JVG would still trade Battier for today's version of Gay

really love JVG. he is 100% right about Battier. switch Gay and Battier today and Memphis wins more games than they have and Houston looses more games. And really love his compliments for Adelman. class act.

Exactly. Battier compliments this team so well. I'd take Battier 100 times before I'd even consider Gay. When people say they want Gay or regret the trade (like we were even going to draft him anyway) I wonder if people realize that basketball is 5 on 5. It is not some game of 1 on 1 with 5 different matchups! Gay would suck for this team.

I got one question. Is anyone of us as knowledgable as JVG?

If you listen to the interview he makes perfect sense. Gay would be a chink in the defensive armor. Your defense is as good as your weakest link.

The Rockets offense runs through Yao and Tmac so Gay's role would be reduced to a jumpshooter. He doesn't have the experience, the knowledge, the desire or the ability to guard quick perimeter players. He gets torched every night.

I feel like Shane is so underrated even on this board. We've become stat hawks so much so that we fail to recognize winning plays and attitude. Shane is the lynchpin of the Rockets. He is Bobby Sura and Mario Elie combined.

He seems to be under-rated by the loud minority that consistently parrot back whatever ESPN or TNT tells them.

There is only a couple of guys I consider knowledgable here that still dont like it....most of the people Ive had opportunity to discuss it with personally love it.

I think that is because your average non-internet-fantasy-basketball-espn-highlight fans dont have any clue as to who Gay is, they didnt follow him in college or drool over getting him on draft night. They know when they watch Battier play that he never stops working hard and always makes good plays......and thats all that matters to them. They know that when he plays good, we win.

    Dak,

god knows I give you a hard time sometimes, but on this we are in total agreement. ;)

Let's pose an even better question!!!

Would San Antonio have traded Bruce Bowen for the draft pick to Rudy Gay? :D

P.S. Those who answer yes are seriously delusional :D

San Antonio's got a serious problem because they're mortgaging their future for the present. Eventually all their good players will break down and they'll have to rebuild, and Gay is a pretty darn good prospect to start with. Bruce Bowen, as good as he is, is replaceable.

If you were talking about this year, I don't think they'd hesitate to trade bowen for gay. draft night? I think they would at least be sorely tempted.

On the other hand, they also might not, knowing that Gay would be trying to showcase himself at the expense of the team.

I definitely don't think they do the trade on draft night.

Battier is almost my favorite on this team... but if B-Jax holds onto the pace he started with... my, oh, my I may have a new man crush.

Of course I like T-Mac and Yao... but you know what I mean. ;)

    This whole team is good.

I haven't seen enough of Rudy Gay to make a judgment about the trade. The guy obviously can score, but beyond that, I don't know.

But whatever Gay comparisons you want to make, you've got to love what Battier has brought to this team day in and day out. And now that he's getting more aggressive offensively, there's little more you can ask of the guy.

And I think there's another thread on this, but man, what a great interview. JVG is makes some really good points, especially about the change in defense and offense under Adelman.

VG's comment and this thread...humourous and predictable.

When the Rockets are beating up on sub .500 teams and a Hornets team that just lost to the Wizards...Battier again walks on water.

How about getting out of the first round before declaring Battier the better choice?

I personally don't think Gay would get us out of the first round. If we had him in his current for now. Its just another defensive area where they can abuse like they did to Yao last year.

How about putting getting out of the first round on T-Mac and Yao, rather than a role player?

Battier has a much better all around game than Bowen, so I disagree with your analogy, even though I must admit that Battier and Bowen play similar roles for their respective teams.

Of course the Rockets also have beaten THIS YEAR.

    Phoenix IN Phoenix
    San Antonio TWICE
    Golden State
    Utah in Utah
    The Lakers in Los Angeles.

I am sorry Gater, Battier is a very important piece.....I know you want someone with athleticism and length, but his attention to detail on the defensive side, and his ability to stretch the defense by hitting the 3 is extremely valuable.

I think Feigen from the Chronicle said it best. A teamful of Battiers isn't going to beat anybody. A team without a Battier is never going to contend. How many times have you seen Battier hustle back and block a shot, draw a charge, etc.? He's a complete professional and the contributions he makes to the team as a whole are invaluable.

It is annoying, how many people only look at a players athletic abilities, or highlites, and don't consider how he fits into the team situation.

It is like this boards obsession with Mike Miller.....he is a good player, but where would he play on the Rockets? Who do you sit?

Battier = worse on D if he sits
Tmac - LOL give me a break

Miller would be a backup on this team...why pay him all that money to have him backup someone.

The only position this team needs is a true quality PG.....

with 2 #1 pick, 1 #2 pick, 1 #3, and 1 #7 as nene, 2 scorers off bench who can score 40+, and Mexico #1 player, and a coach reach to final and scuccess in different teams, Nugget underachived a lots. They expected a 60+win season (75%), not 60%.

They are a PERFECT example of how overated individual talent is......

You need a good mix of chemistry and clearly defined roles....for a TEAM to win.

Rudy Gay is a good individual talent....Shane Battier makes your TEAM better.

in game 5 and 7, battier got 15/17 points, way above his average. Rafer also played his regular level in the series. It was the bench, specially head and Yao ming who's not fully healthy caused rockets the series.
