Absolutly not, but it does show that JVG can make good in the playoffs with this team. I think he has to get out of the first round and do WELL in the 2nd round to earn an extension. My issue with JVG is his lack of adjustments, or lack of being able to match up with different styles etc. Utah is the PERFECT first round opponent for Houston, they are a slow down team that is mentally weak. The 2nd round against Dallas or a matchup nightmare in Golden State will tell a lot more about JVG's coaching abilities. I think he has the Rockets VERY prepared to play his style, now whether or not that style is good enough is the crux of the argument between people who like him and people who think he is not the right coach. If the Rockets get past Utah, and play the Mavs or GS tough......making adjustments along the way.....then I will happily endorse a new contract for JVG. But if the Rockets go down in the 2nd round by not making adjustments to what the other team is doing....I will be happy to see a change. DD
It's only been 2 games! We still have more games in this series and you already see us losing. I wouldn't worry about the 2nd round just yet. Let's just worry about game 3, before we get rid of our coach for not making it past the 2nd round.
its just mindboggling to me that people are still calling for JVGs head to roll or even making these little caveats, like "well he has to do well in the 2nd round"...give it a rest and swallow some of your pride. WTH does that mean anyways? do well?
That little blurb there came as a result of an article written by the great Richard Justice, Writer of Wrongs. He's the one going about making speculation that Les Alexander doesn't want JVG in Houston anymore. Nice job, Dick. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/justice/rockets/4746154.html
No disputing JVG's knowledge of the game, his personality and his leadership style are horses of a different color. I get the impression that many in the Rocket's organization don't care for his personna, and indisputably he is the worst post game interview in the league. I sense that his relationship with the owner may be a bit strained. Just quesses based on a few tid bits of information. Being in the playoffs without a new contract strikes me as strange. I have to be conservative with my posts the next few days, because I want my 4000th post to be on the day the Rockets win the 4th game of this series.
We won't find a better coach on the open market than Van Gundy. With retreads like PJ Carlesimo and Randy Wittman out there, we'd be a helluva lot better off sticking with what we have.
Who cares about Vspan and Novak? I don't understand the obsession. They don't play because they are not good enough. When they are good enough they will play. What is so hard to understand about that? The idea that Van Gundy has "neutured" them is silly. They play in practice. They play in garbage time, and just about every time they get killed by the other team's garbage players. Let's evaluate Van Gundy on results, not if he plays one of your pet players.
That would be absolutely outrageous if JVG doesn't come back. I will completely lose all respect for Lex Alexander if he's responsible for this. IF JVG does indeed leave, you should all know that the Pacers just fired Rick Carlisle. I heard Jermaine O'Neal doesn't get along with him, so I guess he wouldn't want to come to Houston in a trade. If that's false and he likes Carlisle, then maybe he can persuade Jermaine to come here.
I could be wrong here...memory is a bit fuzzy...but weren't you saying earlier this year that you would endorse him if we got out of the first round??? Now that we are up 2 games (granted this series is FAR from over), you suddenly extend it to us having to do well in round 2. Look, IF we beat Utah (if we don't I want JVG gone myself) and lose to Dallas, it isn't b/c of adjustments. It's b/c the Mavs are the best team in basketball (besides their matchup problems with GS) There is no shame in losing to a 66 win team...and we don't have the personel to adjust to their style of play. We have to play our game and hope our shooters step up and play D.
So, you would rather them appear creative and be entertaining than win? I'm glad we disagree. I'm glad Rudy disagreed back when our offense with Hakeem was labeled as "boring" and they brought home the hardware for two years.
so does avery johnson not deserve a contract extension after his botched attempt at an adjustment in the lineup of game 1 vs. golden state? i understand your point of adjustments but we have the best one two punch in the league and we should be making our opponents play our style and to your strenghts.
vast majority uncalled for and completely non-basketball related, e.g. He's stubborn, he's negative, i even heard someone diss him for his interviewing skill
Unless we know we could get Riley or Larry Brown or Phil Jackson or Popovich (I would not do this move for Flip, Carlise, MDA, AJ, Nelson, etc, etc...), someone with instant credibiity and no learning curve, this would be a terrible move. And I have critized JVG about various things. Now I am not sure we are good enough in the role players to win the title this year. But JVG's approach seems to be coming together and he has a lot of players on the same page. If we add another really good role player or two this offseason (need to make sure they have some skill and are likely to fit in with JVG--unlike Wells, Swift, etc) we could be in business. Outside a total collapse versus the Jazz or the avalability of a of proven multiple title winner--this would be a very bad move for the whole team. Now I would also be on board with adding SVG (he did guide a Mia team to 60 wins I believe and a respectable title run) to the coaching staff where Jeff might occasionaly defer to him for some advice (hopefully to expand the rotation and spread role player's minutes better).
Exactly and its frustrating to read over and over again. JVG as done an excellent job in his time in Houston and I think it'd be a big mistake to let him go, which I doubt would happen.
