lmao, people get all worked up on the stupidest ****. yao and t-mac probably feel their less deserving all-stars then jvg does. honestly they definitely don't deserve to be there if you look at games played and our record, but i'm definitely glad they are and voted for them multiple times.
It's 50/50...yes, winning teams should be awarded but at the same, there's a reason why fans vote in the first place...its who THEY want to see...the coaches also have their picks as well so I think it works out for everybody...its only natural that a few players would be at home disappointed...
The voting rule is set by NBA(David Stern) not you JVG. Like it or not,you have to accept it's for the most popular players not the best players. It's really surprised to hear such words from Rockets coach. Is he just stubborn or maybe stupid?
I have no problem with what he said. JVG has gone on record saying that all the teams have talent. He has said that he expects the guys that are playing to win, even if some of our guys are injured. JVG feels that there are a lot of very good players in the NBA, way more than enough to make 2 all-star squads. Giiven that, there is no reason not to select the all-stars that have produced for winning teams. Would a Nash, Bryant, Brand, Duncan, Camby team really be that horrible to watch? Wouldn't it be nice if some of the very good but less popular players (like Brand) got some exposure? Sure we want to support Yao and Tracy, because they are our guys, and Van Gundy supported them as well, but when it was some other team and some other players, more people agreed with him. I thought it was dumb when people kept voting players that didn't even play all season as a starter, but that is who the fans wanted to see. If Sura had been voted on, I would be happy for our guy, but I would still think he was undeserving.
If the All-Star game was all about rewarding performance, I would agree Tracy and Yao should not play. But the ASG is about fan popularity, not performance. With the game being in Houston, I'm glad our two stars will participate. Some of you guys need to chill. This is the full paragraph. Why get so excited about it? "One of the things I really do believe is -- and it would've affected our two guys this year, so it wouldn't have been good -- I don't believe anybody on sub-.500 teams should be in the All-Star Game," Van Gundy said. "It should be all a reward for winning. Now that would affect our guys which, I'm glad no one took my advice for this year." Someone logically explain why this makes them mad at JVG. Otherwise, just admit the misleading thread title threw you off. To get worked up over these three sentences is just crazy, IMO. If my emotions about the Rockets were such a delicate tripwire, I'd force myself to step back, take a break and re-evaluate. I love the Rockets but not to the point of going off the deep end.
Did you read the entire thing?? The truth is that JVG stood by what he had said back when he was a broadcaster but said he was glad not one listened to him because Yao and T-mac both made the team this year.
For the record, iirc BOTH TMac and Yao led in all-star balloting BEFORE they got hurt. But nice job at taking a cheap pot shot at our players. This whole thread sucks. 1 star.
i think he's wrong. the playoffs are a reward for winning. the all-star game is a reward for doing well, even if your team isn't. just like the rookie game is a reward for being the best of your class if your not yet the best in the league. -and the dunk and 3pt contests are rewards for guys who may not be great all around players but are excellent in one area. how boring would the all-star weekend be if you only allowed players from the top half of the standings to participate?
I agree the all-star game is a great marketing tool for the NBA. It is an opportunity for fans to see their favorite players augmented by the coaches favorite players. A all-star starting lineup with players like Jason Terry, Rip Hamilton, Tony Parker, and Elton Brand is not that appealing.
With Yao and TMac both playing, the team has played: Sacramento - W New Jersey - W Boston - L Minnesota - W San Antonio - L Detroit - L Atlanta - W Memphis - L Boston - W Sacramento - W Portland - W Golden State - W Seattle - W Clippers - L Memphis - L Milwaukee - W That's 10-6, and that's with each coming into and out of injuries, and the rest of the team injured as well. A .625 winning percentage. Good enough for 5th in the West. I'm not optimistic about this season. We dug ourselves too big a hole already, I think. But I am optimistic about the team, if healthy. It would be great to add another young, athletic role player who won't break down, sure, but T-Mac/Yao shouldn't be penalized because the team sucked while they weren't even playing. Of course, you can argue they don't deserve to make it because they were injured. I'm fine with that...but injured players have been making the all-star game for years.
The NBA makes money off of its fans. If the fans want to see T-Mac and Yao in the game, then they should start. However, I think JVG is right as far as reserves go.
Yes,I did. Bottom line is those kind of words shouldnt come from Rockets coach's mouth. Concentrate on your coach job and you dont need to comment on everything.
