well said and deserves to be quoted again. though you really should have posted it along with this link... an ima classic... edit... i did post a "kayne overrated" thread several months ago, but it wasn't a diss on his talent. more of a "i've seen this act before and don't think it's all that innovative, but he's alright".
You like rap about social issues and concerns or light-hearted stuff but do not like Kanye West? You said yourself you can't remember one song by him. How would you know you don't like him? Its like my kids that say they don't like dinner even though they haven't taken a bite. I've never heard of 99% of the music you talk about but I'm not narrow minded enough to say I wouldn't like it. I guess I expected more from a music snob like yourself. Go get College Dropout and tell me that isn't a good CD.
Is it OK to say Bizzare Ride II the Pharcyde is my favorite rap CD of all-time? If not, well, your momma's got wooden legs with real feet.
I was merely stating the type of rap music I like. I should have clarified and said that it isn't a genre I find myself constantly wanting to go out and buy CDs of. Once again, I don't think I said I wouldn't like it - I just said that I felt I wasn't missing anything. I mean the music to me is meh. If one of his songs came on my TV or on the radio, I wouldn't kill myself like I would with a Linkin Park or Nickelback song. And you have never heard of classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen or solo artists like Bob Dylan and David Bowie? I'll pass and take your word for it, MB, especially considering I need to save that money for more Neil Young and Bob Dylan CDs.
i guess that makes me a rap snob. i'm not saying that none of it is any good. i'm saying i FAR FAR FAR prefer the older stuff...particularly Tribe. just my taste.
Hey I think 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin was one of the best albums of the last 10 years in rap. When i say bubblegum rap I'm talking about bull**** that doesn't appeal to me at all, Nick Cannon, Bow wow, and trash like that. I would much rather listen to something lyrically superior like Hiero, MF Doom, Jedi Mind tricks or something of that nature.
Hey, you know who I like? Devin the Dude. And I'll continue pimping him in every rap thread until people start checking him out.
kanye west is no different than any other celebrity who thinks his opinion matters. im not a big fan of his rapping because his rhymes are elementary, but the guy has major talent when it comes to producing music. the song "drive slow" that he did with paul wall single-handedly made me into a paul wall fan. he also helped launch artists like john legend, jamie foxx, common, etc etc. he samples alot in his songs, but his tracks always have a very unique sound to them, which is very refreshing with the current state of mainstream hip hop.
the best lyricist who never really made it big is canibus. go download "get r****ded" or "aids is gold, hiv is platinum" and be enlightened
[snark]Wow...how startling! A bunch of older white guys don't like a current pop star not named Dave Matthews?! I didn't think that was possible![/snark] Kanye makes catchy music that has more going on lyrically than all of you hip hop afficianados are giving him credit for. He makes good pop music, nothing more, nothing less. He's not a genius, but completely dismissing him because he didn't blow your doors off in a Barbara Walters interview is r****ded. He should be getting roasted for appearing with Barbara Walters (that's the death of anybody cool) and buying into that pop star Messiah BS. I got three words for you, Kanye- Terrence Trent D'Arby!
It comes with the territory...greatness is alway followed by haters..no matter who you are! Yes, even the current god we all know as Vince Young has his haters. It's life. Hate Kanye all you want, but he is still a solid entertainer, rapper, producer, lyricist. Music is like art, just as art is subjective to the observer, music is subjective to the listener. You may love country music, personally I can't stand it and would go crazy having to listen to it. Everyone is different.
