In my mind, JVG is a qualified coach, not a great coach at all. He is short sighted, i can not agree more.
How many players do you want in our rotation, anyhow? Do you want him to play every player every game? Or do you want him to change the rotation game-by-game so everyone gets a chance to play?
Kirk Snyder averages 14.3 min/g and Bonzi averages 21.2 min/g when healthy. Isn't that great? Your wish has come true.
I am not speaking for dakota, but given JL3's few good games are interspersed among many more bad games, cutting JL3 is a good start to change the rotation.
Except that we don't have another backup point, besides Billy. I like him, but he's been a turnover machine far too often. I wish he would get a few minutes on a consistent basis, so we could see if he's improved on that.
Considering Novak has had NO good games, and many bad ones, and Spanoulis has had many more bad games than good ones, would you endorse cutting them as well?
I don't mind JL3s bad game.....it happens. But I really think he is an undersized scoring guard and not a PG. While Span is a PG...I don't understand why JVG has them both playing out of position. DD
I actually do not have a problem with his rotation per se....but I would like to see him sub in players EARLIER in the game to rest his starters. I would like to see V-Span at the backup PG role and JL3 in the Earl Boykins change of pace going small role. And I would like to see Novak get some minutes each game as well. We play great defense and it seems that all JVG's decisions are based upon the defensive side of the ball.... And, the last time I looked the team that scores the most points...wins. DD
Not yet. We haven't seen enough of their play to make the final verdict, more importantly, we haven't seen JVG play them the right way in many games. On the other hand, we've seen enough of JL3's iso-play. We know if he doesn't shoot well he is nothing but garbage that should be swept off the floor instantly. Gawd, I hate that midget with a passion.
I like what he brings to the court....but he needs to have the right guys around him...... And, I like the change of pace he brings to the team...... JL3 is not the problem...IMHO. DD
DD I am right there with you.. I don't hate JVG... But I don't like him either. I don't like the fact that he is stubborn and will not change. In the Dallas game AJ adjusted and changed his entire approach on Offense and Defense. Basically all sports are about adjustments.. That is why I said in another thread that JVG is a great asst coach and a great defensive coach, but not a great head coach. I respect Avery Johnson, Mike D'Antoni and Bill Belichick becuase they are coaches who will adapt and adjust no matter the odds without any excuses (Injuries, players, etc..)....
The way it is going we can only be one play-off team and will have no chance in the playoff. I agreed totally that we should give Novak, VP, BW, KS at least 10 minutes per game to develop them and to reserve our starters' energy for the playoff. JVG should realize that no matter how attractive your regular games' figures are, he'll be fired if the team cannot win in the playoff. Also he is too slow (or timid) to make changes on most occasions - hence he has been outcoached by other coaches in most games.
Firstly, Spanoulis has gotten the same opportunity as Lucas. They have played virtually the same number of minutes. I don't know what you mean by "play them the right way." That's just you making an excuse for them playing poorly. Secondly, YOU haven't seen enough to make a verdict. That doesn't mean the coaching staff hasn't seen enough to make an informed decision. Obviously, the coaches have seen a lot more of Spanoulis and Novak the last few months than you have.
I agree with the main thrust of this thread that JVG is short sighted, and I might add that he is narrow minded. He plays tricks with the players he didnt' want in the first place. Novak is not JVG's type of player and got showed up by JVG as a starter against the Suns. JVG did it to expose Novak and shut up Novak's supporters. I think Novak's confidence took a great hit after the game. Some idiots think that it's always the player's fault and never the coach's fault, in reality players are the horses, and coach is the one pulling the reins. Players are the actors, coach is the director and writer. If the plot sucks, the actors don't act well despite being good. If it's all the players fault and no blame goes to a coach, then it should be all credits for the players and none for the coach. Some other idiots think that scrubs don't deserve 5 minutes each game, they forgot the best moments of a scrub can be better than the worst moments of a superstar. And the only way to find out a scrub's best moments is to play him in a game. Yao Ming is getting worn out by JVG's workhorse type of approach to the game. Yao has the most workload as a center in the current NBA and the most workload for a guy above 7'3" ever. Not surprisingly, he's only 26 years old and suddenly become injury prone with two major injuries in less than one year. T-Mac got overworked to the point of exhaustion in the Dallas game. As they say, if one is not smart enough, then he puts in more effort for success. However, if one is limited in gas- the fuel for efforts- over exhaustion of gas will bring short term benefits but long term ill effects. The long term ill effects have began to surface. Yao and T-Mac's window of winning is closing out. Let us pray they can win a ring before they get washed up by JVG. My biggest gripe is that JVG is not the best type of coach for Yao and T-mac, he is short on methods and demanding on efforts, yet Yao and T-mac are a great combo for implementing many methods while both are short on gas. Yao has the physical burden of weighing 300 lbs and standing at 7'6", T-Mac has already great mileage and a weak back. JVG suits a team made of high intensity, durable and gritty players, which is the reason he went to the finals with the Knicks. Yao and T-mac suits a coach who is resourceful to unleash the great offensive variety locked within their bodies. During JVG's tenure, I have not seen much of two man game between Yao and T-Mac, how does Yao and T-Mac coexist is still a problem after several years. Forgive me to not fall in JVG orgasm when our team beats some crappy to mediocre teams. Despite JVG's coaching shortcomings we do have a great combo in the NBA history, winning it all this year is not likely IMHO, but we can put up a fight in the playoffs.
