If a team is down by 25 pts, that a halfcourt shot made by the team that was down would mean an automatic overtime. - JVG Some other jewels of JVG Another amazing idea proposed by JVG was the idea to carry a razor blade on to the court. Jeff's idea is that if someone were on a break you could take out your hidden blade, cut yourself, and show the referee before the fast break was complete. Apparently blood being on someone or their jersey during the game is cause for an immediate game stoppage. (in reference to Marc Jackson's comment that he wants a point guard who will compete even if he isn't the greatest defensively) "That's spoken like a man who has never coached a game in the NBA." This comment on it's own isn't troublesome....it's what follows that got me. "You know if I wouldn't be surprised.. a lot of people would like him (Marc Jackson) as a coach or a GM. If I was an NBA owner I'd give him the keys to the whole darn thing." WHAT?! Jeff, you just told us what he wanted in players was not what any reasonable coach would want... why would you make him your GM? Add to that you just noted his inexperience as a coach. Again I ask; WHAT?! http://hellyesguy.blogspot.com/2008/01/somone-please-hire-jeff-van-gundy.html
Some of it was discouraging as a pure Rockets fan but oh well . . - They're definitely going to make the playoffs. - Win at the same rate . . or BETTER. - Still can win a first round. - Dikembe's love of the game! - Great TEAM MATE, which is why his team mate hope for him, and he'll play VERY well to his up most physical ability, and he has a great love of the game. - New dimension for the Rockets offense to adjust. - Scola is HANDS DOWN ROY, NO QUESTION. - When Yao was hurt, TMAC absolutely carried the team on his back. - TMAC will play great basketball, he's going to play at a high level, got the will to WIN. - Only thing that can get in the way of him, is him. Sometimes he goes through bouts of boredom with the regular season because he's been doing it for so long at such a high level. Goes through other periods of regrets with that some of his injuries has taken away some things instead of focusing on the game, and he wishes he was more dominant. Yao and Tmac are a definite dominant combination as proven. Only thing that has hurt them is HEALTH. - AI is one of the only players who relentlessly in going to the basket, but all the leaders of scores in this league are more of a jump shooter for example Kobe is doing it, Jordan did it, VC went through it because of wear and tear or loss of athleticism and is because of adjustment they all make. - What hurts Tracy is his inconsistent shooting, but when he makes his jumpshot, it opens up his driving, as long as he is attacking at the right times. He's got to now adjust and drive more. To be a relentless drive attacker as he was 21 or 22, is a little unrealistic . - - - - - My thoughts: I still think we're the BEST team in the NBA, and we will run the crap out of every team when Deke is not in and we will be undefeated heading into the Playoffs, as well as winning series and going to the Finals. I STILL BELIEVE IN THE ROCKETS IN WINNING A CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR BECAUSE THIS YEAR IS OUR YEAR WHETHER OR NOT WE HAVE YAO! COME ON ROCKETS FANS! BELIEVE!
The Rockets should offer Van Gundy a personal services contract like Clemens has with the Astros. Van Gundy's job would be to advise on defensive schemes and to meet the currently unfilled need of somebody standing in a suit in front of the Rockets bench who appears to give a damn about the game. In fact, it would be better than Clemens, since Gundy doesn't look like he's on juice, unless you count the hair loss.
I agree with everything other than rookie of the year being a joke. Here's a list of ROY's. I'd say its generally a pretty good indicator of being a really good player with a few notable exceptions. 2006-07 - Brandon Roy, Portland 2005-06 - Chris Paul, New Orleans/Oklahoma City 2004-05 - Emeka Okafor, Charlotte 2003-04 - LeBron James, Cleveland 2002-03 - Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix 2001-02 - Pau Gasol, Memphis 2000-01 - Mike Miller, Orlando 1999-00 - Elton Brand, Chicago (tie), Steve Francis, Houston 1998-99 - Vince Carter, Toronto 1997-98 - Tim Duncan, San Antonio 1996-97 - Allen Iverson, Philadelphia 1995-96 - Damon Stoudamire, Toronto 1994-95 - Grant Hill, Detroit (tie), Jason Kidd, Dallas 1993-94 - Chris Webber, Golden State 1992-93 - Shaquille O'Neal, Orlando 1991-92 - Larry Johnson, Charlotte 1990-91 - Derrick Coleman, New Jersey 1989-90 - David Robinson, San Antonio 1988-89 - Mitch Richmond, Golden State 1987-88 - Mark Jackson, New York 1986-87 - Chuck Person, Indiana 1985-86 - Patrick Ewing, New York 1984-85 - Michael Jordan, Chicago 1983-84 - Ralph Sampson, Houston 1982-83 - Terry Cummings, San Diego 1981-82 - Buck Williams, New Jersey 1980-81 - Darrell Griffith, Utah 1979-80 - Larry Bird, Boston 1978-79 - Phil Ford, Kansas City 1977-78 - Walter Davis, Phoenix 1976-77 - Adrian Dantley, Buffalo 1975-76 - Alvan Adams, Phoenix 1974-75 - Keith Wilkes, Golden State 1973-74 - Ernie DiGregorio, Buffalo 1972-73 - Bob McAdoo, Buffalo 1971-72 - Sidney Wicks, Portland 1970-71 - Dave Cowens, Boston (tie), Geoff Petrie, Portland 1969-70 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Milwaukee 1968-69 - Wes Unseld, Baltimore 1967-68 - Earl Monroe, Baltimore 1966-67 - Dave Bing, Detroit 1965-66 - Rick Barry, San Francisco 1964-65 - Willis Reed, New York 1963-64 - Jerry Lucas, Cincinnati 1962-63 - Terry Dischinger, Chicago 1961-62 - Walt Bellamy, Chicago 1960-61 - Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati 1959-60 - Wilt Chamberlain, Philadelphia 1958-59 - Elgin Baylor, Minneapolis 1957-58 - Woody Sauldsberry, Philadelphia 1956-57 - Tom Heinsohn, Boston 1955-56 - Maurice Stokes, Rochester 1954-55 - Bob Pettit, Milwaukee 1953-54 - Ray Felix, Baltimore 1952-53 - Don Meineke, Fort Wayne
I believe the organization offered him just that at the end of May last year. The next day, he declined, did not have his contract renewed, and signed a 1 month deal with ABC within an hour.
We are all entitled to our opinions. But a recent list of ROY's is hardly a "joke"... Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Webber, Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Elton Brand, Steve Francis, Mike Miller, Pau Gasol, Amare Stoudemire, LeBron James, Emeka Okafor, Chris Paul & Brandon Roy. Doesn't help his team? I'm not sure what you, VG or anyone else would expect considering what surrounds Durant.
You're right, that's a pretty good list. Everyone one of those players had a better rookie season than Durant. He should one day be a star, and that's what the voters are going to vote by. But remove Durant from the Sonics roster, and I don't believe they're going to be any worse than what they are right now. That's the joke: voting on potential rather than what the player has done to make his team better.
for the past month or so manu is. dude has been crazy. he didn't say manu is the point-blank 2nd best after kobe. manu has been on a great stretch and deserves some praise.
Thanks for your recap. I fully agree with him. I must say JVG is a good commentator, but not a good coach.
