Good God man. Seriously, it's almost time to ban threads involving VSpan. For one, he isn't a Rocket so I could careless about what he does from now on. Secondly, he netted us Scola so I'm glad we signed him last season. Third, he SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care about his Euro league stats, nor do I want to hear excuses made for him. I'm with the rest of the posters who say, if you care so much about him watch Euro ball but I don't want to hear about him anymore. The fact still remains he couldn't get pt at our weakest position. Blame it on JVG all you want but he played Lucas over VSpan. The Euro TMac can do whatever he wants as long as I don't have to hear his name anymore. Hell, I'd donate $50 if all VSpan threads were banned from the board
Agreed. One the circumstances under which a player is more likely to succeed especially as a rookie is how good a coach is at tolerating and correcting mistakes. A rookie is more likely to fail if he has a coach b****ing about every little mistake he makes and knowing that this will affect his playing time. On the other hand, a player will have more confidence on the court if the coach gives him confidence. Even rafer alston was playing like he was Steve nash with the amount of minutes he got, look at how confident he was playing.
Maybe said rookie needs to earn his playing time in practicew instead of getting beat out by John Lucas.
How can people say Span sucks while he is a rookie with less than full NBA games played, without admiting that JVG sucks more because he just got fired? Why is a guy who brought us the Euro MVP sucks more than a loser who brought us nothing?
I'm no Spanoulis lover, and I agree that Van Gundy was just trying to play whoever would get us a win. The notion of Van Gundy stooping to a vendetta against a never-been is ludicrous. But if Spanoulis spun a tale of his victimization to the press to distract them (or himself) from his failure on the court, isn't that kind of an homage to Van Gundy's exit? I don't want to imply they're the same -- my impression is that one guy lied, and the other didn't. But the "I was mistreated" song sounds pretty similar.
Man... this is a thread about the opinion of one guy who is no longer a Rocket about another guy who is no longer a Rocket. It's time to move on. Spanoulis clearly wants to play in Greece. Good for him.
I posted this in another thread mistakenly, so now I move it here. No I don't believe the JVG likes Span it's all just business propaganda, what kind of friend would go tell the media with misguided comments like "Span said he's T-Mac in Greece." No matter how you think about it, it just reflects badly on the person of JVG. If that's not called a major shaft job, I don't know what it is. JVG was the one who initiated playing politics with his players.
V-Span may not have been good or as bad as advertise, but we never got the chance to see that. Like Bonzi and Snyder, I think V-Span...probably ran his trap and end up at the end of bench. He was a first year internationally player in new country...hard to say how good or bad he was because he never got to play...there are players who have looked unbelievably bad in the first few games and went to have great careers, while kept the badness within routine. All three had issues, but if the right coach was in town, they would've had more P.T. and I think all 3 would've been beneficial to Rockets. You all remember how bad the offense was against the Jazz...I don't think we could've done much worse. 4 players only scoring in Game 3, with two of them taking up a good portion of that....and being behind at half time in almost every game....our offense sucked hard...harder than $10 dollar a job p*rn star. I don't mean to bash JVG, but I think Adelman could've did little more with selected players. Because...i don't know he is a better coach than JVG.
I'm not defending JVG. I'm happy with our new team and Adelman. However, JVG has been a coach in the NBA for quite a while and has a good track record. he's certainly much more qualified to evaluate NBA talent then any of us. If you think he had some vendetta against VSpan (when we needed help at the point) then I don't buy it. If VSpan would have earned pt I'm sure he would have played. Hayes did, Head did, Lucas did. Spare me the VSpan/JVG conspiracy theories. It seems all his supporters want to blame JVG. The funny thiong is that everyone is excited about our new coach and team. We aren't angry JVG is gone. it'sx just an excuse for VSpan supporters
What was Spanoulis supposed to do, Will, go back to Greece -- where he's idolized and the entire country was waiting to see him take over the NBA -- and tell them he just couldn't cut it? He started building the JVG-hates-me excuse from mid-season, and kept mentioning it in his blog so that it would build some credence over time. When he finally weaseled out of his contract with the Spurs, everything was set for him to return to Greece not as a failure, but rather as a misunderstood, mistreated hero.
maybe spanoulis isnt half as good as we hoped we'd turn out. but if you think jvg has no blame in this, you bury your head in the sand. Or should i rehash other personnel misjudgements made by the former coach....
