No offense TheFreak, but seriously doubt if JVG really cares whether he "looks bad" at this point. And I don't know how the Rockets winning a series this year would make JVG "look bad". This is a completely different team then the one JVG coached in the past so I don't know how this year's team has anything to do with JVG. The only thing I can think is that you're upset that he's praising Houston so you're looking for a reason to tear him down.

I've always thought that JVG was a great coach. But he will never come back to be the assistant coach for any team. He might return to the NBA as a head coach one day.

For now, I'm liking him as a commentator.

Hopefully JVG doesn't get knocked out.

i don't think he said raefer was the third best pg in the league, if i remember correctly he said that raefer was playing at that time like the third best. there is a difference...

I still dont understand how did JVG know that Portland is not going to front Yao in the game.

Did he really said that on the radio?

He knew the game better than anyone.

Can't remember exactly, but i don't think Portland fronted Yao in the 4 Rocket-Blazer games this season.

yeah i dont think they did.

portland doesnt have the players to front yao really. they can try with aldridge or frye but that would mean going really small and portland doesnt really know how to play small ball. they may front on certain possessions but as a quarter long or even a half long strategy i do not see it happening. if they front with aldridge and then put pryz or oden on scola/landry then the same problems yao has on the other end with pick and rolls the blazers big men will have.

yao played really well he is not going to go 9-9 again i think they will stick with pryz on yao for most of the game...for the season i tihnk yao has struggled (compared to season avg) against portland.

one thing we didnt see though last night was Oden guarding Yao. he wont be able to just travel and back Yao down like he did Deke

Aldridge and Frye did front Yao when they were assigned to guard Yao but Yao managed to get some offensive rebounds as a result.

It has been so obvious to the league that the most effective way to stop Yao is fronting, even JVG called that out once. Just in the very last game against Dallas, the entire Rockets team, not only Yao, was completely shut down once Yao was fronted in the 2nd half. It's like a text book game for the rest of the league how to tame the 7 foot 6 beast.

But in this game, no double team, no fronting in the first half, what's in Nate's mind? And how did JVG figured that out? What's the biggest flaw in Portland's defence that they didn't want to bet on the fronting defence?

That's a match up I am looking forward to, just for the sake of enjoying great basketball game. I said earlier in the game thread that Oden will grow up after this series and Yao and his match up in the future seasons will be very interesting.

If you understand JVG, he is a very loyal person. He hired Ewing and Ward as his assistant. He invited Mark Jackson and Oakley to play for the Rockets in the short while. Despite the Rockets fired him, he still loved his former players.

It *is* a matter of matchups. The matchup problem Houston has with Jazz is twofold: because Okur plays on the perimeter, Yao is forced to guard the much quicker and more athletic Boozer/Millsap, who are able to drain midrange jumpers over him or drive past him if he tries to come out and contest. Guarding Okur would open up the paint for their cutters which they exploit with regularity. The other matchup problem is the big and athletic Deron Williams with his outside shooting prowess against our smallish point guards. Essentially they maximize their strengths at our points of greatest weakness. That's what constitutes a bad matchup.

It's the same with Portland, with the same positions. Our point guards are too quick for theirs too handle, and they simply cannot handle Yao. Their offensive pillars Roy and Aldridge are effectively contained by our all-NBA defenders at the forward positions. We are able to exploit their greatest weaknesses, but they can't exploit ours (except for fronting Yao). It's not a good matchup for them.

Those were the dumbest moves ever, uggghhh, bringing in those losers:
Mark Jackson, Charlie Ward, Oakley (the fake thug) and probably more New York aholes.
That guy brought in players that should've never played at that time: waaaayyy over the hill Rod Strickland, can only defend Bowen, can only shoot threes Padgett and a lot more of that kind.

This is no disrespect to you RedHonda 76, just stating the facts. JVG tried to turn the Rockets into the Knicks, I'm glad all those jokers are gone now. Forget about Jeff, he sounds like a pretty good guy but the games during his days were ugly low 80 ppg, all defense games and we haven't done **** in those years. Nuff said

Right, right, why couldnt he bring real players like management brought in like Moochie Norris and torraye Braggs, right???

The free agent talent wasnt very good back then, nothing we could afford. Remember we got tied up with some bad contracts before JVG even got here (like maloney). It wasnt so much he wanted to turn them into the knicks, but he wanted guys he was familiar with so he would know exactly how they'd fit and how they'd play for him.

Do you think JVG wouldnt have wanted guys like Brooks, scola, landry?? He didnt have those options back then. Adelman wouldnt have score at all either with the guys we had back then, look at chuck, he is what he is, whether he's under jvg or adelman, you cant turn guys like that into scoring options.