Let's see. We've had the toughest schedule of all the teams. We've been without key players for virtually the whole season. And yet, we have one of the top records in the league with the coach "pulling the reins". You convinced me. Van Gundy is doing a fantastic job.
Really, we should all clap for the wise choice of words "toughest schedule" of all the teams. That's the price to pay by hiring JVG. Short sightedness, over working, injuries, narrowmindedness in not playing certain player he doesn't like. One of the top records because we've always had one of two top players in the game, or sometimes both. We have top players to begin with. JVG is not doing a bad job, but not that good either. He brings postiveness to the team on defense and hard working, he is pretty average or below average on other aspects IMHO. Time will tell if his deficiencies are fatal to the Rockets. Thanks to JVG, he is doing a fantastic job in winning regular season games in a playoffs fashion, though. Let's talk when every team is on the same page in the playoffs.
Some of you people don't even think before you post. Let me see...how many games has Dirk missed due to injury? Yeah, Avery's doing a fantastic job coaching without him. Mike D'Antoni? Roflcopters. What's Phoenix's record without Steve Nash again? Yeah, I thought so. Bill Belichick. Brilliant ... throw in some successful NFL coach's name in at random. Oh yeah...how many games has Tom Brady missed due to injury? Seriously. Do you people ever stop to think before you post?
I don't know what the hell this means. Sagarin's rating shows we've had the most difficult schedule, as does Hollinger's recent power rankings. McGrady is averaging his fewest MPG since he left Toronto. Yao was injured by a fluke accident. Bonzi wasn't in shape for the first month of the season, and his shoddy production on the court and susceptibility to injuries since then indicate he wasn't ready. All the JVG-haters follow the same, boring talking points. I swear, this board is overrunning with mini-Charlie Rosens, and it's disgusting. Right, to make any sense out of our winning record despite the injuries having such a terrible coach, you have to overrate the players. Now Yao and McGrady are suddenly the two best players in the league. Brilliant. Hell, with both of them healthy we should be going for 70 wins. I love how you contradict yourself here. The coach controls the reins and the fate of the team -- as long as we lose. But if we win, of course, it's because we have the best player in the league on our squad. With players we've had available this season, we should have been on a 40-45 win pace. Instead, we're on a 50+ win pace. We have the best defense in the league. We're winning without a starter-quality PG or PF, and while getting very little offensive production from our center position. That's good coaching, end of story. What the hell. So, is he doing a fantastic job, or "not that good" a job? You sound kind of confused here. I don't blame you, it's late. Time to sleep for me.
Good, then. Not surprisingly, McGrady is having back problems again and again and again under JVG's hard practice and high intensity game style. I don't blame it solely on JVG, but it's undeniable his style adds quite a lot of burden on a weak back. Yao is 26 years old with two major injuries in less than a year under JVG's hard training and high intensity game style. One is a fluke, two is not. It's undeniable that Yao's great workload under JVG's coaching wears out his body fast. His gigantic body, in particular, is not built for extra high intensity game style. His year round schedule makes JVG's high intensity style unsuitable for him as well. You admit that Bonzi's shoddy production on the court and susceptibility to injuries since then indicate he wasn't ready to play, thank you, it means JVG was wrong to play and thus overworked an out of shape Bonzi prematurely and is responsible for Bonzi's injury. It all falls in with my argument that JVG's great effort demanding approach is short sighted and makes injuries happen more. All the JVG blind followers are afraid to think independantly, JVG has become L.Ron Hubbard No.2 and found his own cult Nutsuckology. And to polish the shoes of JVG you have to underrate the players we have. Also, please stop twisting my words. 1. I did not say JVG is a terrible coach. I said he is not that good, meaning not to the point of being "fantastic". 2. I did not say 111 are the two best players, I said they are two top players. Twisting words all the time makes you look helpless. You don't seem to get it. So let me explain it again. The coach and players are both responsible for wins and losses. It's certain that Yao and T-Mac are top players in the league, does that mean the rest of team are top notch? Hell no. For example,Some of the role players are not top notch. And the coach isn't necessary top notch as a result either. If you are not a top notch rider but you have a top notch horse, it's possible for an excellent result. JVG is an above average coach overall in the regualr seaons IMHO, he has to take the Rockets deep into the playoffs to be claimed as a top notch coach. We've always had one or two top players in the game, our pg is marginal starter and pf is a former Max player who still has some gas left. Blessed with a defensive and rebounding machine at the 5, a solid starter at sf. They played hard and won. Now on the hard working part. It's JVG's luck that the team is made of unselfish personalities and hard working players. JVG did not make the players into hard working players, if a player is not a hard worker by himsel, JVG ships him out, like Stromile Swift. The story is JVG pushed hard working players work hard and contributed in that category along with the players. Some times I think the main players work too hard, especially Yao and T-Mac. I like hard working, just not too much. I would rate the coaching as good, which falls into "not bad, not that good", but not "fantastic" as you previously said. Glad that you agree with me now and toned down from "fantastic" to "good". You wonder who are really fantastic? Yao and T-Mac. A good coach riding on fantastic players' backs gets crowned as being "fantastic" in the process, and seems to be also crowned as demi god beyond criticism, quite a good deal huh? No, you are confused because I was talking about two different things. First, He is doing a good job in winning now. Second, as for doing a fantastic job in winning regular season games in playoff fashion, it was sarcasm but I guess your sarcasm detector was off. Good night.
