JVG coaches HIS style - IF you have the correct players, it works. square pegs won't fit in round holes and Yao will never be Shaq or Patrick Ewing - - agree with DD - doesn't do halftime adjustments well , let alone late 4th quarter .......
agreed. I guess people got so use to watching crap for all those years they dont know how to respond to a prepared coach, players that are likable and easy to cheer for, and most importantly, playoffs and 50 win seasons.
Yes we should, but we need to have more than just one style, whenever team's front Yao and double Tmac at the top, we need to have a way of beating that defense. And, on the other side of the ball, whenever we play teams with good perimeter footspeed and good perimeter shooters, we need to be able to adapt our defense to cut out their looks, simply packing the paint is not good enough against those teams. I would not be unhappy if he gets a contract extension for getting us out of the first round, but I FEEL he needs to do more to earn it. Personally, I think Les is bugged by his demeanor, and probably feels it hurts the team's overall appearance.......which is why he asked him to be more happy this year. I also think JVG buying the Rowdy tickets was the best investment he could have made for a contract extension (outside of winning, of course). DD
After two straight wins in which the team is down at the half, why are people questioning halftime adjustments?
whoever has two great players like TMac and Yao on its team, has to win a championship in less then 5 years!
Good point, but Utah is a perfect fit for JVG ball....... Let's see how they do in the next round. DD
Because they don't understand basketball. Van Gundy's philosophy is that your best chance of winning is to be exactly who you are. You learn what you can do and do as best as you can. You don't try to be the Phoenix Suns because you are playing the Suns. You exploit other people's weaknesses with your strengths. You don't try to beat other teams strengths with your weaknesses. JVG has often refered to the Spurs when talking about this. They don't change (adjust) for anyone. Look what happened to the Mavs when Johnson tried to get cute with his lineup. Usually what people mean by JVG not adjusting is that he won't get V-Span off of his cozy spot on the bench. It is not a basketball argument. Van Gundy does adjust matchups, but usually doesn't adjust lineups. He did give Snyder a few minutes the last game. I thought that was good. I think he is handeling the matchup with Ming/Boozer and Hayes/Okur as good as it can be handled. People need to get specific. If you want JVG to adjust at halftime, what do you mean? How would you approach playing the Jazz differently? And please don't tell me you would play V-Span and Novak!
Agreed- Van Gundy will get re-signed for 3 years minimum- If he leaves that would be strictly his decision He is firmly entrenched
Do you think that TMac and Yao are a better duo than Stockton/Malone? If we used this logic, then even Jerry Sloan would be coaching junior college somewhere.
making adjustments in playoffs is deadly for any team you play the way you played all season long... switching now any player on the team would be IMO dumb JVG would never do that
1. I could actually see him leaving for a bigger contract like most coaches do, I could definitely see him coaching a team like the Kings, Hawks, Magic, or a return to N.Y. And even making those teams competitive. 2. He is good coach, we have good players, but we still haven't won title or even got the WCF. You see lots of good teams who have the right players and the right coach, but they don't go as far as they should in the playoffs or reach the glass ceiling as far as their potential (see 90s Jazz, 00s Kings, 80s-90s Trailblazers, Indians in baseball, and maybe the Suns/Mavs now). And it soon comes a time you do have to change or rebuild the roster or coaching staff for whatever reason. 3. This team might be headed for a rebuilding period anyway...the T-Mac/Yao is still in question. The team does have a new general manager, attendance hasn't been spectacular, and isn't this team supposed go up for sale in few years? 4. If he goes I don't think he will be fired, but he will either resign and temporarily take a break or go coach another team for money.
On the "Square Pegs" thing. I agree JVG isn't flexible enough for my taste. (very little out of talented players with mental or character defects like Swift, Wells, Snyder). But JVG is what he is--this is not something he is going to change with, and IMO we have a lot of good square pegs for our square holes (Yao, Tmac, Battier). We might only need one or two more square pegs for our square holes to be complete and it could all come together. Changing now given the progress, unless for an instant impact, instant player buy-in legend, would be going backwards. I take more issue with PT distributions, rotations, and that I think his comfort zone is too narrow (pushes his trusted vets hard and doesn't just try enough wild cards when things are not going well). That is why I say bring in SVG on staff. While I don't think JVG will ever change about his approach to discipline that some players just can't deal with, surely another trusted set of eyes and ears might loosen him up about game tactics/substitutions.
I saw a blog input from Richard Justice, "It's high time owner, coach get together". "It's high time"? Are you kidding me? Let's talk about game 3. Any MMS link then please?
