I think former Houston athletes/coaches who put forth full effort and didn't stab the city in the back upon departure should be treated with respect. Making fun of Nick Anderson is fair game, though.
I despised JVG as the coach of the Rockets and think he is the main reason that the team underachieved, but....that was classless. The guy tried as hard as he could and did it HIS way, I respect the man for sticking to his guns. I don't agree with him but I respect him, and in no way should anyone be anything other than civil to him. He did his best, and that is all anyone can do. I am glad he is gone, but if I ever met him, I would thank him for his efforts. DD
That's not a JVG sighting... This is a JVG sighting. Lay off and respect JVG. He's a knowledgeable coach and is a tireless worker. Show some respect. He bled rocket red for his years here and now makes his home in Houston. Behind the stern glare, there he is with a warm embrace during his first year as Rox head coach. Shrugging off security, JVG agrees to pose for us. Thanks to Keith Jones for letting us on to the court. Jeff Van Gundy will be missed in my heart. You see I don't get this take on JVG. Its positively backwards in logic. He took this team from a lottery team to one of the top 5 or 6 teams in the Western Conference. No we didn't get out of the first round but the roster also had a lot of turnover each and every year. Regardless of the turnover of personel he still managed to get the team to OVERACHIEVE each year (sans the injury year). 50+ wins in nothing to take lightly and his teams did it twice and came close a third time in his first season. If not for Francis and his dope smokin' pose' he probably would have. Like his coaching style or not you cannot argue his winning regular season record. End of rant!!!
the rockets underachieving (which is silly considering the roster) has more to do with their best players and supposed "superstars" not playing well than with poor coaching. I guess i will never understand why people believe the latter was the biggest problem.
1 There are people out there, and in here, who think that by putting down or insulting someone that others admire, it somehow makes them look better. But, it just makes them look stupid and insecure. The same for those who laugh at them, or pile on. Everyone with any maturity and common sense can see it. 2 Regardless of what you thought of JVG capabilities or personality, he bled Rockets red. He deserves to be appreciated and respected by Houston fans. I'd be honored to shake his hand and compliment him, just as I would any Rocket player or former player. I'd love to hear the real scoop behind lots of stuff. He'd tell you like it is. The guy accomplished a lot with what he had. Coach of the Year stuff. Those of you who hate him look clueless, and those who know way more basketball than you or I admire him bigtime. You should too. 3 I don't know if JVG could have won the championship for us. I don't know if he had the leadership capabilities to do it. There's no doubt he got a lot out of his players, and that they were always prepared for every game. He knew his Xs and Os, and has an incredibly high basketball IQ. But, he can grow weary on players over time, just like Brown and Riley. I don't think even he knows whether he could take us to the championship or not. So, perhaps it was time for a change for someone who could. He's developed our team to play amazing team defense, and built a solid foundation for playoff success. If we succeed, he will have a significant part in developing it. But, he didn't deserve to go out the way he did. 4 The guy to be pissed with is Les. Les developed a dislike for Jeff, and I believe he sabataged him. He got in a pissing war, and didn't give him the players he wanted or needed to do the job, so he'd have an excuse to get rid of him, even though he almost won coach of the year. Pretty pathetic. The FANS lost. I believe that's the reason the team was so dispirited in the Jazz series, which we should have won with this personnel. Some of the players mentioned that they heard that JVG might not be with the team during the series. Now, that's sabatage. The only decent player we've gotten since TMac is Battier, and we gave away too much to give him, keeping us from getting the additional players we needed. Then, when we could have gotten James, who JVG was pushing hard for, they killed it in the end, blaming it on the trade kicker. We missed out on plenty of valuable players, like Chandler and Duhon, among others, who would have helped us get there. My only hope at this point, is that with that excuse out of the way, maybe they'll bring in the right players now.
What? You think winning 53 games with a bunch of old 2nd stringers and a brokeback is UNDERachieving?

Responding to posts like yours tend to get me in trouble. So..... Suffice it to say, that winning 52 games in the regular season is great, but I want success in the playoffs, especially with home court advantage. I believe JVG was as much a part of the team's success during the regular season as he was a part of the failure in the playoffs.... Nuff said ! DD
