Yeah, the ability to adjust to his personel and change his system based upon their strengths...ala Clyde in Portland and Webber in Sacremento.

We are lucky to have Adelman.....he is a very good coach, and this year, will be a championship coach if the Rockets stay healthy.

No coach in this franchise has been able to accomplish more with less than Jeff Van Gundy. It's a shame he was on the way out as the Moreyball started. At least we finally destroyed the root of the problem with Moreyball initialized. Sadly, it was too late for Sir Van Gundy. But we hired another fine coach who is now reaping the benefits. Now we just need to get healthy!

I think that there should be a thread with a sticky titled "JVG" or "Jeff Van Gundy" kept on this forum for as long as he continues to be an analyst with ESPN because anytime he ever goes to talk about the Rockets in interviews or whenever he's on at Rocket games that are being televised on ESPN or ABC, we'll continue to see new threads started concerning him. I feel that doing such a thing would not be necessary if he never coached the Rockets at all.

For once I agree with you...I always feel like a genius when I come across you on the board :D

for a better analogy, I would look like a handsome mofo if I stood beside William Hung.

JVG seems to enjoy not having all the weight of coaching on his head. Why not ask him to be a sort of freelance "defensive coordinator" for the Rockets? He could have fewer responsiblities than if he were head coach, still collect a nice check, but still have free time. He could come in like three times/week and work with the team or something...Just a thought.

JVG is good at squeezing out the best from mediocre players. That's why he is a good coach -- for a team full of not very talented but hard working players.

But he is not as good at shaping great talents into a great team. Choosing between an overachieving average player and an underachieving high talent player, he would always take the former. I believe that is the main reason why JVG's teams are always good but seldom great.

i figured out dada...talk like you know something and people with even less knowledge will agree...so jvg kept bowen over kelenna...show me the proof where he said it, or cd said it was his decision. could it have been a money issue where bowen was guaranteed? see your blatant dislike and lack of objectivity covers up your real weakness which is a lack of clarity about the facts...but go crazy with your mcainisms and just spew venom...unfortunately its been proven to work...long live the rockets, but i hope the negativity dies a sudden death here on this board

no you haven't, no more than you've figured out Bill O'Reilly. What you did in this thread was equivalent to telling O'Reilly to shut up. You'll be closer to figuring him out when you stop turning on Fox News, metaphorically speaking.

by the way, just for the record, defense is always underrated by people who don't really understand both sides of the ball. Adelman's whole offense is based on being able to watch what the defense is doing. If you watch the Rockets by watching the ball or the cutting of our players, you will never fully understand Adelman's offense. You have to watch the defense, peripherally watching the offense.

You know why? Because defensive geniuses like JVG are copied by other coaches...the book is out...so unless you can teach your players to hone in on the very subtle mistakes in an well-coached NBA man on man defense sometimes makes...your motion offense is going to get destroyed.

Defense wins in this league...still. That's why you have to get a Big 3 of just sheer offensive talent to win. And even then, the Spurs have set the bar on the high level of defense it takes to go with your Big 3. Boston matchd it. And Adelman is no fool, he knows the best his offense can be won't get you to the Finals without defense...lucky for him Morey landed Artest (the Chuck Norris of defense), so now he can concentrate fully on teaching the team to see and understand the opposing defense and find their subtle mistakes, rather than spending time in preseason making sure we know how to play defense...notice Adelman said he's not spending time on defense...cause he doesn't have to.

I guarantee you Adelman watches the game by watching the defense, like every successful coach. And it's obvious Bill O'Reilly doesn't....he just gets offensive. haha,,,,metaphorically speaking.

There aren't too many coaches who have taught the NBA something...JVG is one of them.

As for Rudy, v3.0...man, you need to listen to TheFreak and tinman more...be reasonable like Easy is. The genius of Rudy is his ability to get players to reach their inner best. That is also the genius of Phil Jackson. That's less Xs and Os as it his mentoring. PJax's approach is to give them challenges that aren't patronizing. Rudy's approach is essentially to teach them how to be a man...THE MAN.

    i'm done. that was fun.

    departing quote of the day:

"<i>Coming out of high school and playing one year at Syracuse playing zone, he [Donte Greene] has no real concept of playing defense, ever,” Kings coach Reggie Theus said. “This is the first time he’s ever really been taught man-to-man principles. He’s got a long way to go defensively.</i>" much like Bill O'Reilly.

Hate Bill O'Reilly all you want, but you gotta love the man. I'd want him taking Clyde's seat.

BTW, aren't O'Reilly and Obama supposed to go one-on-one Election Day?

Yeah, JVG taught the NBA that he learned Pat Riley's defensive schemes very well.

Defense is only half of the equation......and I would expect you to know that.

I give Mrs JVG (dennisCD) a pass because he clearly is in love....but for those of us that can see the truth.

JVG was only half a good coach......his deficiencies in lack of adjustments, and his piss poor decisions of personel held the team back.....

Funny how people rave about him, and can't see his flaws....I am just not one to sit on the sidelines and listen to the made up hogwash about him being so succesful....because he wasn't...if he was he would still be here, or even back in the league.

JVG Failed, was fired for it....

I am not surprised to see you in a thread trying to get in a few shots on DD though HP, you follow me around like a lost puppy.

Come here little puppy, let me give you a little scratch behind your ears.

I'm not even the biggest JVG fan and saying he was only a good coach on one side of the ball is true but how many coaches are there in the league that even do that. Most are mediocre on both sides.

Dantoni gets praised and he's the same as JVG but on the other side of the ball. You need both defense and offense to win but i think Larry Brown proved in 2004 that defense can be considered more important. While you're offense can break down and you can have an "off" night, defense is the only constant.

I agree with this, defense is all about effort and smarts, and that is the one thing that is the most controllable each and every game.

However, if you fill your team with a bunch of Ryan Bowens you are not going to win the game.

You need both the ability to score the ball and defend the goal to win......

JVG had the team playing amazing defense, but their offense was too predicatble and stale and the personel choices were for defensive reasons......

For some reason people have elevated a coach that failed for 4 years to get out of the first round as some kind of uber coach......that is the crux of it for me.....JVG failed.....and no amount of looking back through balding glasses is going to change that fact.

I love JVG as an announcer and in an interview....hate him as a Rocket's coach......but just to be consistent, I can not stand Larry Brown either.

    just a child.

    so sensitive.

knows he watches the game by watching the ball and the cutting.

so sensitive when someone points out that the true genuises of the league like Adelman watch the defense. the child clearly does not grasp that.

    so, it's like...what? The Hills....Gossip Girls...BFF for Paris. "<i>you're just following me around.</i>"

    what?

    I'm so sensitive.

back out DD. you are in over your head with me.

    HP...poor baby.....

You so want a hug.....you fail at posting as bad as JVG failed in the playoffs for the Rockets, two posts of the same thing within 5 minutes...how sad.

And, your assumption that you understand what Adelman is doing while no one else can....is laughable.....I am sure he consults with the man in the pink hat when he needs some advice.

    I know I sure would.....uh....NOT !
