slow song, no hoe - talk
    13. Breathe in Breathe Out - Satire
    15. School Spirit - Relation of his college experience
    17. Two Words - Awesome, awesome song, features Mos Def
    18. Through the Wire - Relation of his near-death experience, no gunshots
    19. Family Business - Family and stuff
    20. Last Call - Relation of his getting a deal

So, in conclusion, he is different. He doesn't rap about cars, bling, etc... He doesn't rap about hoes(Golddigger and Workout Plan are completely different). I'm not going to say he's an awesome rapper, but he has good subject matter, he's a pretty good lyricist, and he's an awesome producer.

I'm looking forward to Late Registration.

I'd say Mos Def is pretty mainstream, though not as much so as Talib.

Does he hype himself incessantly? When he talks about his near-death experience, does he relay what he was driving or wearing? Does that not qualify as bling? How many times does he bring up his accident? How does "satire" like "Breathe In, Breathe Out" *not* make Kanye just another rapper?

I love College Dropout - I think it's an infinitely replayable CD, but please. He's not this pious guy who raps about his own thing. He has a bursts of unique hip-hop brilliance, not bursts of mainstream rap.

Sellout or don't sell out pgab.

Nas is the best lyricist mainstream has seen to date. Illmatic to Ether to One Mic, it's a joke how good he is.

Kanye doesn't really have the great talent but he brings something new and at least a little varied from nowaday b****es-n-hoes 20s-n-fo-fos rap. I'll take one kanye west over 10 young jeezys or whatever the **** every day of the week.

A line or two in a song doesn't make the song...The mention of Versace in "All Falls Down" doesn't make the song about designer clothes. In the same way, a line in Through the Wire(?, I'm not sure exactly what line/song you're talking about) doesn't make the song about his bling. The fact that Kanye acknowledges rapping about the stuff he raps about in "Breathe in, Breathe Out," as a joke makes him not just another rapper.

Ask me this time last year, and I would have told you Kanye's debut was top 10, all-time. I've since heard a lot of music, but Kanye turned me onto a lot of new music. I don't think I would fully appreciate Jay, Nas, and Kweli if it weren't for Kanye. He's a good rapper, certainly not great...if it weren't for his own production, I don't know that he would really turn any heads, but he does rap about what I consider better than average subject material.

I think Kanye has fallen victim to Dave Matthews-syndrome...he's just one of those people that people like to criticize. People who don't particularly like him like to criticize him. How many people get criticized for remixing one of their songs into a protest song? Is he sincere...does he really care? Does he really care about the use of gay as a slander? I don't know, but it still makes for a good rap song with a positive message.

College Dropout is the best rap album released in the last three or so years. Looking forward to the new one! And yes, I will buy it.
