I don't mind rollin the dice a little bit,but the risk factor here is too high for my taste. We are dealing from a position of strength and have a large window. The main thing is increasing quality while keeping flexibilty. To wit, what is Spree going to eat up capwise? And of course there is the chemistry issue. There are plenty of guys out there that want to play here and who will fit our needs.I think we can do better.
Well, I'll miss the great chemistry. But it would seem irrelevant now. Who can we be sure we'll keep, other than T-Mac and Yao? I'd love Barry to get resigned, because I like his edge, and he'll come cheap. But he, Dik, Howard, Wesley, Sura & James all are who could possibly be gone. It just depends on the deal. I think JVG's comments about being bold basically means that yeah, now is the time to find a guy T-Mac and Yao will win a ring with and we need even more help than that. The chemistry on this team needs to exude more from T-Mac and Yao at some point anyway, and all these guys hopefully taught both our stars some valuable lessons.
I would just like to point out that the Lakers had horrid chemistry last year and made it to the Finals. And that's a tad farther than we made it this year. Upgrade our talent a tad, and we will be fine. It's not like we will have 4 super-egos here. J
getting darius miles as our backup 4 fits all the discriptions. he is around the same age as yao and tmac. he would upgrade our talent level. this would be a bold move chemistry wise and cap wise. portland wants to move him for cap space...we can offer spoon, or wesley/sura and baker. if we do trade one of our guards this can be damaging to our chemistry so it fits with JVG's cryptic message. miles is a great defender, decent rebounder and a good shotblocker. he doesn't have much range for a 3 but if moved to the 4 he could hit the FT line J that howard hit this year. miles could become our answer to the marion's and odom's of the nba. think about this bench! deke, miles, draft pick, JB, james.
I'm not sold on Miles, especially playing him at the 4. Miles is a good defender and is explosive, but he is stil rail thin and wouldn't be able to defend most PFs in the league. Bringing him off the bench would be nice, but he would be a pretty expensive backup. Also, I hate players w/ attitude problems, especially ones that are young and aren't even that good. What Miles did in Portland was really terrible.
Folks, We don't need stars at every position. We are probably fine right now at the PG and even SG position. We are glaringly week at SF and PF. If we can get a useful rookie in the draft, and just play him into the rotation, we can go after a veteran FA or make a trade, one that would hopefully reduce the roster and salary gluts at PG. I would love (as my moniker suggests) to have a traditional playmaking point guard, but in recent years the big scorers like TMac, Kobe, Iverson and the lot have gotten in done without a "real PG". There's just no need to f-up the team so I can have my druthers. If the outlook on Juwan and Bobby is good, Plan "A" is a no-brainer. -P1st, S2nd
I live in Portland. Portland wants to move Miles because he's a nightmare: some days he plays hard, but most he just flat out quit. The guy could take over games. But after his big contract he would play hard enough to stroke his own ego, and then noto play to first get Cheeks fired (as he said, but I can't get you the quote) and then he showed little improvement or any real consistent effort afterwards. He's a nightmare, a sinkhole of ill will, bad attitude, and chemistry problems.
Bold? Bold would be going after Steve Francis and bringing him back. Then turning around and trying to get Cuttino and Cato as well. That's bold.
I dont think going after Mobley with a S&T would be a half bad idea. We need a quick 2 guard with good defense, a solid mid-range and 3 point jumper, a quick first step, and able to create his own shot. I think Mobley completely fits the bill. We just have to hope that JVG doesnt have ego issues of signing people that he traded away.
