"One of the things I really do believe is -- and it would've affected our two guys this year, so it wouldn't have been good -- I don't believe anybody on sub-.500 teams should be in the All-Star Game," Van Gundy said. "It should be all a reward for winning. Now that would affect our guys which, I'm glad no one took my advice for this year." out of context
The issue with JVG is that the guy just needs to chill out on all of the negative comments. It doesnt matter and never has mattered what he thinks about who should be there. I dont see any other coaches talking about how they think their players dont deserve it because of the teams record. I mean, its the all star break... a micro vacation for whoever isnt participating, he can at least just stop it with the negativity and calm the heck down.
If I were yao, I would refuse to go to all star game due to so many garbage talking. Even east side guards From DC complained Yao gets start, He does not get it. How funny it is. Does Yao votes affect a guard from east side? These reporters and players can make money only in USA.
We all know T-Mac and Yao are all-stars and deserve to start. What I don't get is this whole BS that the All-Star game is for the fans. How is it for the fans when the average fan (the real fans) can't afford to buy tickets. Sorry, I cannot afford to pay between $500-1000 for tickets.
/\/\ /\/\ /\/\ /\/\ /\/\ I have TNT. The All-star game is in Houston for the first time in like 30 years and probably won't be back for another15+ or so. The average fan in Houston who supports the Rox and loves the NBA should have the opportunity to go to the game and watch it LIVE! It shouldn't just be for celebraties, hootchie moma groupies who want to become another NBA players' baby mama, rappers who wanna bring their bling and party, and corporate stiffs who could care less about the game and just wanna be seen with the "stars". The Toyota center has enough of unenthusiastic fans as it is, it doesn't need it during the all-star game also.
I think him saying that is no big deal. He's just trying to be humble in the face of the way this season has gone compared to expectations, and I think the players get that. No big whoop.
It's for the fans because they choose the players in the game. It's not for the fans in the city where the game is held, it's for fans worldwide who choose to vote on the starters.
Yeah and he (JVG) shouldn't be allowed to coach any team. His comments won't shake the world, but it won't make his job easier if he pisses off the two players holding his office keys in the first place.
I hate to break the horrible new to you guys but believe it or not..........The allstar game is a way for the nba to make money and advertise, thats all!!!! It is just a f*ckin show. Why do people try to make this into something it isnt. The allstar game is all about the fans, nothing more. Nothing is at stake. Look at the allstar weekend, bunch of games that seem like they would be interesting for people to see. It is a freakin offensive show.
This is why I thought it was brilliant for MLB to make the All-Star game meaningful. People tune in to the NBA all-star game because they still want to see basketball during the break and some of the activities are somewhat entertaining. The NFL's version is after the season and meaningless, so no one care about it, it is the worst all star game, and that is otherwise the best run league. Put something on the line at the all-star game and it will be competitive and 100x more compelling.
Yeah, he ticked off Tracy and Yao so much they decided to (choose one): 1 Quit on him 2 Destroy the Sonics tonight. If he keeps up these "negative" comments we might go on a win streak. According to Matt Jackson on AM610, JVG was seen smiling after the game. Somebody go slap the guy to make sure that doesn't happen again. He should know better. You want more scandal, check these postgame comments from Van Grumpy: "It starts always with our two best guys and their energy level," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "McGrady obviously was very efficient tonight. Yao is a long way away from being in the type of shape he was in prior to his injury. But that he is in as good of shape as he is in is a direct result of his incredible dedication." ________ Van Gundy ranked Friday's performance as the Rockets' best at home all season. "It's our first home game that I can say we played well from start to finish," he said. "Hopefully, that's the start of something." ________ Yao, meanwhile, missed seven of his first 10 shots, but finished strong, hitting all five of his attempts in the final quarter. Yao underwent surgery on Dec. 19 to remove an infection from his left big toe and is apparently still not fully healed. After the game, he dunked his left foot in a bucket of ice, pulled it out and winced as he pulled on a sock. "He's got a level of dedication to his profession that very few have," Van Gundy said.
Whenever I start to wonder whether Jeff Van Gundy isn't the right guy to coach this team, he says something like this, and I'm right back with him. The guy is just hard-core merit and work ethic.
thank you for being the voice of reason. you guys are making a big deal out of what JVG said and it's a complete non-issue. outside of this msg board it's not even on the radar.
Should Van Gundy be fired? Nah, that is too dracistic. However, how would this conversation be veiwed if lets say, T-Mac said, "Well, I dont think Van Gundy should coach the All-star team, He is a good coach, but they should only let winners coach it." He would be fined; "Actions detrimental to the team." Gundy is a little man, and he is always trying to show the world that he is a "hard liner". personally I think they should fine his little butt, and he would think twice before opening his big mouth. Keep it in the locker room, if you want to fire up Yao and T-mac put it on the Chalk board " you arent All-stars just because you play in the game .
Jeff would say, "No kidding, it is the coach with the best record in the conference (as of Feb 5) who coaches the all-star team. You're damn right I don't deserve to coach it this year, now get back to work or I'll bench you for Ryan Bowen."
