Right.....chief, let's take a look at this assessment of yours - I hate to break it to you , but china doll Yao and T-Back were breaking down way before 2007. Van Gundy 2006-2007 Rockets 52-30 (Lost to Utah in 7) Offensive Rating: 106.0 (15th of 30) ▪ Defensive Rating: 100.7 (3rd of 30) Yao & T-mac play 4,163 minutes, missed a combined 44 games Adelman (a "great team" "without Yao or TMAC") 2007-2008 Rockets: 55-27 (Lost to Utah in 6) Offensive Rating: 106.8 (17th of 30) ▪ Defensive Rating: 101.6 (2nd of 30) Yao TMac played 4,484 minutes, missed a combined 42 games So, other than being completely and absolutely wrong on all counts, is there anything you wish to add to the discussion? Again, I noted it above, but the fact that Adelman was able to add Landry & Scola and not improve the teams offensive efficiency is probably the most
The Landry-Scola combo wasn't as good at the beginning as it was later. IIRC, the offense didn't click until Scola became the starter more than halfway through that season. As I said in the JVG-SVG thread, the biggest difference between JVG and Adelman is that Adelman can play offense without McGrady, and JVG could not. But then we'll never know how JVG could have done with Morey as the GM.
Right, in part because he has Martin, Scola, Landry, Brooks etc to create on offense. On the flipside of this Van Gundy showed could play defense without Yao, in part since he had Mutombo etc (and of course Kelvin Cato and the immortal Torraye Braggs).
thats just a bad comparison because you are assuming all other variable were the same. They were much, much different Good point about the supporting cast. I'm not sure the 05-07 rockets would have won more than 10 games without yao and tmac. Also, great point about the bolded. While you obviously need a competent coach, a play wont be made if the player doesnt have the talent. I think RA and JVG are both fantastic coaches capable of winning a championship. My personal opinion is to lean towards JVG...because he's awesome and loved his interviews
You just proved my point. JVG went 52-30 in 06-07. Adelman went 53-29 in 08-09. So you're telling me that with a much better roster Adelman only managed to win 1 more game than JVG with a weak roster? That should be a miserable failure in your book.
Don't know how to edit my post so i'll reply to myself. I posted the wrong season. I meant to say the 07-08 season where Adelman went 55-27. He won 3 more games than JVG that year. I give RA props for the 08-09 season. He took care of his business in the playoffs without T-mac.
You must be kidding. What kind of TMAC was that in 08-09? He was hurting the team by playing in and out. in 06-07, TMAC was a 25/6/5 player.
i will go with jvg. ra took advantage by inheriting a group of key players who were very well trained by jvg on defense. as years passed, rox defense is starting to lose its identity under ra's control. ra's offense is not significant better as many posters are thinking (see some responses from fans). adding the case jvg didn't have the bench that ra is enjoying right now, it's tough to say jvg would have not been able to go deeper if he had been given with the 2008-2009 bench.
No doubt Adelman has better players to work with; HOWEVER, in was JVG's decision to give Charlie Ward a three year deal and bring in all the other "Ole Knicks," Rod Strickland et. al., unforgivable. Adelman's substitution patterns and to some degree his rotations are questionable; however JVG was ridiculously stubborn about everything. He seemed to hate rookies and appeared to play favorites, the famous JVG doghouse. All things considered, I think the Rockets currently have the better coach. Admittedly, I liked the lock down defense of the JVG era, but the offense was sometimes hard to watch. The 2005 Rockets were JVG's best team. If Yao comes back (all the way and stays healthy), this year's Rockets will be Adelman's best team.
3 more games better. 22 win streak. Developed rookies. Adelman did it with most JVG players on a completely new team, new system with Yao out for 2 months. RA still gets my props.
Martin only played 24 games as a Rockets. Brooks didn't become a starter until more than halfway through the 08-09 season, the same season when McGrady played only 35 games. Scola is hardly a "creator" of offense. Landry couldn't create his own shots until the beginning of last season. The 08-09 season was a clear indicator of Adelman's offensive coaching when TMac was in and out of the lineup (disrupting the chemistry in the process), and the only players who could create were Alston (and later Brooks and Lowry). Yao, Landry and Scola were finishers rather than play makers. He still managed to mold an offense that was a tad above average.
Which rookies did JVG fail to play, again? I wasn't sure if you guys were referring to John Lucas, Mike Wilks, Torraye Braggs or the immortal V-Span.. Oh, was it Andre Barrett? Man, what a blunder, keeping him on the bench.
I also think you are way off on your "creator" argument. When Scola has the ball in the low post or high post, he is a creator. He has some of the best low post moves in the game. Yao is a creator on the block...you give him the ball and he creates a good shot or dishes out of a double. Lowry is a creator...he probes defenses and puts pressure on them to adjust. if you prefer RA then fine. No big deal. But if you insist on making certain exceptions ( so and so played this many game...so and so wasnt a starter, etc etc) to help you justify the clear fact that the RA rockets have more talent then i'm not sure what to say. Other than good luck with that.
don't you think cd should take at least half of the blame? at same time, you should give morey some credits. we should keep it in mind that who you like sometimes depends on which one you focus on more, defense or offense. i personally believe defense is #1 priority to win.