Thats the point. Granting that Spanoulis indeed does not have enough talent to play in the NBA... JVG was a bigger mistake than Spanoulis and was principally responsible for our playoff failure. Even now he doesn't get it, he's just that stubborn. A little candor from JVG would have been more welcome about what went wrong in the playoffs, but since when do you hear JVG admitting his mistakes? Some reporter should ask him about his " man-love" for rafer alston... whats up with that? Hindsight is 20/20 but even with 20/20 vision JVG still doesn't see how it went wrong. I'm glad he isn't the coach of this team or we would end up repeating our mistakes in the same "stubborn" manner. I am very confident that Adelman will maximize the talent in our lineup and may even take us all the way. The liberal and flexible school of basketball coaching will beat the rigid and stubborn basketball coaching style anyday. As to JVG, those who do not learn from the mistakes of history are bound to repeat it. As to us rockets fans, our loyalty to a coach should end where our loyalty to our team begins.
So are you suggesting that he played Rafer Alston so many minutes because he had some sort of "man love" as you put it so elequently. If you are, that's just crazy. You think he wanted to get fired or lose games. Like I've said, I'm happy he is gone and we have installed a new offense with Adelman but what was the alternative? You have contradicted yourself by acknowledging VSpan didn't have NBA talent but blaming JVG for playing Rafer excessive minutes. it was because we had nothing at the pg position. No depth. None. Head had to play out of position. He tried Lucas. VSpan sucks. End of story
Vspan sucks. But are you trying to say JVG did not make any tactical errors. Blame everyone but JVG, he must be the last innocent man on this planet. We are not Vspan supporters, we acknowledge Vspan sucks but what we are saying is that there were many tactical errors, and many things that could have been done differently... do i need to post the recap of game 4 of the Western Conference Finals as to how the Spurs beat the Jazz with inside penetration instead of relying on three point shooting? ok here it is , from NBA.com " With each drive to the basket and each fall to the floor - flop or not - Manu Ginobili made the Utah Jazz and their fans angrier and angrier. Players and coaches complained to the refs. Fans booed, threw things and popped balloons. All Ginobili did was keep hitting his free throws, pushing the San Antonio Spurs to a 91-79 victory Monday night and a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals. Ginobili scored 22 points, 15 coming in the fourth quarter and 11 of those coming from the foul line. San Antonio was 19-of-25 on free throws in the final period, with four of the attempts courtesy of technical fouls. "I'm very proud of what we did in the fourth quarter because it was looking ugly for us,'' Ginobili said. "We stepped up and did a really good job.'' Some of the calls Ginobili got were questionable, but the key was he forced the action after not doing "too much to get under their skin the first three quarters.'' The Jazz weren't about to let him get to the rim easily and wound up losing their temper as the foul calls mounted. Utah drew four technicals fouls down the stretch, leading to the ejection of coach Jerry Sloan and usually mild-mannered Derek Fisher. Jazz fans saw their team lose at home for the first time in eight games this postseason. Of all the blows landed in this game, the most severe is to Utah's comeback hopes. After a 26-point win in Game 3, the Jazz felt good about their chances to pull off a historic comeback but now will have to win Game 5 in San Antonio on Wednesday night just to bring the series back to Salt Lake City. Utah has lost 18 straight games in San Antonio dating to 1999." Vspan sucks, are you willing to acknowledge that JVG sucks?
1. The first thing is so damn true.....but not always. I do think for today's NBA you have to be somewhat flexible with these players...I mean if JVG coached a team like the Suns....he might actually make them worst. 2. That's why we have new coach.
Who here is defending JVG? I haven't seen anyone as of yet. All I see is Rockets fans happy about our new team and new coach or VSpan supporters looking for any and every excuse to defend why he isn't an NBA player.
