I'm not a big hip hop fan, but I respect Kanye for not singing about how rich and cool he is. I'm not too thrilled on his opinion of college though.
seriously. he's not the most famous guy out there but for people who listen to music it seems amazing to have not heard of west. i had heard of him before i had heard anything he sang. he had some video on mtv where he recorded the song with his jaw still wired shut b/c of some accident. and "jesus walks" is a cool song. I loath the "music" of Nelly, Usher, and other huge selling artists of their ilk you dislike music just b/c lots of other people do like it?
I don't like Nelly and Usher because they suck. Not to mention Usher has become a diva lately. Did you guys hear about how he had the red carpet at some GQ banquet cleared so that he could have it all to himself?
It's not his real opinion of college. It was made in jest. I'm paraphrasing, but he said something like this: I have four albums. They're called College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and, what you get after all that, a good-ass job.
Hmm, I don't know anything about the CNN interview, but I'm pretty sure the album was made to highlight the anxiety he felt about finishing college, not his opinion of college. Either way, for him, college really wasn't that important. He's clearly an intelligent, educated person, and he is successful. College would have just delayed his success ala Michael Dell and Bill Gates. That said, I doubt he means to encourage students from shunning college, just because he did alright without it.
I would agree with this, the album IMHO was simply mocking the fact that today in school, so often students are made to think that without college your goals and ambitions have no meaning. The feeling that college is made to feel like the only path that can lead to a six figure salary and a sense of acceptence in higher society. I feel that Kanye is at fault though when he fails to realize how easily his message can be mistaken and cause the youth to get a sense that college is not needed at all and he uses his self as an example as to why. I think that the situation is similar to when Clarret was temporarily granted acceptence into the NFL darft. Shortly after that numerous HS kids who might have felt that they could make it into to the NFL with little to no experience registered for the draft because of Clarett. The fact is that there is a reason why Kanye made it to where he is today, and to give kids, in a sense, a false hope that they'll all be that one in a million person who does not need an education to be successful, is where he is at fault.
Kanye's album is great. "The Workout Plan" is one of the best songs ever.... The video is great and loved it before it became a single. Glad to see John Mayer getting a nod for "Daughters", very great song and Maroon 5 SHOULD win best new artist...
I think his message through out the album also was staying college forever and getting those degrees does not guarantee success. Some of skits from his album: Now beat that And your mothers sayin “go to college” So u finish college and its wonderful U feel so good And after all the partying and crazing And don’t forget about that drug habit u picked up at school bein around your peers Hey now you’ll get that 25 thou, job a year and You’ll spend all your money on crack cocaine, but it’ll be you’re your money No more borrowin money from mom for my high So now you get ur degree tattooed on your back your so excited about it If u continue to work at the GAP, after several interviews, Oh my god! You’ll come in at an entry level position and when u do that If u kiss enough ass, you’ll move up to the next level Which is being a secretary’s secretary! And boy is that great, you get to take messages for the secretary Who never went to college Shes actually the bosses niece, so now your apart of the family You know what college does for you? It makes you really smart man All you kids want to talk in the back of the class not me, I listened, ok I was a hall monitor, This was meant to be, You know how many classes I took, extra classes extra classes No I’ve never had sex but you know what, my degree keeps me satisfied When a lady walks to me says “hey u know whats sexy?” I say “no, I don’t know what it is, but I bet I can add up all the change in your purse very fast”. You keep it going man, you keep those books rolling, You pick up those books your going to read And not remember and you roll man. You get that a sociate degree, okay, Then you get your bachelors, then you get your masters Then you get your master's masters, Then you get your doctron, You go man, then when everybody says quit You show them those degree man, when Everybody says hey, your not working, Your not making in money, You say look at my degrees and you look at my life, Yeah i'm 52, so what, hate all you want, But i'm smart, i'm so smart, and i'm in school, And these guys are out here making Money all these ways, and i'm spended mine to be smart. You know why? Because when i die, buddy, you know What going to keep me warm, that right, those degrees [Man) Hey Jimmy where you going? [Jimmy] I dont know where I'm goin. My Dad died, and he left me his degrees. My mom would always say "Dad, why dont you work?", But he just kept learning. All the other kids parents were working and saving up money for school, And I was actaully in school all when my dad was in school. He was so gready with degrees, he took my degree. And now I'm just glad he left me these. Because all the regular homeless people have newspaper, and look what I have. These are documented. My father left them for me. And Im going to leave them to my kids. I'm going to learn too. I'm going to get super smart, so I to can die without money. But I'll be the smartest dead guy. Who has that.
It's like you read my mind. West has a lot of talent as a producer, and is interesting as a rapper, though "College Dropout" is kind of hit or miss for me right now...
kanye west's album is great....the best rap album in a long time. lyrics are profound and great beats.
Kanye West is my lone link to rap fandom right now. I never much cared for it outside of some Eminem and some old school MC Hammer (which many wouldn't even consider rap these days). His album is outstanding, and I still am not tired of listening to it. Question for those that have the album. What is with all the weird skipping in the School Spirit song?
this guy has probably had more award nominations than any other artist this year, but I haven't seen him win a single award yet. if he gets shut out at the grammys, he might blow a gasket. he's been pissed after previous award shows this year...
