Sounds like there is definately more than one move they are considering making by that last sentence...
John: can you overstate what Bobby Sura has meant to this basketball team considering the start that you had without him and then the last couple of games we see its not nearly the same ball movement without Sura in the lineup? Jeff Van Gundy: well i would say this, the three things that bob sura brought to us that are hard to replace. rebounding one - that showed up in the seattle game, a lot of long rebounds we didnt get to. two, penetration, uh the game is much harder on mcgrady when he's always having to create for everyone else instead of someone else being able to dirbble dribble drive and create some plays and i think third bobs got great passion, physical toughness, and uh we miss that too so i dont think anybody could argue.. most certainly he's been our third best player this year. thats why his injures worry us, not for just right now, but down the line. i think in conjunction with david wesely and jon barry our guard play has been much different over the last two months vs the first six month of the season
Good post. SA and Seattle are 2 of the better teams in the league and SA has only lost 1 game at home. But like forchette said, I think the glaring hole at PG is what most of us is worrying about. We are in a critical point in the season that can make or break us and our PG play might be the reason.
I just don't see how we can't land a point guard today, especially with the notion that Sura might be in and out of the lineup all season with injuries that may take an offseason to heal. Sure a banger PF would be more marquee, but a steady, non-allstar, and true, PG (ala Claxton, Alston, Orroyo, etc.) that can come in and just get the job done, might just put us over the top...short and long-term... I'll go on to say that if no deal is made today, especially now, I'll be really dissapointed... P.S. They better hurry up!!! What's left, like 3 hours!!!
Interesting comments. Seems a little odd to me how open the Rockets are in discussing possible moves. You see Bill Worrell and Van Chancellor alluding to trades on air, now Van Gundy on the radio discussing hopeful deals. I remember the Rockets used to be a much more tight-lipped organizatin.
I was encouraged by the Rox effort and results, to a point (sic). Shorthanded they still competed. It was positive. Of course, with older teams come injuries. By next season, the Rox need greater depth, and younger players.
I disagree about the whiner reputation. I think he's just trying to send a message to his team to stop complaining. Yao grimmaces and does nothing. Tmac doesn't whine much (too little for my liking). The only guys that really say or do anything are Deke and Barry.
I look at it another way. We are done for the season if we DON'T make a move and I think they realize that with Sura being out the next couple of weeks. They could get themselves in a hole they can't get out of.
yeah I dont understand the whiny team label. Arent the Spurs and the Lakers considered the whiniest teams in the nba? like what about the crap Duncan pulled getting an intentional foul on JHoward to make a point? Im glad he got a T but in the end he started getting to the FT line alot more. J
host John: coach have you found him,, now that tracy is your best player.. yaos the best player.. those two or the best players …have you found as far as the leadership deal goes.. you know their quieter guys …has Sura become the leader of the team. JVG: Well I think they all lead in their own ways I think your best players are always going to be your leaders, for good or for bad. And your best players are gonna set a tone by how they work in practice, how hard they compete in games, if they play nicked up or not, theres so many ways that your best players without speaking lead you and set a tone. That being said, I think bob has great credibility with our team because when he was playing with his knee, when he will hit the floor for a loose ball, when you see a guy get rebounds in traffic, all those things are inspirational and bring great credibility and bob is more apt to speak so when he does spaek he speaks from a high level of credibility. Lance: How about Yao Ming the last 2 games, 20 of 29 from the field,, his offense has just been terrific when he’s been on the court. The foul trouble has been a issue I wasn’t crazy about the officiating in the seattle game I wouldn’t expect you to comment on that ..(Gundy interrupts: no, I will! I’ll comment on that) lance: ok then uh I though yesterday there was is some times where Yao brings trouble upon himself, he moves his feet ok and he gets there but he doesn’t seem to play very smart at the point of attack, theres times he gets to the ball and commits silly fouls so sometimes its his own doing but other times like in seattle I thought was just preposterous! JVG: well I thought, you know, my frustration uh obviously is that I think teams like Seattle come in with the gameplan of pounding Yao uh its like officials get use to seeing all the contact and allowing it and theres been assurances by the league over the last year and a half that they were going to monitor yao in particular, uh size, how much contact he was having to absorb - hasn’t happened. Which is led to some frustration . And I don’t say this often, we took a number of questionable calls in the seattle game, one I didn’t like was the loose ball foul late, that should of just been an out of bounds call, ball going there way, make them earn it, and I was very surprised by that call by such a good official in danny Crawford. But I also do not like how we have responded to officials, we seemingly on every 50-50 call uh are complaining and these people are human and how you talk to them is just as important as what you say to them and we have to pick the right times and we’re getting a reputation deservedly of being a team that whines constantly and so if we’re going to get any better breaks there uh we need to conduct ourselves with the officials much better with much more poise. As far as Yao individually uh we need to obviously have him on the floor and the problem with getting beat off the dribble, either on the pick and roll, or on dirbble penetration is you said at the point of contact, they are going to be bang-bang plays that put him in harms way and we have to do a much better jop of keeping him out of harms way but then when the ball does come at him he’s got to make instantaneous right decisions - can I block, am I in the restricted area, if im in the restricted area I cannot stay on the ground I’ve gotta go up in the air vertically - all those things are instantaneous decisions which at times he struggled with, gotten better, but struggled with.
