Revisionist history much? they brought it Adelman before firing JVG in a massively classless move.

What does that tell you about their desire to keep him?

They wanted JVG gone, and they took advantage of his waffling on coming back.

It was not classless, it was business, and good for the organization.

JVG did OK...it was a move good for everyone....

    Especially Rocket fans.

Keep those excuses coming...their warranty is good for another 2 years.

JVG and adelman are great coaches.

JVG did a great job with 2 stars who were often injured and pathetic role players. the role players were one of the worst. the only way we could have won was tmac and yao playing above their superstar levels.

adelman had the benefit of morey being GM. he has much better players to utilize, and he had the players playing under JVG's defensive philosophy and those players admitted they brought those defensive schmes with them under adelman.

i take either in a heartbeat. we would have done great things with JVG if we had the role players. and adelman would do great things if he had the star players.

If JVG is that darn good, why doesn't any of the other NBA teams want him?

Maybe other GMs know something that we fans don't know?

maybe this belongs to an episode of Ripley's Believe it or not.

Believe it or not folks no other team gave him a coaching offer.

    http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/06/jeff_van_gundy_out_of_the_runn.html

he TOOK HIMSELF OUT of the running for the nets' position this past offseason.

and he has said repeatedly he likes his current job b/c it allows hi mto spend more time with his family.

if he proclaimed himself as a "free agent," he would get a job with the quickness.

Interviewing someone for a job that is not yet open is classless. Spin it however you want, but you have been a JVG hater for as long as I have been here so I would not expect any different.

So if the reasoning of management is sacrosanct, what does it say when they run off various DD great white hopes every year, somehow failing to take up the "Next Tom Chambers!" crusade?

Or when the foreign twink of the month is sent packing?

Or when they ignore your annual "Fat boy says stand pat!!!" routine

    That you are wrong?

so if you have a wife that you are thinking of divorcing but she's hesitating b/c she "may" want to salvage the relationship, it's fine for you to go and initiate a new relationship with another woman?

business or not, that was classless. but we all know the team didn't want JVG back. so it was irrelevant.

TMAC and JVG Fans have that in common
It is always things AROUND THEM but never THEM in these things
TMAC and JVG are blameless. . . they were just poor poor victims of circumstance

I'm pretty much in agreement with that.

As you said, JVG's teams didn't have near the same depth and had to rely heavily on the stars. Adelman's teams have had much better depth and balance, but markedly less production from the stars.

So its funny that, considering their stylistic differences as coaches and different makeup of the teams, when you look at the offensive and defensive ratings of each of their two best teams there's not much difference.

That's a gross generalization and invalid comparison.

One huge difference between the JVG and TMac is that JVG always gave 100% effort preparing the team. You can say a lot of things about the guy, but lazy isn't one of them.

If you read the actual posts in this thread, those of us who argue that JVG was a good coach are not saying he's perfect. We are pointing out he and Adelman had comparable results when given comparable rosters.

JVG's undoing is that he clashed with Les Alexander, who publicly stated he wanted a more up-tempo style even though he had a slow 300 lb center and a primary perimeter scorer who did not (and does not) run in transistion. Thinking back on it, it was fine that JVG got fired. It's Les' team and it's best that he gets along with the coach. I am also glad that they hired another good coach, Adelman, to replace Van Gundy.

But the bottom line that Adelman achieved similar level of success, and played at a similar pace in both the Yao/McGrady year and the Yao/Artest year.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Van Gundy did talk to his brother and then signed off on Alston. On the other hand, in one interview after he was fired, he said that he had little input in the trade that brought in Battier.

I disagree. I think it would be more logical and Standard Operating Procedure or protocol for the General Manager to confer with the coach to inquire whether the prospective player will fit with the system.

Thats what investors call "due diligence" and it should be standard and just a cellphone call away anyhow.

You know, I have to disagree with that. What the coach does with the pieces is also another point of evaluation. Surely, the GM must take a form of accountability, but do you really feel Aaron Brooks would be a rotational player, let alone a 20ppg guy with JVG here? Do you think Scola would be a starter, let alone a 16/9 guy here? Do you think Carl Landry would've even developed since he plays pretty poor defense? You think Chase would've seen the time of day on the court in his rookie season?

All these can be classified as bad moves by Morey HAD Adelman not played them or developed them. Van Gundy is TOO CONSERVATIVE to ever develop. His pieces of development were Luther Head and Chuck Hayes. The people who need NO development since they are the same players they are from day 1. It's the reason why I'd be curious on V-Span,but his attitude didn't help.

Maybe, but I've read how not all coaches want to be overly involved in their GM's decision-making process, which has to be a balance of the long term and the short. That makes sense to me; it would be easy for a coach to lose focus if he knew all the potential trade moves behind his players.

Specifically about JVG, he did say he had no input about getting Battier (don't have the link); gave his approval for Alston; and as a Knicks coach, was against trading Oakley to get Camby, but it went through anyway. So I'd say his influence on personnel decisions is not the same for every move.
