Wait a minute... Weren't you the poster that was getting upset about prank emails to a Christian TV show but you are OK with a joke about the Haiti earthquake?
Actually countries like Australia, Japan and the PRC played a huge role during the tsunami. Even India which was hit by the tsunami gave aid to other countries. The US though being the only military and economic superpower is expected to play a big role in a major disaster. If we expect to play the lead role on the international stage we are expected to do so not just in terms of national security or economic interests. Anyway I can tell you first hand that US aid to tsunami victims indirectly helped with national security by showing many Muslims in SE Asia that we are compassionate people. The sight of US military helicopters bringing aid to Aceh probably did more strike at the roots of Islamic terrorism than the whole war on terrorism. On a related note the PRC was one of the first countries to give aid to Haiti even though Haiti is as distant from Beijing as Sri Lanka is to DC. Not exactly. The area most devestated by the tsunami, Aceh, was a war torn area with no tourism industry. Parts of Sri Lanka that the tsunami hit were also war torn. The tsunami also hit parts of India that were desperately poor too along with where the tsunami hit Somalia. Again it depends where. There was no problem getting aid to the coast of Thailand and Sri Lanka but Aceh was practically inaccessible except from the air. Considering that half of the deaths were in Indonesia the situation was as bad as Haiti is given the differences in population. If your point is that the tsunami wasn't as bad as Haiti I don't think that is the case. The problem with the tsunami was that it was so large and that initially the worst affected area had less coverage than other places like Thailand and Sri Lanka, not too forget that few westerners died in Aceh whereas thousands died in the resort areas. If your point is that people didn't care as much about the tsunami I don't think that is the case. There was an unprecedented outpouring of support for the tsunami and I think it is comparable. I will agree that text messaging has made it easier to give aid which might skew the numbers in terms of amount of aid but I'm not sensing there is more concern for Haiti than the tsunami or Katrina.
Neither of those did I mean or even imply. I was primarily talking about logistics and proximity of the two disaster zones and how that would affect our aid efforts. I still don't think it should be on us to be the lead role in any disaster around the world if other nations are closer by. Even a downsized effort on our part is likely better than what many other nations can or will offer.
That's the problem though a lot of countries don't have the capability to take the lead. Like it or not we are a superpower and fair or not there are expectations on us.
I found humor coming from this comment. Or Danny Bonaduce turning to the topic into talking about his bad cocaine habit growing up in Hollywood.
Man what is up with the music? They couldn't get some authentic African music or something similar to the culture of Haiti?? Did Wyclef perform yet?
Yes. Yes he was. Maybe Salvy's lack of tolerance for jokes at others expense doesn't extend to those buried under rubble who are desperate for food, water and medical attention.
Finally got through, donated some money, hopefully a bunch of pople did too. Lines were busy all night, I didnt talk to a celebrity, or I at least assume he wasnt one haha...i didnt ask if he was? that would be just wierd....
You mean authentic Haitian or Carib music? Wyclef I think performed a dancehall or soca tune when he was on stage..
