Pole, so Schwartz does smoked meat sandwiches? Does it taste like corned beef or more like brisket? No. It's kosher style. Not even the Katz in NY (When Harry Met Sally) is kosher. It's just too expensive to run a true kosher place.
It tastes more like corned beef. The sandwiches aren't those huge NY deli things with three weeks worth of deli meat on them. They are more sensibly sized, but the flavor puts everything else to shame. I crave them, but it will probably be a while before I get back up there. http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/index_eng.html
Have you tried the French Riviera Bakery & Cafe on Chimney Rock? I've seen this place lots of times for years but I'm never around there when I'm looking to eat something nor would I drive that far for a sandwich. There was a good review in the Houston Press and now I'm trying to plan accordingly. http://houstonpress.com/2008-06-12/restaurants/madagascar-birthmarks-at-french-riviera-bakery/
What kind of meat is that? Is that pate? I second Katz's being great. It is another place that is about $1.50 overpriced. But I love the music played there.
Blasphemy. That pathetic excuse for a deli Kenny and Ziggy's couldn't dream of coming close to alfreds. 13 dollar sandwiches and shallow bowls of matzo ball soup for 7 bucks. LOL.
I don't get why anyone eats at Kenny & Ziggy's. Yeah they make good sandwiches, but for $12 for a turkey sandwich. Umm...no thanks. It's not that good.
Katz's is barely better than Subway and has some of the worst matzo ball soup I've ever had. Their bread isn't very good and they don't know how to properly slice corned beef. There is a deli in N. Austin that is pretty good, but overpriced. It's called Manny Hatten's. It was something like $40 for just my wife and I.
Guys its all about Jimmy Johns. That place is great. Sometimes I go to Kroger and have them make me a corned beef sandwich and they use boars head meat which is really good. The meat at subway could be better but you cant beat $5 for a footlong. Quiznos sucks and they have a similar deal to subway but it still sucks. Jersey Mikes isnt that good either. I like Katz but its kinda expensive. The Nestle Toll House sandwich shop is not that good either. Also kinda expensive. Has anyone ever eaten at Earl of Sandwich?
What do you think Alfred's would charge nowadays if it were still around? Thanks for playing, rookie!
Because it's the best Jewish deli in town...if you want turkey on white bread with mayo, go to Nielsens, LOL!
Kahn's is awesome! Best reuben I've had. I like it more than Kenny and Ziggy's b/c they slice the corned beef thinner. I also put it slightly on top of Katz's b/c I was ripped off there once when they were running low on corned beef and my sandwich was probably half the size of what it should've been. Katz's does make a dang good cheesecake shake though.
Kahn's is awesome, been there on each visit to H-Town, they had better not change it, the Rueben combo is awesome.......... Behad and I did the regular size once, not sure we ate for a day after.... fricken awesome rueben, want one right now, will get back for another, one day.......
